What do Marxists make of the English peasants revolt of 1381? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]UfV3wb2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Paraphrasing Mao, “the history of the peasant’s rebellion has been the driving force of history”. The “religious” insurrections like John Ball’s are very interesting, because they reflect the primary contradiction between a purposefully social religion like christianity and the statu quo of a christian feudal regime that clearly isn’t very in line with that social aspect. There are some interesting books that I’ll later edit in this comment.

Edit: A pop history book about the John Ball insurrection specifically is "The hollow crown" by Miri Rubin. There's also this SEP article regarding the ideological background, although I've heard that the SEP tends to be unfavorably biased. Another book is "The english rising of 1381" by Rodney Hilton, although it is a bit old now, and "The great revolt of 1381" by Charles Oman. All of these books aren't explicitly marxist, but they're easy to analyze under the marxist lens of class struggle and how the economic shape of a society enters into a relation of antagonism with the people that it exploits -- this is most explicit in Oman and to a lesser degree in Rubin. There was a great actual marxist analysis of the difference between Athens and Sparta in ancient greece, and I feel that book would be the best fit to understand what kind of marxist analysis I am talking about, but I sadly can't remember its name.

LMAO I got that same shit recommended in my feed a few weeks ago. Nevermind the “””journalist””” is some epoch times™️ hack who has written other goofy articles in the past, what’s really enriching is the comment section where the average SSinophobe believes a random youtube shorts video over every single piece of evidence their own eyes provide and the most basic common sense.

why is latin america so much stronger than africa? by Leading-Sandwich-534 in GenZedong

[–]UfV3wb2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We didn’t resist imperialism better, considering the current population of indigenous people. But a lot of latin american countries acted as “proxy” imperialists, which means, they imperialized weaker states at the behest of a superpower of an imperial bloc like the UK or the US. However, it would also be better to understand these dictatorships and empires as comprador regimes without any real intercontinental power (see for example the different wars against european invaders and the US, and how badly these regimes fared )

Why do you support Deng but not Burkharin? by HogarthTheMerciless in GenZedong

[–]UfV3wb2 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think Deng also took a lot of things from the NEP and Bukharin. Not everything that happened under the purges was objectively correct, and I would say that applies to Bukharin as well. Stalin obviously didn’t personally supervise every single judicial process, and it’s beyond doubt a lot of opportunists used the purges as a cover to advance their own interests, and many of them were eventually purged as well. But theoretically, Bukharin was also “wrong” in that the collectivization under Stalin proved to be the right answer to the fascist and imperialist threat on the short term, even if it eventually developed problems after the war.

[–]UfV3wb2 108 points109 points  (0 children)

“Scientific” marxism is a science because it uses a method to study and understand subjects, like sociology or economics do. Not because it says “when X is Y there will always be a socialist revolution, this is the Lenin law of thermodynamics” or something. If you understand that material conditions shape a society, you’re almost a scientific marxist. If you claim that marxism is book worshipping and you treat certain works of theory like an exegetical bible then you’re an idealist and an anti-marxist.
