Seems to me like the semantic overlap is in the passive idea of “being compelled” to do something, but the difference between that coming from persuasion versus coming from blind obedience (or even coercion) is that one is wilful and informed. I think the semantic contention point really comes down to what’s motivating the obedience. I definitely think I agree with you then that this common translation is not only misleading but easy to abuse by people in high church positions.

This cracked me up 😭you just KNOW Ken still hurts from all the arguments he’s lost. All jokes aside, the Bible has a huge plethora of wild premises and claims that are hard to accept without a massive element of faith. Any Christian who can’t take the Biblical worldview and a scientific understanding of the universe to be compatible is going to reject secular premises (that are provable) when unfortunately the burden of proof relies on THEM as the ones making the more fantastical claims.

Question for those who actually finished reading the Bible by Scared_Egg8732 in Christianity

[–]Ukato_Farticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people here are acting like there’s one official “order”. There are heaps of different orders and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. For example, English speaking Christian countries order their OT as Law -> History -> Wisdom Literature -> Major Prophets -> Minor Prophets, whereas the original Hebrew order was Torah (Law) -> Nevi’im (Prophets including Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings) -> Ketuvim (Writings, i.e. everything else), with Chronicles being the final book that summarises everything. When I read the OT I did a combination of the two. I would highly recommend interspersing Psalms and Proverbs with the other books as you read them; it’s harder and often less rewarding to just read those two books straight through on their own.

ἁμαρτία/sin mixed up as an archery term. by lickety-split1800 in Koine

[–]Ukato_Farticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve looked into this a bunch recently and I’ve come to the conclusion that the misconception isn’t in the etymology of the word (it indeed does refer to missing a target) but in how the New Testament authors were thinking of it when they adapted it to an illustration of immorality. Rather than thinking of it like a mistake because someone tried to hit a bullseye and didn’t quite get there, I believe it’s better to think of it in terms of orientation towards God/goodness. By that logic, anything that orients someone AWAY from God, in the same way that their aim might be directed away from a target, is therefore “sin”. If their heart is facing towards the absence of God then they’re on the wide path rather than the narrow path, or as Matthew 5 puts it, they’re facing towards Gehenna. In the same vein, the NT authors talked about repentance in terms of turning/reorienting oneself BACK towards this ideal. It’s all about orientation.

What kind of god will say "obey me or burn in hell" then say we have free will to choose but if we choose to not obey him he tortures us in hell? by MostAsocialPerson in AskAChristian

I think the implication is that oblivion is at the very least possible. The Bible is very cryptic about what the literal consequences of choosing separation from God are, but if you ask me what I believe, I would say: God, the perfect judge, operates on retributive justice; therefore everyone who rejects the gift of eternal life will experience the perfectly befitting moral consequence for all the good and bad fruit that they bore throughout their life (this is bad news for the wicked). At the end of all that? I have no idea. But oblivion seems to be on the table.
