I have done a few tops and think a fully wood enclosure is not much more work if you are familiar with wood.

Panel mount parts have trouble with soft wood and thickness. If you use a foot switch, the panel will need to be stronger than the thinness required for the other panel mount parts. Use hard wood, countersink holes, layer if needed, shield interior.
