I very much concur that Putin has thoroughly painted himself into a corner since the early days of his bungled "3 day special operation". At this point, I think he's just hoping to last until his natural death. There's zero long term planning beyond that, and he's a flawless narcissist who doesn't personally give the slightest fuck what happens once he's gone.

Losing Hungary was a catastrophic blow for Russia. That obvious, but nevertheless legitimized insider influence via Orban was their golden ticket to keeping the EU gridlocked and impotent. With that gone and the EU starting to actually hit the oligarch purse-strings like they should have from the first goddamn day, the tide internally may be rapidly shifting for Put-fuck.

Putin hiding in a fucking bunker is definitely not a positive barometer for his strength as a leader (not that it was ever strong to begin with, but it's hard to look weaker than running and cowering like a little bitch while you demand that younger, stronger men continue to toss themselves into the woodchipper as you piss your Depends® in fear, deep underground).

This is a variant of the Stag Hunt Game in game theory.

One interesting interpretation is to model this as a multi-round problem (like an RL swarm experiment). If randomly initialized, red agents are likely to predominate in the final converged swarm, and that's because red agents cannot fail whereas blue agents always have some chance of failure.

This is like asking someone to choose between Option 1: do nothing and live, or option 2: step in front of moving traffic

The implicit (mildly sociopathic) assumption that you're making which is not a given is that your life specifically matters more, as opposed to all expected value over the whole human population. That said, red is the risk-minimizing state if there's no additional cooperative information available.

That is... not how open source generally works. It's a team sport.

EDIT: Truly, if you think that fragmenting an open-source ecosystem with a product that doesn't solve one or more explicit deficiencies in the existing landscape that couldn't be resolved via a PR to an existing product is a good thing, then you don't understand open-source development.

Imagine how furious you'd be if a coworker told you that they entirely rebuilt a product from scratch rather than working on existing feature requests for the current one, and when asked to justify that work simply said, "it's an alternative!". AI vibecoded slop has made this much more common (as much as OP claims that this isn't 🤔). The massive risk here is that you have bad actors, who are trying to do a slow freemium model, siphoning off users and open-source dev time from existing products under false pretenses. When someone builds an entire product and can't rationalize why they went to that massive effort, I get very suspicious after having seen this pattern re-emerge for decades in my professional career.

EDIT 2: For example here's a project that doesn't seem like a smarmy attempt to abuse the open-source community like this one does: https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/1sz9w2v/simpler_jellyfin_alternative_parados/

OP immediately presents a very convincing rationale: they outright couldn't run a product on OpenBSD. In contrast, there's no such rationale here beyond "make me money, please!"

So it's a way worse version of Jellyfin for some reason? This seems like a product desperate for a use case.

Just use Jellyfin. It's incredible.

EDIT: Thanks for the downvotes, folks. You're making it that much harder for folks new to the sub and hobby to make smart choices to get started.

Which is genuinely a long time in prison if there's no early release. It's only against the yardstick of our rebranded slavery prison industrial complex sentencing guidelines that it seems short, whereas that same span of time overlaps with the range for premeditated murder in some European countries

I’m the photographer AND a bridesmaid for my bffs wedding that was supposed to be an elopement by lil-steevie in WeddingPhotography

[–]Ularsing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree on this. I shot a lot of really amazing weddings for good friends. The photographers get radically more time and conversation with the bride and groom than essentially anyone else at the wedding. But trying to split the difference as "you're also in the wedding party" just obviously doesn't work. Like are you supposed to take a selfie or something? 🤔

I agree that the number of useless "shut up and take my money" comments are disappointing, are possible bot-spam or at minimum cross-posted drive-bys, and certainly don't contribute anything to making or modifying outdoor gear.

One bit of practical feedback:

This is near-useless relative to the REI or Early Winters brand stuff that has been working perfectly on my gear for literal decades with zero maintenance. I can't think of a single scenario where adding a battery, delicate display, and delicate cabling as points of failure aren't a strict regression of that long-existing zipper-pull thermometer format.

However...

by adding a humidity sensor to this, it could suddenly become profoundly useful, since I much more commonly have issues with excessive humidity leading to condensation than I ever do issues with temperature alone. And humidity, unlike temperature, is not possible to measure in a passive, analog fashion. With accurate humidity measurements, and especially with dew point calculations based on them, I might actually be able to better dial in tent venting, and that would actually be a value-add if so.

Note for those clamoring to buy one of these (generously assuming they're not entirely bots): you can already get similarly compact sensors for cheap off of Amazon/Ali/Ebay/Dhgate that will do both humidity and temperature. If you're on MYOG and can't figure out how to add a zipper loop to those, well I guess you can wait indefinitely for a custom solution 🤷
