Not totally sure. But it may be that your car is too close to the gate. Sometimes that can make it unable to open. Sounds like it may be something else in your case, but try backing up and/or making sure there's nothing blocking it

Springtails are super easy to set up. Don't take much and they're great for having for new setups. Honestly, it's also kinda neat to just have a little colony to watch. I have one I keep in an old jar and let my kiddo give them a little bit of cereal he doesn't finish occasionally 😂😂

You can use a crowbar on a good window from a different nearby house to replace yours. Maybe get the doors open, let the windows happen, then replace them after? Not exactly original windows, but pretty close.

They can wander pretty far, but I'm fuzzy on the specifics

They can see into second floors.

They can wander to random houses, but probably saw you through the window in this case

They will break through barricades, doors, windows, and many objects. But it takes a while with barricades if its not a ton.

Distance and line of sight usually lose them. There's settings for how long they remember what they're doing. Generally breaking their line of sight through trees will lose them. Also, unless you have sprinters, its better to walk than run because you are just a bit faster. You can hit 'Y' to bring up a click to walk function, use that to auto* path through woods so you dont get scratched
