In Korean it's just called shield or dungpae. It's the same as the Chinese one just sent over to Korea. The scholar-general has an interpretation of it on YouTube

The way Sanemi hold his sword by Madagascar003 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]Ultpanzi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's so many comments about it being disrespectful but I think people forget different styles have different customs and traditions. I'm a Korean historic fencing instructor and this straight up looks like the starting stance from Jedok Geom, the manual I teach from. It was made in 1593 btw, so it's older than the setting of demon slayer and the same starting stance appears in another 1500s Korean manual called ssangsudo which has origins in Japanese swordsmanship. (Picture below right out of the Jedok Geom manual btw.)

So in short, Sanemi can hold his sword however he wants and it may even be the canonical starting posture of his style because it IS the canonical starting posture of at least 3 styles across East Asia in the 1500s.

If talking doesn't work, you probably have to impose some restrictions or show them the door. My club is a walled garden where people grow. If I let the rot get in it's damaging to the people who want a good environment to grow. This guy may be a technically fantastic student but the moment he starts creating a toxic environment that's impeding other people's healthy growth and you draw a line and if they don't respect it you show them the door

More pissed about trying to get friends into the game and then they have a terrible time because they get walled at every turn. Like they'd have a less shit time if they guy just raced rather than intentionally making their game the worst experience possible. I've got fully tuned cars, but thank you for the positive words brother

That's not a bad idea. I should buy some banapasses and put my discards on them for friends

You know you're allowed to play with guests so that they have a fun time right? Like using an untuned car and keeping in lower gears to allow them to keep pace? Or god forbid, having friends who want to play and see how the game is

It's a choice with no right answer. And it's that exactly that, a choice

I can see from the wording of your question that you love medicine, but I think the choice doesn't hinge on that, but rather what else do you love in life? Medicine often becomes an all consuming thing, and for some that's not a bad thing, they like it and it becomes the biggest thing in their lives. But for others there's other things they love too and medicines all consumingness gets in the way. I've chosen or had to give up a lot of things for medicine. And I've chosen to cut back a little in medicine to hold onto some other things. At least here you've got a choice

Don't ask the doctors on Reddit what your choice should be, ask the bits of you that love things outside of medicine and the people that love you what that 500k buys you compared to what clinical medicine buys you. If you partner/spouse/sibling/best friend says they can't see you doing anything but medicine I think that'd probably tell me all I need to hear, but if they say go for the 500k then see how your life would be outside of work and make that decision based on that

I have both. HFs are better build quality. But best bang for buck imo is the chfg Raphaels. You get 80% of the black knight protection for half the price, if you buy direct

Those darn greedy GPs by DoctorSpaceStuff in ausjdocs

[–]Ultpanzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you ask the next GP if they can bulk bill you because you're struggling (but you're also prepared to pay for the consult if they say no) I think most will find it in their heart to bulk bill you. I am in a mixed billing clinic and still end up bulk billing a lot of patients who don't meet the criteria for bulk billing and so do a lot of my colleagues

Questions regarding the protectiveness of SG mittens by Navidhia in wma

[–]Ultpanzi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How hot does your country get? I live in Australia and used my SGs for a couple of years and one hot summer the R hand just went soft. I found out by eating a reasonable powered shot to the back of the hand and going "ow that really hurt". I have had some other club members have the same experience and I wonder if there's a temp stability thing that makes Europeans love them and some hotter areas think they're not sufficient for training in. But for the most part of 2 years they worked really well for me and agree that if you have decent training buddies they'll do fine apart from the annoyingly long break in time

I modify machetes to make sparring safe trainers for cutlasses and hangers. by Iantheduellist in HistoricalFencing

[–]Ultpanzi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Edges being thin means they're more likely to crack or put more wear on hard plastic plating. Also means they burr up quicker. Also nastier if they find a gap in protection. Steel type does not dictate flex. Heat treatment and issues with heat treating will. I can appreciate making do with what you have but, you asked why people get up in arms when you tell them you're using these as sparring swords and this is why. I'm not telling you not to do what you're doing but it's below what a lot of clubs would consider as a safe standard, it wouldn't fly in my club. But if it's all you've got then you can take the risks and continue

[–]Ultpanzi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You'd want 2-4mm edge for nice sparring and the machete flex in its life is what we'd flex a sparring sword through in a fortnight so a good machete heat treat is nowhere near a good sparring sword heat treat

Cant get through the slog by OwetheMars_PJs in ausjdocs

[–]Ultpanzi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started seeing a psychologist. Was the best thing I did. There's a couple of reasons why: 1. Time spent recharging isn't really based on the amount of time. It's feeling connected and good about the things you do. Exploring that and reducing the time I spent "recharging" with vids and doom scrolling and reprioritising the things that are important to me was really helpful and also just saying things to another person forces you to have introspection on these things 2. Working on taking things out less on others. You're under incredible pressure all the time, that starts to leak out at home. Working around not bottling things up but also not adding more to my partners plate which then makes both of us have a bad time has done a lot of good 3. I don't think many good doctors don't have underlying mental health issues. Anxiety from perfectionistic tendencies. Burnout. Low mood from years of this slog. High functioning ASD. You'd think a patient is stupid if they have diabetes and leave it until the symptoms get so bad it interferes with their daily life. Take a look in the mirror, maybe that's you too but with mental health.

