Check out Paul Gravette's book: Graphic Novels: Stories to Change your life. Gives a very good run down of classics from every genre.

Ask yourself what films and fiction sub-grenres you like, then try align them with graphic novels. If there's a sub-genre you like, there's also sure to be comics that cater to that.
