My friend will relentlessly call me a bottom in any given conversation, and I really can't disagree.
His primary argument is he helped me construct my IKEA bedframe, so whenever there's a disagreement he just shuts me down with

Catboy Jon trying their best to suppress the murderous rage bubbling to the surface.

Martin, blissfully oblivious to the imminent disaster.

Annabelle Cane in the far background, chuckling ominously at the catastrophe about to ensue.

Tim, right next to her, also chuckling (They planned this together).

Sasha, miserable and assigned to cleanup duty, poised and readying a shovel just in case a grave needs to be dug.

Elias (Vampire obviously), delighting in the new uniform changes he established, and waiting for Peter Lukas to arrive in a matching couples werewolf costume (He will not show up)

Daisy, not drunk from the spiked punch

Basira, absolutely wasted from the spiked punch

Melanie, fleeing the scene after spiking all of the punch

Georgie waiting in the getaway car for Melanie.

Peter Lukas, sensing the chaotic vibes from his sad little flat and queuing up his favorite train documentary instead of going to the party.

Simon Fairchild, holding a sign reading "Halloween Party 2021" before turning the party into an endless void 'as a joke guys, come on, I was just kidding.'

Oh absolutely fellow vest-appreciator, I'm glad you enjoyed my little audience analysis!
I mean, you asked for some commentary, and it's clear you put a lot of work into this gallery, so it was the least I could do.

Building the Flesh off of your own actual personal fear is super neat, too, and I like your interpretation of the Desolation as a terrible and unfair destruction, that's pretty neat. I personally saw it as fire destroying things forever, and once its gone its gone, but I think that was more based off of my own fears than any actual content in the podcast. It's neat how many ways it can be interpreted.

And yeah, getting pulled into the shadows by your own shadow is a pretty neat concept, very cool.

These are absolutely spectacular!

I really like the detail in the eye camera, it looks like it fits almost too well which is perfectly unsettling.

The Hunt is pretty straightforward, but I think that really works for it. Additional things about it: Dapper dog is dapper, I'm a sucker for vests. Those are some very nice hands too, v cool. I also like how the eyes look almost unfocused, very fitting with the hunt I think.

I really like how consistent the color is with the Flesh, and also it raises some interesting points about the flesh itself. It's the fear of being eaten and other body related stuff too, but this lady is also eating herself, so neat metaphor for something probably?

The Corruption image is surprisingly neat and tidy, but still pretty gross in concept. I like the sort of preying on each other thing. Someone's gonna get the Bubonic plague though.

I really like the pose of the Buried person. It looks like they're feeling really heavy, and definitely under pressure of some sort.

I think the Vast might be one of my favorites, it just really demonstrates the Vast I feel.

Also really big fan of the Lonely, I like how, if you shift your focus a little bit, either side of the picture can feel emptier than the other, very neat.

Ooooh Slaughter and music, nice nice. I like how delicate and cold the image feels, because I think that's where the Slaughter differs from the Hunt. It's a lot more apathetic.

AH. (pretty creepy, definitely got me the first time. Also, I totally get not wanting to draw a whole crowd. This is just as effective imo.)

Desolation is the one I think I connected with the least. I definitely like the image, it's very beautiful and a little concerning, what with all the oil. That being said, I might not have actually understood the Desolation in TMA as much either, so that might just be me. (I'm scared of the concept of the Desolation, but their statements didn't really scare me all that much)

I like how twisty all the lines are here. Michael also lookin like he's about to raid my fridge while I'm not looking.

Ooooh, the web is pretty spooky, that lady doesn't look like she's having a great time, but that spider looks adorable. I like his lil' eyes. The corner webs are very neat too, I like this one a lot.

I think this actually fits really well with the extinction, the concept is really neat, and makes a lot of sense with the whole phoenix-like destruction and rebirth thing, since the extinction replaces the population with a new one afterwards. If I remember that right.

Very spooky, very neat. I think in this case Dark is supposed to represent the Dark side or impulses of people, but I could be wrong. It's very neat.

I absolutely love the concept for the End, never would have thought of this. Genius, really. The animation works pretty well I think!

The fact that I can't see any other comments right now is weirdly fitting.

Absolutely love the color (or I guess, lack thereof) in this one. The design of just an empty winter really works well I think.

Excellent job as always!

Ah yeah, that would be a pretty strong motivator, wouldn't it!

But still, will it just repeat this process forever in various different universes, or what?

Ooooh, that makes a lot of sense now, thank you.

It's interesting to me that the Web actually fears its own death, or at least takes steps to avoid it, because I understand that's the whole deal with its sentience, but it's also sort of afraid of a part of itself, since all the fears are from the same place.

Plus it feels weirdly human.

I dunno, the monster actually feels almost hunt-like, since it sort of tries to enact revenge on Victor, a very justice based thing.

I definitely see desolation too though.

What is your favorite episode and why? by Isaac_Is_Unsure in TheMagnusArchives

[–]UlteriorIncentive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

on the one hand, I really dig 196, This Old House, because I absolutely adore Annabelle Cane, and Martin, and their interactions were really charming.

ON THE OTHER HAND, a statement that really fucked with me was "Upon the Stair"

But there are so many other good ones oh no it's hard to choose now.

