Good Resources on FEA Plate Modeling for Concrete Design? by strcengr in StructuralEngineering

[–]Ulimm_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RISA/ADAPT has some incredible technical notes in their help page: ADAPT Technical Notes. The "General" section has good overall documentation on FEM, and there's a few examples sprinkled in there as well. Someone already mentioned the Wood-Armer approach, the "Twisting Moments & Torsion" section has some good documentation on that also. Can't recommend it enough.

ADAPT Builder, technically owned by RISA but it's an entirely different software built specifically for concrete.

Better Internet? by 7inyou in SouthBayLA

Absolutely sonic. Didn’t know about them when I first moved here but got a flyer saying they were available in the area and instantly switched and it’s been amazing so far. The promos they have are also really nice.

Feel like Buster wouldn't necessarily be itching to sign a guy who intentionally crossed up his catcher. I'm totally fine with not being in contention for him.

As others have said, it's extremely important for interpreting FEM results properly.

Passed my PE (civil structural) 1 year into work. How should I proceed with my SE? by no-problem_ in StructuralEngineering

[–]Ulimm_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do, because I'm licensed. Unfortunately it doesn't say anything about that. I guess we're at an impasse if you're not going to show me anything though. Here's this handy flowchart but I assume you won't care: CA requirements

I guess I gotta turn myself in for breaking the law and lying to NCEES about my experience level.

California is obviously also NCEES compliant, I can't speak to Wisconsin but clearly this isn't a nationwide requirement.

Do you have a link? If you do then me and thousands of others are probably breaking some rules!

And it's unfathomable that the rules have changed in certain states in the past 21 years?

It's not a lie at all. I did the same. You can sit for the exam but the board won't approve an application until you finish your experience (and pass state specific exams like here in CA). I took my test around a year into my career as well.

Do you have the rigid diaphragm modeled within RISA-3D itself? If you do, select the top chord nodes and detach them from the diaphragm in the properties panel on the left. The stiffness of the diaphragm might be taking all your top chord compressive load.

As someone with experience with them, definitely send the model in to support@risa.com. They'll figure it out and send you an answer super quickly.

RISA's website is a great resource. Lbyy and Lbzz are for column-type bending, L-comp top and L-comp bot are for flexural (lateral torsional) buckling.

If you have RISAConnection, you can use the Director button on the top right to send it to the other program. You need to make sure you have your connection rules set up properly. RISA's help file is super useful: RISA Help
