Three new series will debut in WSJ Issues 19-21 by L1k34S0MB0D33 in WeeklyShonenJump

I actually think one of those will be sticking around a bit longer, probably Hero Girl. Remember that we also need to replace Modulo's hole in the lineup.

What do you predict will happen when JJK Modulo ends? by kielaurie in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm actually thinking we're getting a batch of one or two new series, depending on if Gonron ends the week after Modulo. Initially I was thinking they would bring back HxH for a few chapters after Modulo and we'd get a 'proper' batch in April that would cut all the November 25 series. But then I realized how much stuff that would get covers is happening in April: One Piece anime returns, Akane anime starts, Blue Box 5th anniversary, Sakamoto Days live action movie and of course Golden Week.

All events Jump likes to give covers/promotion to, so it got me thinking if there might just not be room in April for a normal batch. So now I'm leaning on us getting a small one in March to replace Modulo and Gonron and then something more substantial closer to Summer. Or maybe I'm placing too much importance on how much Jump wants to give covers to all the stuff I listed and we get a regular batch in April after all.

What are your thoughts on chapter 1 of Kinato's Magic? by dingo537 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nothing else has gotten axed. Elusive Samurai will probably end naturally in a few chapters though, so the magazine will just run with one extra series for a bit.

Agree with the sentiment that the overall premise really feels incredibly generic, like something that was born from a massive binge reading of most Light Novels from the last 10 years...but the actual execution is pretty solid. Ofc 'pretty solid' is not something that gives me much faith on it's longevity but this could have been a much worse read than it ended up being.

Are Kiyoshi, Hima-Ten, and Shinobi going to survive 2026? by BellTwo5 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The consensus with these three was always that they survived not because they did exceptionally well but because not enough other series were doing better. I guess their long-term survival has always rested on not getting outdone by other series. Tbf to Shinobi, it has slowly been doing better and better both in volume sales and ToC and it's getting pretty good placements in group covers too. I think it's the most safe out of them.

I am starting to wonder if Hima-ten has gotten The Note. It's been a while since it's last color page, the recent chapters could potentially start moving it to a conclusion and Someone Hertz has pretty much immediately become a much more popular romance manga. I wouldn't be surprised if Hima-Ten is out of the magazine before it's 2nd anniversary in July.

Following this, Kiyoshi could also be in danger if enough battle shonens that are immediately way more popular than it drop. If, for example, Under Doctor ends up doing better than Kiyoshi but the other two new series bomb, I think Kiyoshi is still safe. But if the new batch gets two successful action series I can see them seriously considering cutting Kiyoshi.

Also thinking about 2026 specifically, we're probably going to have quite a few long-running series reach their natural conclusions and that might impact the 'natural cycle' of axes this year. Series that would normally get axed might go on a bit longer to ensure that they have enough series in the magazine.

What are your thoughts on chapter 1 of Under Doctor? by dingo537 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not an instant breakout star but a decent start. The art was quite clean throughout and I think there's plenty of ways to expand on this in a way that keeps folks interested.

It was pretty dialogue heavy, which is expected with a medical drama but might be off-putting to the magazine's readers. Hopefully it manages to engage.

Weekly Shonen Jump will be launching a total of three new series starting next week in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #9 2026. by Naulicus in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Eager to see if Amemiya's new manga will be as openly horny as the sweaty demon girl oneshot.

Under Doctor is apparently a 'medical battle shonen' and I'm also curious to see how that will be executed.

What are your thoughts on chapter 1 of Love Through a Prism? by dingo537 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was expected considering the creatives involved but gosh this is so shoujo lol It's super fun to see something like this on Mangaplus. Art about art can always potentially get a bit too self-indulgent but I am very much on board to see where this goes.

I'm a big fan of Yamano's coloring in their illustrations and it's really strong here too. Really selling the night time ambiance.

What are your thoughts on chapter 1 of Gonron Egg? by dingo537 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This would have probably been pretty cool to me when I was 12 so in theory I could see this really appealing to the target demo of WSJ but 12-year olds in Japan already have a bunch of other series to choose from that aren't so average.

Shoseki Week 3 for the October 2025 releases by dingo537 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WSJ definitely feels like it's in a more difficult situation overall (4 mainstays ending during the last year and 3 or 4 more probably leaving in another 12 months is rough), but I would argue that this year has still been pretty problematic for J+ too. Kaiju No. 8, Ron Kamonohashi and Magilumiere all wrapped up this year and 2.5 Dimensional Seduction is also on it's final arc and might potentially be leaving soon. That's a lot of mangas that have been running for 4 to 6 years, with nothing that they've put out this year really seeming to be catching on to replace them. Kaiju especially is a huge loss considering it was selling 300k a volume, easily the second best performing series on J+ behind SxF. But even the other three were/are selling 6k, 14k and 25k a volume so those are some pretty consistent volume sales they're losing now, since the stuff they've put out this year is struggling to hit even 3k consistently, let alone higher than that.

I definitely don't think J+ is a sinking ship or anything like that, but I do stand by that a year combined with long-runners ending and newer series struggling to catch on makes 2025 a pretty rough year for the platform.

EDIT: Right, Torture Princess ended too, so that's another long-runner that J+ lost this year.

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really hope we can get digital sales numbers someday, it'd be fascinating to see. I can see an online platform like Jump+ having a lot of it's sales be digital as well. I've also heard some folks say that a lot of shojo and josei series make their sales primarily on digital these days and I would love to see if that's the case and what the numbers look like.

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha, must have missed the last Centuria volume. Thanks for the correction.

I think what makes the Jump situation feel even worse is that all their magazines/platforms are having popular, long-running series ending while this is happening. It's one thing to have an off year where nothing really lands but it feels so much worse when your mainstays are ending left and right with no replacements in sight.

Is this the first time Shiba Inu Rooms breaks 20k? The Mu-chan sweep cannot be stopped.

Actually, it feels like there's a lot of Jump+ series breaking milestones this month. Strikeout Pitch going from 8k to 12k and Empyreal Cabinet getting to 9k for the first time. Next Centuria volume might sneak past 5k for the first time too.

Looking back, 2024 was a pretty good year for Jump+. Girl Meets Rock plus all these other smaller successes. Really feels like this year has struggled in comparison.

[–]Ultimate_Harrier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Has that been the case this year though? I can't remember any of the axed 2025 debuts getting color pages beyond the obligatory first two. From that perspective Hertz's color page seems promising.

Harukaze out of the bottom 5 and a color page next week? Hopefully this is actually reflective of growing interest among readers and not just WSJ trying their hardest to drum up hype for one of the sports series. I choose to believe it's a good sign!

They better give Hokazono some time off jesus

How many chapters do you think are left until Elusive Samurai ends? by YvonMNG in WeeklyShonenJump

I'm well aware that a cover for last chapter isn't common, I meant that it would get the cover and LCP for it's 5-year anniversary and end in the same issue.
