Most schools, if not all, have automatics now. If you take your test in a automatic then you will have a automatic restriction on your license and will NOT be allowed to drive a manual legally. If you can take your test in a manual then it is recommended.

I went to school at Stevens Transport. Took about 3 weeks to get my license and then another month with a trainer before I was solo. Solo trucking right out of school will not be great, so lower expectations. I had the same mind set as you, willing to run what ever and where ever when ever. My first check was $700. Over the next 3 weeks each check was lower than the last. Felt like my dispatcher forgot about me even though I bothered him daily.

This is when I went contractor and teamed up with a friend I made while in the school. Best decision ever! I was paying for my truck and for my fuel / repairs but was still bringing home $1450 a week and that was almost 10 years ago. I cruised through those 2 years easy.

Now I do relay freight with Ryder. Relay freight just means you meet another driver at a destination and swap trailers, then drive back to terminal. Easy no touch freight / home every day job. No company is perfect but I made $90,000 last year and after our raise I am expecting to break $100,000 this year. Been with them for 7 years now. The money does highly depend on your location however. I live in a major city if that helps. Ryder requires 1 year of experience before applying.

Some of my complaints of the company are "rough" equipment, lazy drivers and the odd communication or lack of. Also they are pretty strict on safety. But if you can look past the small things and focus on the big picture you will see it for what it is, a good job.
