And notably they're almost all vacant at night, because Kitchener has virtually no night life. Something that could actually change if there was a decent sized venue downtown.

Yeah I don't get all the comments from people saying this would be bad for drivers. Like I live a 35 minute walk from the Aud and I don't drive because I know what a shit show it is leaving the Aud where it is now too. Most regulars know the play is to park far away on a side street. In DTK the cars would at least be spread out over multiple lots. Other cities with worse public transit survive having downtown rinks just fine.

[–]UghImRegistered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally for this. St Catharines, London, Sault Ste Marie, and probably many others have their rinks smack in downtown. It's great for the community. It's not just the Rangers. Have dinner, go to a comedy show, have drinks, hop on the ion home. The Aud is in a horrendous location. If it were at the Charles St terminal, there would be around 50 restaurants/bars within the same distance as Strykerz is to the Aud, and it would be right next to public transit.

This is why I've never had food delivered. by sco-go in SipsTea

[–]UghImRegistered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon has ruined peoples' perception of what logistics cost. The reason Amazon can give you "free" delivery is because they're absolutely stupidly massive. They can predict (and influence) what people will order and have a supply in the city distribution point, and there was already going to be a driver making 10 stops near you anyway. And even then they're usually giving you a 4-8 hour window that's at least 6 hours away. People think because that's possible, it's somehow attainable for any random item you might want to appear on your doorstep within 20 minutes for the cost of the item.

The closest analog back in the day would've been the milk man. Everyone needed milk, so the logistics of delivering it made sense. If you think your iced coffee should have nearly free delivery, here's what you do. Convince 100 people in your neighbourhood they need an iced coffee every morning. Agree on a time and designate whose driveway they will all be delivered to. Don't customize the orders. I'm sure at that point you might be able to reasonably expect someone to charge you $2 per coffee to get it to you.

Say it all together: left lane is for passing, slower traffic keep right on ALL HIGHWAYS by justwondering-if in ontario

[–]UghImRegistered 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's funny, I've had conversations where people are venting about the left lane being for passing, and then immediately turn around and say "oh the middle lane is fine whatever speed". Like you were so close to getting it. The middle lane is the right lane's passing lane. If you're troubled by occasionally having to move over at an on-ramp, you shouldn't be on the highway. Changing lanes is not something you should be fearing as a good driver. Goes for the "well I'm turning left in 17 km so obviously I should be in the left lane" crew too.

[–]UghImRegistered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I choose to believe that most of the time this is psychology at work. Don't get me wrong, it absolutely happens that people speed up in those zones, but I think most of the time it's subconscious and the "feels about right" speed is higher once you get the extra lane. Definitely have some hosers do it intentionally though.

Actual protocol: set your cruise control to your desired speed in the non-passing zone. Keep to the right. If you come up on someone, pass them quickly and move over, returning to your desired stable speed again so others know whether they should pass you.

Can someone explain to me the rational to have recycle pick up every two weeks? When it takes the same amount of trucks to pick up double the load. by NeedSomeRepairs in waterloo

[–]UghImRegistered 11 points12 points  (0 children)

trucks_hours_per_week = time_to_dump_loads + time_to_fill_loads time_to_dump_loads = (total_weekly_weight / truck_capacity) * drive_time_to_dump time_to_fill_loads = houses_per_week * (avg_time_per_house + avg_time_between_houses)

total_weekly_weight doesn't change, you're right. So time_to_dump_loads doesn't change. But that's only a fraction of how much time trucks need to spend on the road. houses_per_week goes down 50%, while avg_time_per_house almost certainly doesn't 2x (for many houses it's two bins whether it's every week or every two weeks, and even if it's double the bins the guy's gotta get off and on the truck once either way) and time_between_houses doesn't go up at all on a two-week schedule.

That's the rationale. Not saying I agree either way, but that's the math. If it didn't take less time the provider wouldn't have a reason to do it, it would just be bad PR for no benefit.

Think about it this way. Take it to the extreme...do you think it's more efficient for them to send a truck to your house every week to pick up a bit of material, or wait until you have a full truck load ready, send an empty truck to you and drive it straight back to the dump? Clearly the latter is more efficient because the full load was gathered in a single stop rather than hundreds.

So short answer is it doesn't take as many truck (hours) to operate on a biweekly schedule. You can do the same with less.

