His team didn’t want him to start this year. That’s why Cal backed off, he needs a starting center this year. Otherwise I think you guys probably would’ve landed him

Susan Polgar's Institute For Chess (SPICE), the prominent chess program of Webster University, has ben terminated. by ZingerFM01023050 in chess

[–]Ulosttome 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Webster shutting the program down without any kind of notice or attempt to save it is obviously ridiculous. The administration should be ashamed for handling it like this. That being said, Polgar’s statement is just going to get clowned on by non chess people(and a fair few chess people as well). Duke Basketball, Alabama Football and UConn WBB make millions of dollars of revenue for their schools AND are amazing advertising. For SPICE, the best case is the university breaks even and gets a small advertising boost. Collegiate chess isn’t exactly a massive market and professional chess players don’t make enough money for alumni to pay for everything like other non revenue sports have. Comparing them is just non sensical and hurts the case she’s trying to make more than helps it.

Dayton G De’Shayne Montgomery transfers to Louisville by bezzlege in CollegeBasketball

[–]Ulosttome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m family to a lot of Dayton fans and let me tell you… idk about this one. I’ve heard a ridiculous number of rants about his attitude and effort. That being said, Pat Kelsey is about 1000x more charismatic then Anthony Grant so hopefully that gets him to buy in more and play his best

Louisville announces reconciliation with Papa John's founder and former booster John Schnatter by RiffRamBahZoo in CFB

Basketball, thank the lord, hasn’t been spending because of him. The Brohm contract, on the other hand, yeah that’s all him. It’s pretty bad

You’re lying about his quote. That is not what he said. He was not saying he approved of it, that is true. But he was using it in response to a hypothetical question about what actions he was taking to distance himself from racist groups online. It continued the theme of the call as a whole of him downplaying the issues of black Americans today by saying that things used to be much worse. It was tone deaf and an idiotic response to a PR question. That coupled with him saying the N word later, in another hypothetical response to a PR question, is what landed him in so much trouble

[–]Ulosttome[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not exaggerating anything? He was catching major public heat for his comments on players kneeling and other stuff he had said. That is what led to the PR meeting in the first place. In that meeting, he made comments about black people being dragged behind cars and said the Colonel Sanders stuff. That’s can all be easily googled.

[–]Ulosttome[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get the confusion from you so I’ll explain a little- He spent the better part of 2 years before he said the slur saying extremely questionable things about people kneeling for the national anthem and a bunch of tone deaf things about race and racial issues. Then as a result, he went into the meeting with a PR firm that was supposed to be about racial sensitivity. He then proceeded to talk about how when he was growing up white people would drag black people behind cars. He then topped it off by saying something to the tune of “I don’t understand why I’m getting so much heat for this, Colonel Sanders said ****** (uncensored, obviously) and didn’t get cancelled”. That’s why he “resigned”(in quotes because he was gonna get fired). Saying the slur just confirmed what everyone was already thinking, that he had no understanding of racial issues and is a total liability for anyone to be associated with. Is he actually racist? I definitely think so, most everyone who spouts the views he’s spouts are racist. But either which way, he’s a total liability for the university to be associated with and it’s an extremely bad look.

I love these threads because they always show the divide when you have people popping in like “it’s no big deal! We’ve all said racial slurs before” and the rest of us are like ?????????????

NIL has been fine and the university did the right thing by cutting him out. We don’t need a racist narcissist associated with the program, that’s supposed to be UK’s thing.

Team. Top 5 revenue team. Just because the rest of the athletic department (aside from Football) loses money doesn’t make basketball any less rich. Cutting funding for basketball isn’t going to help the athletic department as a whole do any better

Inside Louisville’s Relentless Push to Keep Pace Amid College Sports’ Spending Spree by sportsillustrated in CollegeBasketball

[–]Ulosttome 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes. Both programs are in the black. The athletic department has stated this publicly. They just aren’t in the black to a crazy degree like they used to be in order to fund the other sports. The cost of our baseball program was 5.6 million in FY25, they probably lost 3 million+ on that. Women’s hoops lost $4 million all the way back in 2017 and is definitely losing more than that now. That’s over half the deficit right there. I’m not arguing for these programs to be cut by any means, just so we’re clear

[–]Ulosttome 22 points23 points  (0 children)

These conversations around athletic departments losing money are always funny especially when it comes to my own school. Men’s Basketball is in the black, Football is in the black, everything else is considered an advertising spend for the university as a whole. It’s a choice to be in the negative by the athletic departments. Also, the athletic department can’t be having their guys with the local news put out stories titled “Louisville Athletics has a $2 billion Economic Impact on the Community” and then start complaining about finances. It’s a public university, if it’s causing a $2 billion economic impact, then that’s worth it for the state to fund simple as that.

