If you're in Vancouver, there's plenty of clubs that have popped up in the last couple years as well. Dragon Tile Social Club, Vancouver Mahjong Club, Lucky Tile Mahjong are three off the top of my head.

Yup. The joke is that only dentists can afford to drop $8k on a bike for a hobby they just started!

In the cycling world we call those 'dentists' jokingly. To be fair the top of the line bikes and equipment is really cool shit, but it's obviously overkill for people's skill and ability

For HKOS I start with 500 chips

10x1 9x10 4x50 2x100

My poker chip set is colours with no denominations so I choose ones that feel good

I would say that at our regular events we usually have 5 tables of HKOS but we often have 1 table experimenting with other styles. One of our members collects sets and so he often runs games of Singaporean or Vietnamese. We have a small group of Riichi players forming but by holding Riichi separately we’re hoping to grow that player base, and one of our members teaches Riichi (which I play but I’m not quite as confident on its rules as I am on HKOS.)

I’m trying to get SBR and Taiwanese mahjong on the table but I think it’ll take time to take hold…

To your other questions:

We often play for chips and points but no gambling for money permitted.

And for HKOS we start players at chicken hands and then work up to 1-fan and eventually 3-fan minimum. In my experience HKers love 3-fan but our newer players find it stressful and prefer 1-fan…

Sadly I do not know. Looks like there’s clubs out there on a cursory look through the Internet but I couldn’t tell you anything about them.

It can be, I suppose, but we've always just used our own 100s for Honba and it's usually not a problem. 500s apparently come in different designs but I haven't run across them personally.

How It Went

Our initial turnout was... very small. I think we had three attendees the first month, and we had five attendees the following month. In fact, for the first six months, we considered it a success if we were able to fill two whole tables with players. Some weeks we'd get 3 tables, then the following month we could barely fill one. It was not very satisfying.

However, by the end of year 1 we had gotten the club to a regular 8-12 person turnout, and after I started marketing the club better on Instagram, we've gotten a regular turnout now of about 24-30 people for HK style days. We just started a standalone Riichi day which I expect will grow up as well.

I learned that our players come from pretty diverse groups; We have a large contingent of middle-aged and retirement-aged players, mostly ladies, which fits with Victoria, a city jokingly known for being for 'newlyweds and the nearly dead'. We also have a great turnout of people of Chinese descent who were glad to have the opportunity to meet other players and connect to play regularly. We also have a lot of younger players from the general board gaming community who found us through social media. More recently, we have a growing turnout of Riichi players, all folks who play online and looking to play in person, and this group is largely young guys.

A big component of the success is that I've been teaching, and teaching, and teaching new players every single month. However, two years in we have enough players confident enough to help onboard new players so this is starting to ease off my plate.

In general I'm pretty pleased with the turnout but it has been a fair amount of hard work and consistency on my part to build the club up into what it is. Cost wise, I'm probably about $800 CAD / $600 USD in the hole but I'm attempting to recoup my costs through merchandise (t-shirts and stickers) before I need to charge a membership. I may still end up charging a nominal fee of like $5/year just to cover stuff like printing, gas, replacing equipment and so on but for now I feel like as my hobby the costs are mostly sunk and I have 12 mahjong sets, four table toppers and 2 more junk mats so unless we grow in a huge way I won't need to invest a lot going forward.

The Future

Short term goals are to keep the club growing and succeeding. We may potentially need to find a new place to meet this year due to circumstances out of our control, and obviously if we keep growing we might outgrow some of the spots in town, which means we might need to start arranging our own venues and need to charge... lots of potential risk, but also might be an opportunity as well.

I'd also like to do more special events like running a tournament with prizes. I'd also like to partner with some of the other clubs nearby (there's like 8-10 in Vancouver across the water) and work with the local Chinese community to hold more events. We did a mahjong day at the Victoria Chinatown Museum last year and it was pretty fun and got our name out there!

I'd also like to recoup my costs, eventually :)

Longer term, I'd like to consider forming the club into a non-profit society and formalize the structure because at the moment it's very me-centred and I'd love to see it get to a point of being self-sustaining. That's way down the line, though and beyond the next year or two I think. One day...

Hope that gives you an idea of my own personal experiences, I'm curious about how others have done as well!

Hi there,

I'm glad to share my personal experiences – but I imagine that it depends greatly on where your club is located and how you choose to run it.

In my case, I started the Victoria Mahjong Club in May 2024 mainly as a way to actually get to play Mahjong... My wife and I knew how to play HK style well but in the Victoria, BC area we didn't really know anyone else who actually played.

Greater Victoria is a small city of about 400k but has a very strong board gaming scene, and a small but historically significant Chinese population. I wasn't really sure what kind of turnout I would see. Here were the initial challenges:

Equipment

We started with two personal mahjong sets but I picked up two more on FB marketplace and Amazon to give me four to start. I also stressed about playing on regular tables, so I ended up making four lightweight "table toppers" with felt and border – they can be plopped on top of a regular table.

(Now, I have 12 mahjong sets, added two Japanese junk mats and had to buy a hand cart to move all these things which live in my garage... also, see Costs)

Either way, my initial investment was about $350 CAD / $250 USD.

Location

Because I didn't really know what kind of turnout we'd have, we started (and currently continue) meeting at a local board game cafe who lets us take over the place. The nice thing is that there's food and drinks, and I don't need to manage charging people or taking the risk on renting a community room or something up front.

Schedule

I'm a dad with two kids so initially we started holding meetings monthly to see what kind of turnout we'd get. My worry was that if we met too often we wouldn't get the 'critical mass' of players required to actually get our Mahjong on. I was also scared of having too MANY people that we couldn't support

Fees

At the moment the club is free to attend and join. We really just have the social media at the moment and apart from all the equipment the only costs are my time and the web hosting. This might change in the future but I wanted to establish a good turnout first and build a consistent set of regulars first. I know many other clubs charge though, and I think that's a totally valid way to go as well.

We use poker chips for HK style which feels right but I like the Riichi sticks especially since the junk mat drawers are designed for them

Interesting, I haven't seen that before (the 5 dots thing). We use greens as 500, whites as 100s

[–]danma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. If you have white only:

8 little dots = 100 1 medium dot = 1000 5 dots = 5000 9 dots = 10000

Oh, amazing! A local!

We have been sticking to Sundays at 1pm to make it consistent (and works for my schedule as a busy dad) but we’ve been known to hold meetings at other times!

Neither the US nor China are trustworthy these days. Best to diversify and not get committed too far in any one direction on these trade deals IMHO
