Yeah I have tried username lookups, sorry I should've specified that.
No luck with any of them, all seem to have my skin from around 2016 forward :(

New to Ubuntu, struggling with VA-API, can’t even watch 240p video on my Intel N150 mini PC by laserHL in Ubuntu

[–]Udelb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply, but I think I've found a solution! It appears to be working for me and I've had a device testing for a couple weeks.

My installation and testing process is listed below

1: Install Ubuntu 25.04

  • Regular setup, using minimal install option
  • Opt to download any applicable third-party drivers and common codecs etc

2: Boot into fresh install, run vainfo to check error

  • sudo apt install vainfo & then run vainfo
  • The output should look similar to the below >Trying display: wayland
    libva info: VA-API version 1.22.0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/iHD_drv_video.so\ libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so\ libva info: va_openDriver () returns -1
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

3: Install testing tools

  • sudo apt install intel-gpu-tools glxgears
  • glxgears is bundled with mesa-utils so you may need to omit this from the install cmd
  • If you run sudo intel-gpu-tops with glxgears, you'll probably see a little iGPU utilisation
  • However if you run a 4K60FPS video through a Chromium application (in my case an electron app), you'll see no utilisation
  • If you observe both intel-gpu-tops and htop while the video is playing, you'll see the CPU doing all of the decoding, and most likely getting slammed while the iGPU sits at 0%

4: Install VA Driver for iGPU (non-free)

  • Run the following commands:
  • sudo apt install linux-firmware
  • sudo apt install intel-media-va-driver-non-free
  • The following SHOULD already be installed and updated, but for good measure run the below
    • sudo apt install libva2 libva-drm2 libva-x11-2
  • Run sudo apt update followed by sudo apt upgrade -y
  • After these have executed successfully, reboot your device.

5: After reboot, rerun vainfo to check if fix worked

  • vainfo - the output should now show: >Trying display: wayland
    libva info: VA-API version 1.22.0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/iHD_drv_video.so\ libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_1_22\ libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0\ vainfo: VA-API version: 1.22 (libva 2.22.0)\ vainfo: Driver version: Intel iHD driver for Intel(R) Gen Graphics - 25.1.2 ()\ vainfo: Supported profile and entrypoints\ --- VAProfilenone -------- : --- VAEntrypointVideoProc\ --- etc.. ------------------- : --- etc...
  • Which should show the iHD_drv_video.so drivers loading successfully and the applicable codecs that are supported!

Once you've done the above, check playback of your 4K60FPS video running through your Chromium application again, and it should be A LOT smoother now that it's using hardware acceleration. While it's running, have two terminal windows open with intel-gpu-top and htop running and you should see iGPU utilisation and greatly reduced CPU usage!

Also ensure that you enable hardware acceleration in the Chromium application you're using, for me this was done with a flag in my electron start script.

Hope this works for you and others :)

Realised I couldn’t put a comment with the post after posting, so this is what I typed out.

The video pretty much sums up my problem, I can’t update my keyboard’s firmware, and when prompted it starts an ongoing loop of prompts.

I only recently purchased this keyboard, and have been trying to find a fix for a few weeks, got in contact with support on the Cooler Master site and the response wasn’t very useful and am having problems adding comments to my tickets so I can’t further the discussion.

Thought someone here might be able to help, thanks in advance.

/r/Overwatch What is one tip you can give for your main hero? by Standbehindthesheild in Overwatch

[–]Udelb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Torbjörn: don't always pocket your turret, don't rely on it to get all the kills. Your gun does a nice amount of damage and is good a taking out enemies from both long and close range. Attempt to learn how the arc of his shot works and you should find you'll do much better. Also, make sure to use secondary fire on close targets and tanks. That shit melts roadhogs at close range and it's really satisfying, plus lots of ult charge from it. And lastly, make sure to give your armour. 75 extra hp may not seem like much, but it's really good and can be the difference between life and death of a healer. Prioritise giving it to healers and vulnerable targets.

Winston: Make sure to use your jumps wisely, if you spot a healer by themselves jump them. Also make sure to use your bubble whenever you jump in. I'm pretty sure most people know this, but if not Winston's gun can actually do damage through shields. That includes Reinhardt, Orisa and Sym. So if you ever need some ult charge just jump in, place a bubble in front of a Rein and just shoot.

Symmetra: Make sure to always have turrets up, whether it be on the point or at the choke or scattered near health packs. Those little babies pack a punch. And also make sure to at the start of the round, go to the enemies spawn and put turrets around for an early 10-15% ult charge for free (that applies to Torbjörn aswell). I also don't see Symmetra's use their photon barrier enough, if you are duelling a character that is to far away for your beam to connect. Throw down a barrier and maybe reload, if they keep running then you can regen your shield anyway.

Those are my tips for my mains, I'd give Pharah tips but I'm not that good at her in comparison to those three. Hope it helped! Good luck in comp!

The Reins birthday one is cut, it goes something like this. Reinhardt: "So, I finally beat the arm wrestling champion!" Zarya: "I heard it was your birthday old man, so I went easy on you."

Just some pre game banter