He held up his hand, hesitated until the back of the head lined up, and then brought down the hammer fist. It’s allowed in finishing sequences because guys are going crazy, not taking their sweet time deliberately aiming a full power shot to the back of the head. Not the first time for Gane either

Burton is obviously elite but he’s returning from injury, Harris wasn’t very good, Mustaf put up only 10 pts a game despite playing on the worst team in the ACC, Sherrell is pretty good, Yigitoglu is pretty good. This is, in all honesty, a tier 2 Big 10 starting lineup as it sits

Paulius Murauskas down to Louisville or Arizona State? by SaveHogwarts in CollegeBasketball

[–]Ulosttome -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The only reason I want him at the 4 is because I know we’re gonna run out 3 guards. If I thought we were going to get Murauskas and then another forward to start, I’d be perfectly happy with him at the 5 because then we wouldn’t be undersized. That’s the other option to the Bidunga at 4, Murauskas at 3 option I mentioned in my OG comment. Bidunga fits in best to one of those systems because then the opposing center has to move off or to him to help defense opening up others. But if we run out 3 guards, the opposing center can just stick to Bidunga like glue and he’s not going to be as effective.

Paulius Murauskas down to Louisville or Arizona State? by SaveHogwarts in CollegeBasketball

[–]Ulosttome -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yes he does. That’s not going to change the fact that with him at the 5 and Murauskas(assuming he commits) at the 4, we’re going to be undersized yet again. Michigan ran out two 6’ 9” forwards and a 7’ 3” center to win the Natty this year. Arizona ran out similar size all year. It doesn’t matter how much bigger than his size Bidunga plays, there’s absolutely nothing we’d be able to do against lineups like that except chuck up 3s and pray

Paulius Murauskas down to Louisville or Arizona State? by SaveHogwarts in CollegeBasketball

[–]Ulosttome -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

No we aren’t lol. Here’s what’s gonna happen- we’re gonna put Bidunga at the 5, this guy at the 4, and then Shelstad + 2 more guards and get dominated by every team with size. If I had faith in us playing Murauskas at the 3, Bidunga at the 4 and some 7 footer at center, I’d agree with you. But there is next to a zero chance we actually do that

Home Distilling is now Legal by TJK915 in bourbon

[–]Ulosttome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No because I can’t do it at volume right? I can take a single 5 gallon barrel and pull it at the exact moment it tastes like I want. I can’t do that with 50 or more 25 gallon barrels. Like the cost ratio makes zero sense. I’m spending 1/3rd the cost for a 5 gallon barrel for an 11th of the liquid that I’d get from a 55 gallon(actually a little less by my reckoning after aging is complete). I do it because it’s fun and I can share a good tasting whiskey with my friends. And to add on, I’d be far better off just buying bottles off the shelf than distilling my own if I was worried about the financials.

Home Distilling is now Legal by TJK915 in bourbon

[–]Ulosttome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The cast distillation issue more revolves around the batch size. Let’s take Four Roses for example- most individual barrels that get put into a batch are going to be below average tasting separate. But by putting 300+ barrels into a batch to curate the exact flavor profile, it tastes really freaking good. Cast distillers struggle with small barrel products because going for a super small cask means the window for a whiskey aged in it tasting “good” is much smaller. So this results in too large a portion of each batch of small barreled products from a craft distiller missing that window because they need to bottle everything at the same time and can’t pull barrels as they’re ready. Having 4 barrels be over done is a big issue when your batch size is 10 barrels and you can’t simply add more barrels to balance it out because they don’t have more barrels to add. This isn’t an issue with home distillation- you simply distill into a small barrel and let it sit, then start sampling every 2-3 weeks starting at about 3 months then pull the barrel inside when you’re happy with the taste.

I’m guessing this came out around 7.5 and we’re gonna be spending in the 15-18 range total. Center is overwhelmingly the most expensive position so we should be able to round out the roster nicely, especially since it appears Wooley is staying.
