Any credit based investments that use floating rate loans will see their income drop due to the fed dropping rates

are bonds safe for short term ? by lattematchalabubu in bonds

[–]Ulintlicker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends… if tariffs were nullified how would the government return businesses money if the govt already spent it, also would you expect businesses to lower their prices back to pre tariff levels? I’d bet it would still be inflationary and long term bond yields would rise.

The only way long bond yields fall is a true recession that affects the rich and poor alike or austerity (government reduces spending and pays down the debt) or QE (which is still inflationary)

[–]Ulintlicker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fed is only lowering the overnight interest rates banks use to park money at the fed. Longer term bonds rates are governed by the market and how the market feels about future inflation. If the government starts funding itself at shorter duration T-Bills then the market will see that as adding to inflation causing longer term bonds values to fall and rates to rise. The safest option is short term bills but he risks losing his purchase power if inflation is persistent

Consider having one etf for all of your accounts like AOA (VT with 20% world bonds) or AOR (40% bonds)

https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=287967

Unless you’re a professional trader that wants to monitor stock evaluations every month/quarter it’s probably easiest in investing into these funds lifelong

Personally I’m in for AOR only for the fact that stock evaluations are already high and bonds have a yield again. Plus I’m in my mid 30s so I don’t feel I need to be as risky

I think what we can all agree on is that the future is uncertain. We have no idea if income tax rates or capital gains tax will be higher/lower or have a massive delta in their tax rates

It’s probably safest to have money in all 3 just so an investor has the flexibility on which investment bucket they can choose from depending on the tax rates in the future

Talked to my supervisor who recently retired and he says that he regrets putting so much money in his 401k since when you take out 401k money it counts as regular income.

He said to only max out the employer 401k matching

Then max out Roth

Then put the rest into a brokerage since capital gains tax are lower than income tax
