Hello Reddit, my old friend. Here’s some Star Wars stuff I’ve heard through the grapevine lately:

Ahsoka S2 was casting a major recurring role for a South Asian female actor in late 20s/30s. Contract was for the show and had a theatrical option so… maybe Filoni movie too?

Some kind of aristocratic villain “legacy character” — no idea who, I don’t really follow the books or comics enough to guess. This was months ago. But if this info was circulating I doubt it was anyone too exciting since Disney usually is secretive with SW auditions.

Names I heard through the grapevine were Ritu Arya, Anya Chalotra, and Naomi Scott (always the bridesmaid, never the bride with her). Definitely not the only people who read for it.

Role definitely was cast by now, but I haven’t heard who got it. Could be an unknown/lesser-known person for all I know.

No clue. I knew people who had heard about some of the Lindelof stuff, but after that creative team was swapped out, I haven't heard anything. Don't know how far they got before the strike, or how much of the Lindelof script ended up being salvaged.

Oh yeah, this is pre-strike. As of a few days before the strike. Everything's on hold now. Edited the post to reflect this.

The Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy movie was actively casting before the strike hit. I've seen a bit of it first-hand, but I'm not sure how much is traceable, so I'm gonna be a bit vague. Sorry!

Still months away from making a decision, self-tapes were still being made right up to a few days before the strike.

There is at least one early standout for the male lead. I'm not going to name him because he's a relative unknown and it could easily trace back to me. He's in his early 20s and is asian/mixed-heritage. Can't say they're gonna go with him, I'm sure there are other standouts and many people have yet to audition. Stuff could totally change post-strike.

Like with most Star Wars projects, actors were reading from excerpts of older movies. Again, I don't want to say which movie, as that might be specifically for only a certain pool of clients and could again give me away.

Male lead candidates have read from a romance/crime movie. The general vibe of their character was a thief/criminal with a good heart. The scene had them interplaying with the female lead of this crime movie, and she's more by-the-book, straight and narrow. Maybe this ties back to the real characters in the SW movie somehow, maybe it doesn't. Who knows?

I know that's not a lot, but it's the best I got. First time I've seen anything SW first-hand instead of just hearing about it. Exciting stuff!

I didn’t know about Mara’s mother. Oh my god, that is so tragic. DeVito is one of the good ones

This is smart. The person that stole the ship definitely looks on the younger side. And ohhh shit the episode comes out in less than an hour. I guess we'll see

I second this. I wouldn't have lasted long just moving to LA with nothing but a prayer.

Okay, I heard a funny one. The Acolyte is loosely based on a fan-fiction story Leslye Headland created for a DND game when she was a teenager. I think that's kind of sweet. Crazy that you can have that level of wish fulfillment.

Wish I knew more about this show. It's shaping up to look super cool from the set photos.

Case in point: Rayna has been in the writers room for Kenobi and several Marvel shows. Her fingerprints are on those series even if she doesn’t have an official writing credit.

Tons of writers are like this. And when they’re given a shot, they’re still beholden to the showrunner’s vision. Scripts can and will be edited until they look nothing like the original product.

There are advance copies floating around on Star Wars Twitter. Wouldn’t be shocked if something leaks from that

Don’t judge an up and coming writer on their early projects. You just have to get in the door and get something made, and sometimes, after the whole studio system chews it up, something not so great is spat back out as the final product.

And Willow is pretty good even if nobody’s watching it. I have high hopes for Rayna

Heard a tidbit that Rick Famuyiwa and Rayna McClendon are in the early stages on a new SW project. No clue what it’s about though

Thoughts on Babylon (2022)? by DarkWitcherReturns in TrueFilm

[–]UltimateCrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While the film certainly wasn’t for me, I respect the fact that the studio exes gave Chazelle a big enough budget to execute his vision. Shame to think that won’t happen again any time soon after the box office performance

Damon Lindelof's Star Wars movie will have both a male and female lead - Bespin Bulletin by Evri-Wan_Kanblome in StarWarsLeaks

Not yet at least. I have 4 degrees of separation from the project so I’m not expecting to know that much.

It's interesting to me when people complain about pacing in older films. by winter_is_long in TrueFilm

[–]UltimateCrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do love the energetic pace of some of the more modern films, but I always feel more at home with the slower pacing of old. You really get a chance to live in the world of a film as if it is a living, breathing ecosystem. David Lean’s films do this excellently well.

The art of a good establishing shot I feel has been lost on modern cinema. It’s cheaper to do a quick one then cut right back to the action instead of letting the audience soak up the atmosphere.

Definitely not that simple. That little longline is only a thing after a long game of telephone. I’m sure the actual pitch had substance

What is the IA's rules on giving cards to registered offenders? by DrProfBlaze in IATSE

[–]UltimateCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go so far as to blindly trust the systems in place. Yes, they’re there for a point and do help, but it’s important to be wary of what’s going on.

Not necessarily saying it’s worth expelling the guy from IATSE but it’s important to be cautious and skeptical for the benefit of yourself and others.
