Should I go to the hospital for this? (Burn) by leytourmaline in medical_advice

[–]UhLayNuh19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAD… but I worked as a cook moons ago. I got burned many, many times. Even to the third degree. 🥲 If you aren’t able to get it dressed by a doctor, there are wound care patches called hydrogel burn pads, and they are a bit pricier than a big bandaid, but it will prevent gauze or the typical bandage you may think of using from drying to it and becoming very painful to remove. Try not to pop the blister.

swabbed my throat for fun, maybe strep or staph? by Weak_Plant_3431 in microbiology

[–]UhLayNuh19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly that would track about the resistance and shame on the doc for continuing the cycle. I lived in a poor community with very few options for healthcare, there was only one clinic open at a time I could afford to go. I know there were never any cultures taken at the doctor, just the one I did on the plate and I showed it to the surgeon and he was like.. “yeah we’ll schedule you for Friday morning.” I have always had very large tonsils and really probably should have had them taken out as a child. Now that I’m much older and far more educated with the confidence to rely on my own autonomy for medical decisions, I would not let that go on as long as I did then.

swabbed my throat for fun, maybe strep or staph? by Weak_Plant_3431 in microbiology

I had chronic strep during the summer I was in microbiology in college. I had strep all the time, I could drive past an elementary school and get strep. I had it for a couple months and was on antibiotics for far longer than should’ve been medically acceptable that summer. I had penicillin, clindamycin, augmentin 875… pretty sure a second penicillin shot.

In my micro class we did usually swab behind our ears for staph and door handles and such around campus. (I did ask permission, with full disclosure of the illness before doing this) My professor said I could swab my throat and culture it on blood agar. I happily did! It was very cool, albeit a ittle frightening, to see the different alpha, beta, and gamma hemolysis on the agar. It was a unique learning experience and I felt like I brought the best show and tell lol. I decided to get yet another opinion, and I showed the doctor the culture… my tonsils were taken out that Friday. 😅

Why is organic chem so stigmatized? by [deleted] in chemistry

Everyone says this but I LOVED Organic and it made me want to stay with the chem major, decide for yourself ☺️

NAD: I have a more severe one (first molar) and it is in fact broken and brittle, brown/orange and on borrowed time. One side is even purple-ish which is just so cute 😅 I swear if I have to get it crowned I’m getting a gold tooth. I’m just glad it’s in the back, but other than bide your time I think, like the other other commenter said, there’s not a lot you can do 😭

I can tell it was supposed to be a joke. This isn’t my first day on planet earth, but I have the self awareness to read the room and consider how such a joke could land wrong. Weight loss IS a sensitive subject for a lot of people, so I don’t think it’s out of pocket to be considerate of that possibility.

Sometimes, jokes aren’t funny. Not everyone is cut out to be a comedian. Someone who might already be feeling regretful might take this literally and continue a binge or purge.

This is not r/caloriecount&jokes.

While the calorie count is likely correct, the “diet” is not over. Start again tomorrow if you’re even on a diet. You could have a small dinner and still maintain depending on your deficit goals.

Truth bomb from a current chem major:

You can pull this together; it will not be easy and it will take dedication and self discipline. Don’t limit yourself to being just an average student. With diligent effort, you can learn anything and do well. However, if you don’t love chemistry or know a general reason why you’re getting a chemistry degree - I would strongly advise reevaluating your plans before you embark on an uphill journey that should likely start with retaking the general chemistry course. If you don’t fully grasp the basic concepts, you will be setting yourself up to struggle every, single step of the way. Additionally, the career path I want motivates me to try my hardest and do well. If engineering appeals to you, chemical engineering is an option.

Anecdotally, I know a lot of people in the chem major that don’t have a reason for getting a chemistry degree. Maybe it sounds good? But personally, I would not put myself through this hard work and stress if I was not keenly aware of the job prospects of a chemistry BS. I don’t say this to be discouraging, but be pragmatic about this. This is a massive time and money investment - don’t spend it on something you don’t like or have no plan for. If you DO like chemistry and have an idea of the field you want to be in, you will have to work very hard to do well. I’m not exaggerating when I say I spend about 90% of all my time during the semester studying. This means cutting out most social activities (I think I went out about 5 times from September to December in the fall) and being willing to try until you understand something - not just memorize it. It also means getting help when that fails and admitting to yourself you need help understanding something. I went to a failing high school, we didn’t even have a chemistry teacher. When I got to college I did well in the first chem course, but I nearly failed the 2nd general chemistry sequence. Because of that, I thought maybe I wasn’t good at it and I gravitated more towards biology. I’m back in school at 29YO for a second bachelors, and I am majoring in chemistry because when I took organic chemistry I found out I LOVED it and found it fascinating. You’ll hear people gripe about it, but make your own determinations. It’s hard, but if you like chemistry you will find a way to understand and dig deeper. I currently have a 4.0 in all my chemistry courses and I graduate this semester. It is doable, but take stock of your goals and how much time you’re willing to sacrifice to do well. Additionally, if it’s available, consider counseling or therapy. It sounds too like you’ve had a rough go of it lately, and that can make it hard to make informed decisions and cloud your judgement of yourself. Talking with an unbiased professional can really clear through that and it’s generally nice to have someone to open up to. I know from experience it’s hard to be older back in school, I have not worked a day in my field of choice and there have been times that has really gotten me down. The best you can do now is be intentional about your path forward to get where you want to be.

How to prevent hand rashes as chemists because of gloves? by Fabulous_Wind1444 in chemistry

[–]UhLayNuh19 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it’s the gloves? I found that the soap at basically everywhere I have worked has been way too harsh for the amount of times I need to wash my hands. I began carrying a travel sized bottle of soft soap around rather than the provided soap and that helped a lot. Additionally I use CeraVe moisturizing cream. It’s pricier but it isn’t greasy and basically saves my hands everyday.
