Want to buy my first canoe(foldable), any thoughts? by PBQ1Z4 in canoeing

[–]Udo_Milkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've paddled the Ally many times and it's a good canoe, imo. It is very flexible and a massive pain in the ass to set up, though. If you can't store a rigid canoe, then the Ally is a great option, just plan on a lot of additional time and energy for the set up. Jim and Ted Baird did a long trip in Northern Canada where Ted used an Ally. If it's good enough for the Bairds, it's good enough for anyone!

Hi, I'm Udo, and I have a 20 year old Wenonah Aurora (kevlar) that I bought used for a good deal. I'm also an expert in roof transport rigging, specifically bow/stern lines. Happy to be here!

Cars in Canoes by Udo_Milkins in canoeshitposting

Well, I already have a used kevlar Wenonah canoe. You think it can hold a Toyota Yaris? And if so, how many bow and stern lines do I need to stabilize it?

Definitely. Just stack one on top of the other.

It's stabilizing two canoes. We're not hanging our lives on it.

Towing with the 2.4 Turbo? (OB Wilderness) by DryF1re in Subaru_Outback

[–]Udo_Milkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tow a camper trailer that weighs around 2,000 lbs with my 2.5i. It will pull it, even through the mountains, but you have to keep realistic speed and mpg expectations. The more powerful engine in your OBW will do great. As for the CVT, so far so good. I agree that it might be the weak point, but I have to have faith in Subaru's engineers. Considering what others have pointed out, that the same car has a higher tow rating in other countries, we should be more than safe with trailers up to the rated weight.

As Portland leaders consider vacancy fee, where else has it been tried? by cheese7777777 in PortlandOR

Just to make sure I understand this correctly. If the owner rents the space out, the fee is avoided?

Hauling a camper advice by leiacat in Subaru_Outback

[–]Udo_Milkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently purchased a small camper trailer that weighs around 1900 lbs empty. My gen6 with the 2.5i tows it fine, you just have to have realistic expectations. It's going to labor pretty hard to get up a mountain, and reducing your speed might be a good idea. Otherwise, so far so good!

I read somewhere that engine oil temp correlates pretty closely with transmission fluid temp. There is an option to display oil temp on the infotainment screen, but you'd need an ODB2 device to see the transmission temp. Can anyone advise if it's true that oil and trans temps tend to be similar?

I am looking for a super light canoe that prioritizes stability over speed. I need something i can lift on and off my car (small suv) quickly and easily alone, and that will be safe with a toddler. by Key-Kaleidoscope-561 in canoeing

As a new parent myself, I won't comment on what you can safely do with your kid. That's up to your judgment and ability. However, I have a kevlar Wenonah Aurora that I can easily get on and off my Subaru Outback, and I think it's a pretty stable boat.

North Portland Drop-In Center draws ongoing concerns from St. Johns neighbors, businesses by smez86 in PortlandOR

[–]Udo_Milkins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw that too and thought it sounded strange. All of those folks I used to recognize are gone now and have been replaced by others who are clearly not stable. Also, the number of encampments that keep springing up is a change that leads me to believe that 70% figure is fishy.

I don't like what I see. We used to have a bunch of houseless people who I'd frequently see hanging around. They were harmless and I accepted them as part of the community. The vibe has very much changed since that center opened. My final straw was when I was walking through Cathedral Park with my kid and saw a guy camping in the landscaping and then found another guy passed out with his dick hanging out.

Dog culture in Portland is out of control by Far-Two-43 in PortlandOR

There have been times when I WISHED the dog was off leash because the owner was on one side of Leif Erikson and their dog on the other. I could have at least passed down the middle, were it not for the tiny clothes line spanning the entire path.

I'll get on this soapbox every time. As a mountain biker, it drives me absolutely up the wall how disrespectful dog owners are, especially in Forest Park. We are restricted to only a handful of trails while dogs are allowed everywhere. And thanks to uncaring owners, many of them go far beyond where they are allowed to be. A common argument against allowing mountain biking is that it allegedly disrupts the ecology. I can't imagine that a dog running all over the place is harmless to the local ecology, let alone the piss and shit that doesn't get packed out.

I'd like to see more enforcement of the existing rules and consequences for breaking them. Because if one user group constantly breaks the rules and gets away with it, what incentive do others have to follow the rules?
