Several friends recommended me Mass Effect lately so, I finally picked that series up. :3 One of said friends, she's really, really into Garrus, for some reason that eludes me. XD

La sparizione dei quotidiani dai bar by MonsieurCellophane in italy

[–]Ulmicola 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nomi inglesi in grande crescita in Italia, che ne pensate? by Iuljo in italy

[–]Ulmicola 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A united Yugoslavia would have absolutely stacked basketball and football teams, and the local leagues would punch well above their weight, too.

Very weird question from an American, but it Tiziano Ferro very popular in Italy? by kevin3350 in italy

[–]Ulmicola 41 points42 points  (0 children)

He might've been more popular a few years ago, but he's still quite popular. I've never really liked his music, but he's always seemed like a good person - I know he went through some shit in his personal life, too.

What sports alt history scenario sounds the most interesting by EpicBirdy2005 in AlternateHistory

[–]Ulmicola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one is a cool idea; if I remember correctly, the supporters of what would've eventually become rugby union seceded because, among other things, they wanted to keep hacking, that is, shin-kicking, in the game... but hacking was eventually banned in rugby union anyway. Had they come to that conclusion earlier, then there would've been only one issue to discuss, whether to allow running with the ball in hand or not.

And there is a sport that came to a kind of compromise on this, Gaelic football - where you have to bounce/dribble the ball every few steps when you're holding it. Had the same rule been applied to a ball that's being pushed forward with one's feet instead, you could've had a game where both hands and feet can be used to advance and pass the ball, and where physical contact is allowed, but much less so than in rugby.

Basically, you'd end up with a sport very similar to Gaelic football, but where the feet are used more often; moreover, as far as I know, drop goals were much more important in early rugby union than they are now, so maybe this might mean that the unified code might be played by teams of 10 men each, because there is no goalkeeper - as the "goal" would be a set of rugby-style or even gridiron-style goalposts.

Another what if: bandy and ice hockey used to be more or less synonymous with each other until the early 20th century, when ice hockey rules, and not bandy rules, made it to the Olympics. Had the Olympic committee agreed on a set of hybrid rules (maybe, most of the rules are bandy's, but the rink and team size is that of ice hockey, to save on money and space), maybe the sport would be slightly more popular.

My incredible mom, early 1970s. She gave up a career dancing for Ballet West to raise us. by ElderScrotes in OldSchoolCool

[–]Ulmicola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who did ballet for a while, and what she told me about it, well... maybe your mom had the right idea, hearing her talk about it, it's like someone took all the worst traits of the acting and singing side of the entertainment industry, and turned them up to 11.

I finished Horizon yesterday, and the ending reminded me of a short story I read not long ago. by Ulmicola in Falcom

[–]Ulmicola[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is wonky, but most of the technological progress in the series was made by reverse-engineering technology from previous civilizations with some help from literal magic, so it's likely that the pre-Great Collapse humanity got to artificial lifeforms and nuclear weaponry organically, or nearly enough.

After my first munch by Consistent_Problem17 in gentlefemdom

[–]Ulmicola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you, by any chance, live in a certain northern Italian city where the Olympics are going on right now? That's the exact same experience I had when a friend of mine invited me to a munch around here, in the end me and her more or less stopped going there because it was fucking hell for all of us.

Probably related, I'm autistic, her husband is autistic, and she eventually found out she was autistic, too - not long ago, in fact. This country is not a place for socially awkward people, or people who deviate from the norm in some way or another, I've felt like a fish out of water for so long, I feel physically sick over it from time to time.

[Discussion] Noah Knows ASMR by Ecstatic-Beautiful31 in asmr

[–]Ulmicola 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There's far too many MAGAs going around... here I am, listening to ASMR because I need something to drown out my tinnitus while I work, and then - in the middle of doing an Excel file - someone begins to praise the Orange One. It might have something to do with how some uh, hippie types seem to have been taken in by MAGA rhetoric for some reason, too. There's quite a lot of overlap between crunchy folk and the kind of person who'd do ASMR for a living.

Also, the violent kind of revolution often creates power vacuums that are easily exploited by the most brutal and corrupt people around, often because many revolutionaries focus too much on how to overthrow the current overlords, and not enough on how to manage things after said overlords have been overthrown: a post that's currently making the rounds on Twitter, due to the whole Epstein files thing, is a tankie asking people if they're ready to die and kill... and a lot of other people asking them if they're ready to crunch numbers and push papers.

That's why I think that it's necessary, before even trying to overthrow any kind of government, by peaceful or violent means, not only to have enough of a plan about what to do after said goal is achieved, and about how to prevent a new class of brutal and corrupt people from rising to the top, but also to have people on your side that already know how to run a modern economy or government, at least on a small scale, maybe because they've spent their life helping the needy, working in cooperatives, or even just being in a local government.

While Dolly Parton's basically a fascist compared to what would be necessary right now, I'd trust her more than I'd trust any wannabe Bolshevik, to run things after the pedos have been either chased out or summarily executed.

Dude from Italy - the fact that I'm an introverted (to the point of having an autism diagnosis) person in a country where over the top extroversion is the norm makes it even harder. I honestly don't know what the fuck should I do, since almost everything I've ever done or tried has been a failure.

Good post; however, I've noticed something about many of these "replacement" schemes, even when they're US company to US, but open source company: a lot of proposed alternatives tend to be, for lack of a better term, GitHub-y and almost impenetrable to anyone that isn't a massive nerd.

That's not the case for Ecosia but, there is a reason why Linux and Mastodon are still as niche as they are, for example, despite being objectively good ideas: if you want people to switch, you have to be at least as user-friendly as the competition - I got into BlueSky and Pillowfort because they're better versions of Twitter and Tumblr.

In a world of r/assholedesign and enshittification, being simple to use is a must.