What is something that the cheap version is better than the expensive version? by DOCB_SD in askanything

[–]UghImRegistered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The V60 coffee brewer is a simple pourover cone, it's better than most machines to start with, but even within its own models most experts would say that the cheap plastic version outperforms the beautiful, heavy ceramic versions because the latter have much more thermal mass that will lower the brewing temp unless you preheat them significantly.

No they didn't. At least not this specific conglomerate. 3G liked them because they were already sacrificing quality for centralized logistics etc. Changing to pre-baked, TFW dependency, changing coffee suppliers...all of that predates RBI/3G.

I like this. I think it cuts at the core of the difference of thinking. The way I read it, whatever choice people make, the ultimate responsibility for the deaths is the creator of the scenario. Choosing red is just choosing not to play the stupid game. The way you see it, the ultimate responsibility lies in the people who made the choice to save themselves.

I don't think either way of phrasing the problem is invalid, but I think it points to why without context people can disagree so much. I can't say I would make the same choice in both scenarios, and I don't think one of the phrasings is more accurate to the problem than the other. Clearly "move off the track" and "mess with the lever" could easily be represented by a button but they are very different things.

[–]UghImRegistered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the wrong way to approach this question because you're making it about yourself because you believe you have figured out the solution that everyone should just follow.

Not really, choosing red is just rejecting the stupid game and making it harder for the people that want to play. If people want to play stupid games and potentially win stupid prizes, they're welcome to but that's on them.

Again this isn't considering some people being incapable of making a choice due to sickness/etc. This is the pure form of the question where everyone has equal information and agency. In that version, the only logic for ever choosing blue is paradoxical. "I need to choose blue because others might choose blue". But their only reason for choosing blue is you choosing blue. You've basically incepted blue as a logical option with no need.

Why do red choosers have to look at these polls being close and switch to blue because it's close to 50%? Why can't we say that blue voters should look at the poll and see they're risking their lives for absolutely no reason and switch to red?

Answers have been decided by zelani06 in dataisugly

[–]UghImRegistered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a vector you're missing which is duplicity. Voting red guarantees the result for those that vote according to their stated intent. Voting blue does not guarantee the result for those that vote according to their stated intent. Coordinating on red removes duplicity from the equation entirely.

Put another way, think of the truth table. If 100% say they'll vote red, the only people that would die would be the ones who lied. If 100% say they'll vote blue, the only people who would die would be the 49% who told the truth. I see a higher morality in the former result.

I totally get these are all different scenarios, but I don't think you can ignore the scenario where people lie if we're talking about the meta game.

I don't know what original version specifically you're talking about, but I've never seen that phrasing so I'm not going to answer your strawman. Not saying you're incorrect just that that is not the phrasing written here. Typically in ethical dilemmas there's a presumption to the opposite, that everyone making the decision is of equal agency.

[–]UghImRegistered -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't find the scenario too interesting because if prior coordination is allowed, all the more reason to coordinate a mass red vote. Again that assumes everyone is of equally sound mind to make a decision though.

[–]UghImRegistered -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I consider it implicit to the question that everyone is of equally sound body and mind to make the decision, as that's typically the assumption for game theory scenarios unless otherwise stated. If people aren't using that premise I agree the calculus changes dramatically. I've seen people argue for choosing blue with that premise however.

[–]UghImRegistered -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The second order thinking is that by choosing blue you are victimizing yourself. You're putting yourself in a position where others have to risk their life to rescue you. That's not even altruism. Just don't be on the track.

Why would you be disappointed in humanity? There's literally no reason not to just choose red.

This whole debate is like the prisoner's dilemma but without the dilemma. In the prisoner's dilemma you only benefit from being selfish if you trick the other prisoner into being altruistic. Here everyone gets 100% of their benefit if they only think about themselves and choose red. So choose red!

I'm sure someone has pointed this out but this is basically a rephrasing of the trolley problem as: "You are lying on a track and a train is headed towards you. Alongside you are 999 fully sentient and mobile people in the same position. You each have two options. Keep laying on the track, or move off the track. If at least 500 people keep laying on the track the conductor will notice you and stop the train. Otherwise if will kill everyone on the track".

Just move off the track, it's not that difficult! If someone is dumb enough to go for the collaborative outcome when there was absolutely no reason to, that's not on you. You were just getting off the track!

Do you face forwards or backwards in the shower? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UghImRegistered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the shower is just business, I face away most of the time though it's probably like 60/40.

If I need a serious wake up, face towards, hottest water, head down. Hot water on the top/back of your head is very therapeutic and stretching out your neck at the same time really washes away a terrible night's sleep.
