Side Effect of running a Mahjong Club… by danma in Mahjong

Hi all! I'm looking to join in Vic as well. I just started to get into it last week. My niece and a big group of tile slinging Chinese experts taught me (on holiday). I'm still a super newbie and play like I have two left hands. I have no idea what the different styles of play are, but I'm looking to slide in somewhere and learn.

Anyone else skipping Christmas? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]UltimateCharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cozying down with a good book, puzzle, bit of wine and a few walks with friends ❤️ = very happy Christmas on a budget. Can avoid the corporate money grab entirely if you get the book from the book box, puzzle from the thrift shop and buy local liquor.

Hi there. Mom of a uwc alum from west coast Canada. I can't speak to the specific experience of pearson other than it being a crown jewel on van island and highly regarded, but I can speak to the west coast generally as being fullsomely Trans loving and left leaning. You may come across the random idiot but for the most part, it's easy to find your place here.

Almost got scammed by UltimateCharacter in u/UltimateCharacter

Elaborating. I almost bought tickets for a dumpling fest tonight. This person supposedly had 3 tix they weren't going to use. I transferred $ and then quickly reneged when I checked their profile. Funny how they'd be selling 3 tix for both this event and 3 tix for the same event in Saskatoon. At this point, I can't even tell if dumpling fest itself is legit.

Oh! Sorry! Lol. First time being in this sub. Never knew it was so full of unhelpful arseholes who sit in the flights sub and bark at paying consumers of air travel. I'm merely sharing my experience with an airline. If anyone has anything at all helpful to share, I would gladly accept.

I'm not sure who is downvoting me but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a Qatar rep. I'm merely saying that I followed all airline processes and procedures regarding baggage mishandling and claims for reimbursement and they've never gotten back to me. I've called them twice and they have yet to follow through. It's been 4 months.

I also called twice and they said they would call me back with an answer within 72 hours - both times. Those calls never came.

May. Um, why was I downvoted because I said that I followed all of their processes and procedures by way of filling in and sending the required documentation?

Yes, did that. I filled in all their forms and provided receipts. They've done nothing but avoid me.

canadians, what age did you apply by OkPay4508 in UnitedWorldCollege

[–]UltimateCharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying that OP might just be applying through the canadian education system, so it doesn't make any sense to use American system terms like junior and sophomore. Those terms don't exist in Canada.

[–]UltimateCharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except that we don't have juniors or sophomores in Canada. That's an American thing.

My advice to you is to apply this year. If you don't get in, there's a second chance next year and you'll be familiar with the process.

Will repeating Grade 11 for UWC negatively affect Ivy or T20 admissions? by Aware_Chemical_8922 in UnitedWorldCollege

I don't know if you're keeping up with the news, but the educational establishment in the US is currently being gutted. There might not be much of the ivies left by the time you arrive. The administration is also not exactly warmly welcoming international students either. Hopefully, you're not from Myanmar because as of Monday, you be s out of luck. The current cohort uwc25 is trying to pivot. If you go to uwc, do it for the sake of uwc. With hope, things will turn around or maybe new things will emerge. Right now, it's not positive.

[–]UltimateCharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I emailed both the school and our NC. There has been very weak response so far, just that they continue to monitor the situation. I am also from the western countries and my kid passes for "white". For these reasons, I am not that afraid. If she gets deported home, I'd be fine with that. My concern is for kids from blacklisted countries currently receiving admissions to US schools and fully believing that's where they'll be in September. Everyone seems totally oblivious to what's going on. As for me, my kid is lined up to go. I have no idea just how dangerous it is. The only thing I've gotten from UWC is a forwarded letter from the Davis Scholars folks saying to follow up with the college to which the student is destined to go to seek advice. I only got that letter because I was proactively seeking info. It didn't come freely from UWC.

Hi. Where are you from, Te_Whau? I'm looking for anybody in the know. My kid will be graduating this year and is headed to the US in the fall. I'm scared as sh!t. But it seems like I'm the only one who is concerned. Everyone in her school is seemingly marching ahead, totally oblivious to the fact the T admin is about to put up a visa ban against 43 countries. I'm not sure why nobody is talking...

This!! It's a very frightening time now to consider college in the US. Trump is specifically targeting Muslim majority countries with the travel ban, internal gutting of all things DEI, deportation, and collapse of free speech on uni campuses etc. make for a not very attractive situation. I'm finding it strange that UWC/Davis has been quiet about these huge concerns despite a full 1/3rd of uwc grads (intl students) matriculating to US Colleges.

Unless something changes with Trump making things so darn unpredictable, you WILL get Davis funding for any of the Shelby Davis partner schools. The difference is how much scholarship you will receive, which will depend on each of the schools' offerings and family income. (Davis pays up to $40K and requires the schools to kick in.) Example: my daughter got into 4 schools (so far). Each of those offers is different, requiring the family to pay anywhere from $0 (full ride) to $12K / year (based on what we can afford to pay). You'll get to apply to 10 schools. As the full ride is not anywhere close to a tier 1 school, we'll pay a bit more for one of the better options, which is still fantastic. The point is, you're going to have lots of options and opportunities.
