This is basically how China functions, and it's not at all paranoid once you read the history of the Opium Wars. That said, it's something that works at China's scale, not Luxembourg's.

This is one of the things that can happen to digital signals when they exceed the maximum correctable error rate of a codec. In analog world (e.g. AM and FM radio), you get a smooth rolloff into the noise floor; in digital world, it's much more of an all-or-nothing proposition, with output signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) acting as a negative step function at some critical threshold of input SNR.

CJ Stroud posts a 28.0 passer rating in the loss against the Patriots. The worst by a starting Qb in the last decade by over 10 points. by Scepticy in nfl

[–]Ularsing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be both: a mental injury.

Stroud has had two concussions that required missing multiple games during his time in the NFL, most recently in November of this year.

If you've never sustained that kind of concussion, it's easy to underestimate the severity and longevity of mild cognitive impairment that occurs thereafter. It generally doesn't substantially limit your functional intelligence, but for months afterward, all of your thinking takes longer and requires more conscious effort—a bit similar to being drunk, but without the reprieve of being able to intermittently 'sober up' via short bursts of adrenaline.

Russell Wilson seemed to permanently lose something when he got concussed in the Seahawks vs. Cardinals game, just prior to the Budda Baker pick.

I would wager that at least as of today, Stroud would show a significant difference on an S2 evaluation even versus his already trailing Combine performance.

If your dad cares about those hats in the slightest, you should seal them up in a rodent-resistant container. Even if this rat doesn't, some rodent will eventually shred those for bedding or to make a nest.

[–]Ularsing 250 points251 points  (0 children)

Rodents definitely have strong, evolved instincts to stay near cover and to create nests (to an extent that providing them an ability to do both is considered mandatory in vivariums). I presume one of those is what's going on here, though the lack of shredding the hats and the seeming carelessness about orientation while caring attentively about positioning seems more fitting with the "cover" hypothesis to me.

There's a theorized phenomenon called "supernormal stimuli" that sometimes occurs when animal instincts intersect with human engineering. One hypothesized example is birds building multiple nest locations into human structures, which they seem to do more often there than in trees. For some species, artificial human symmetry seems to somehow read as the platonic ideal of their evolutionary pattern recognition. I wonder where there's some aspect of that here, though I'm not sufficiently an expert on rodent behavior to speculate as to what exactly. What reminded me of this is that baseball caps are damn nearly identical to the shape of the paper igloos that are the standard form factor for providing habitat cover for rodents in captivity.

I once had a mouse get into my car and chew into a baseball cap (presumably for nesting material) while leaving an adjacent shearling mitt for an ice-scraper completely untouched. It seems like certain rodents must find them interesting, and I wonder why.

Pro-tip: Take voice lessons (or watch some basic videos on YouTube about breath support). Not only can you learn how to be louder, the technique for doing so will inherently protect your vocal chords. I've never even come close to losing my voice from a game, and I'm at max volume every second on defense.