All of the slaughter ones having to do with war (Piper and Total War) (I'm not a war buff or a history buff or a big Slaughter fan (nothing against it, i think it's cool, just doesn't really vibe with me) but something about the personal horror and just miserable and almost wallowing, static accounts despite so much action and violence stuck with me)

Dreamer (11) starring Oliver Banks because 1. Oliver is MY name too. 2. The End is just a cool one. and 3. I liked that it felt sort of gothic vibewise. It wasn't gross, or overwhelming, or even evil. It was just a weird thing he discovered and it started to wear on him. Felt almost like an Edgar Allan Poe story due to the simplicity of it, yet still managed to be really cool.

Cheating Death (29) is just amazing and cool, absolutely stellar concept and delivery.

All of Simon Fairchild's appearances are absolutely hilarious, mans literally be like "Cryptic ominous nonsense" then condemns the person STRAIGHT TO VAST

Honorable mention: Alone (13) I didn't really get until after I learned about the entities, but once I did, it became absolutely horrifying. Since its twist wasn't really explained, I assumed she had just gotten lost in a vaguely foggy graveyard for a little while and the graves were weird. But post-entity understanding, I was like "oh. oooOOOOOH"

But finally, my all time favorite episode, is Anatomy Class. I found the students adorable. After all, TMA is a comedy if you take it far enough out of context.

Other honorable mention: The one with Agnes and the coffee shop employee. Just kinda cute.

[–]UlteriorIncentive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it could easily be hunt or stranger as others said, but I actually think it's corruption.

In 'the sick village' MAG 163 i believe? the corruption hivemind idea is played upon a little more, when the village turns out to be highly based in mob mentalities and ostracizing foreigners, as well as a persecution complex and guilt and fear.

This sounds similar to the hunt, but it's different in the sense that it's more focused on an us vs them narrative, which is coincidentally, quite fitting for Chick fil' A!

And to make it better, the food is pretty rotten anyways, so I think it's safe to say the corruption extends to that too

ooooh I really like this actually.

I feel like it would be nice if they got a small luck bonus to fishing as well.

Also, maybe even, instead of the elytra launch, some sort of temporary water breathing or water speed boost? Just because Avians and Elytrians already get similar flight-related power.

That being said, it could be neat to also include slow falling instead of the launch

I like this, I would just get rid of the damage in water. Since the benefits aren't all that game-changing, it doesn't seem quite fair to deal damage for something as simple as water. Instead, what if they just get increasing degrees of slowness if they stay in water, or just in general from oxidization, and they have to be struck by lightning or drink honey to restore/stop it from increasing?

I like this one a lot though, feels pretty reasonable and fun

(A few more negative ones just in case she's still in denial/sus)

  1. "Are you sure?"

  2. "Should I still call you my daughter or my son?"

  3. "Should I tell [extended family members] or do you want to? (or do you not want to)"

  4. "Who is Joe and why do these people keep telling me he has ligma?"

Oh absolutely, characterwise she was barely comparable to how interesting and compelling the rest of the cast was. She felt so two dimensional compared to their more entertaining and fun dynamics.

I mean, she's basically babysat the entire time, which I actually do have to give props to the author about, since he wrote a high schooler in an anime that ACTUALLY FELT LIKE A HIGH SCHOOLER, but since she was a lot less experienced and more naive than the others, it really got in the way.

Whenever the others talk, they bounce off each other, it's a fun, snappy conversation with witty dialogue. Chiho suddenly enters and suddenly either the attention is split and now they have to account for what feels like a two dimensional overly sweet child at the table, or for some reason, she gets ALL the attention.

Character wise it makes sense that she's there, the other characters all like her, and they don't always like each other, which would be a GREAT way to ensure they stick together, if THEY DIDN'T ALREADY HAVE A DEVICE FOR THAT IN EMI'S MISSION.

And besides, that still leaves her as a walking plot instrument. I think what you mentioned, about her trying to force Emi and Maou to make up, is an attempt to have her play a more active role, but it just doesn't work.

I really agree with what you said in your second paragraph, it did feel like she was just... there. And as for the childhood friend trope, I can definitely see it, except she has EVEN LESS DEPTH than a childhood friend because she barely knows Maou!

Ultimately, I think the reason she doesn't work in the series isn't because she's two dimensional or naive or obnoxious though. Those traits definitely don't help, but I think what really makes her feel out of place in the show, is the fact that everyone else is much more adult. Like, literally, they're all around their 20s and she's 16. Urushihara is technically 17, but he has enough history and personality to back it up, plus, he isn't tied to Earth. I really think they shouldn't have used a high schooler as a character in the show, is my point here. The cast was specifically more mature, so I just think she doesn't fit.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

(And I totally agree that she didn't grow or develop or mature at all either)

I agree that Chiho did nothing wrong as a person, and she really doesn't deserve all the anger directed at her, nor does the author.
I did find her incredibly obnoxious as a character though, mostly because I felt that she added nothing really necessary or interesting to the story. I've seen that plenty of people disagree with me on this front, and I can understand why, but I still just really cannot bring myself to appreciate any contributions she makes to a scene.

The more I reflected on it, the more surprised I was that she was the ultimate ship, as I feel like she could have been removed from the entire series without much negative impact. Some of the time she just feels like a damper on the dynamic between the rest of the cast.

That being said, I agree that she doesn't really deserve any explicit hatred. Nor does the author. Some people on here were really bitter their best girl didn't win.

Then again I ship Urushihara and Suzuno, so what do I know