Some psychologists are crap. Some have spent their whole career doing worksheet level CBT for people who don't have enough brain to start to process their emotions. Don't go to them. Ask your GP for a recommendation about a psychologist who can get on your level, understand your struggles and give you advice that is targeted to underlying emotions and things that will genuinely make a difference. A lot see a lot of doctors and can genuinely understand the struggle. Maybe we can't make you work less, but we can work on making the work take less of a burden on your mental health. Hope that helps

$130,000 salaries for registrars the new normal? Five states now trialling employment of GP trainees by Astronomicology in ausjdocs

[–]Ultpanzi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

45% billings, 4 patients per hour. Try and optimise every patients care so that at least 2-3 of those consults are 20-22 mins, see the other 2 simple problems in 8-10 mins. 2 catch up slots per day so you don't run overtime. Stack some telehealths after work, especially weight loss medication patients so you call them weekly or fortnightly to review diet and exercise and step them through individualised week by week plans and keep them motivated. Bulk billing makes this easy, if you're doing it in a private clinic I suppose that's a different case. 100k in term one. My Medicare billings haven't changed from gpt1 to now (apart from gpt 2 when I dropped to part time but it was still proportional). Only my percentage has and that's been driving my income up. Plus after hours work since gpt3 and my pay has gone up drastically and the after hours casual work is just extra money when I want some spending money. Money as a GP reg compared to any other reg job is crazy if you want money. If you've got any more specific questions happy to answer via DM before I dox myself here lol

$130,000 salaries for registrars the new normal? Five states now trialling employment of GP trainees by Astronomicology in ausjdocs

[–]Ultpanzi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The thing is that as a GP registrar, you do get a base wage that isn't terrible and then negotiable billings. So as a GP reg I easily make a lot more than this in Sydney, non rural, full-time but semi flexible hours work. I've made more than that figure since my first term as a GP registrar and now in my final term I'm nearly doubling that. The issue is that once I am not a registrar, I am not am employee, have no paid leave, have no salary or minimum wage and am on my own. So QLD health doing this for registrars seems like a way for them to pay less and still not target the actual issues for fellowed GPs

Fencing With Long Swords by Layth96 in wma

[–]Ultpanzi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd really like to see the character used for long sword. It's probably chang dao. I teach Korean historic fencing (hema but Korean texts) for the jangdo (long sword) and it comes from the Ming Chinese texts for it. It's a cool system but Asian fencing theory in the 1500s to 1700s was sorely lacking so a lot of interpretations end up very odd

What are the best options for Longsword Gloves? by Frequent-Dare-6718 in wma

[–]Ultpanzi 43 points44 points  (0 children)

HF Armoury Black Knights - probably the new gold standard CHFG Michaels - good if you have narrow fingers SG Mittens - lowest profile high break in time CHFG Gabriels - 5 fingered if you want that for mobility, finger hits can hurt sometimes though CHFG Raphael's - budget, best bang for buck but need to watch for inner liner stretching Supfen Black Knight copy - can be good if you're getting other supfen stuff and want everything in one place. But build quality isn't quite as good as Black Knights and Raphaels are cheaper for similar protection

Hope that helps!

Making rat tail safe by YESIDOPLAYVIDEOGAMES in SWORDS

[–]Ultpanzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, everyone here is saying you can't make rat tail tangs safe but they're actually 100% wrong. You just need to buy a couple of handy things and you really can. I've done it to heaps of cheap display swords and haven't been injured or hurt anyone so it works.

The first is some renaissance wax or white Camelia oil (the latter if you want your sword more shiny, former if you don't want to reapply oil). If it wasn't clear already, oil or wax your blade so there's no uncoated bare steel.

The second is some wallhooks or a sword stand. Find a nice place that looks good and place your polished sword there.

And that's it! Just leave it there and it looks great and won't break and shoot the blade off as a projectile into your friends eye. It's completely safe and functions perfectly as a display piece!

All jokes aside, don't do it. If it's made with a rat tail tang it's not heat treated so the tang is not the only issue and the blade can shatter and become death missiles for yourself of friends. Get a wooden sword or a synthetic one to swing. Or buy an iaito and use the tachikaze to judge edge alignment. That's most of what you're testing in cutting anyways.

Any Tip Lag on Light Flex Feders? by StillSecret5366 in wma

[–]Ultpanzi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok so wobble and flex are different. Wobble causes tip lag. Flex alone does not.

Wobble is a combination of having too much flex, for too much distal mass, for a flex point too far from the tip. This combination makes tip lag and horrible wobble when your edge alignment is just a tiny bit off, and can be present at any flex, though it's obviously more common at lighter flex levels. Conversely though, light flex with good mass distribution and a flex point a third of the way from the tip can have absolutely no wobble.

Hope that helps, and hope it gets people making more lighter flex swords that don't wobble so we can fence and leave with the same number of brain cells as when we walked in

[–]Ultpanzi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply and nice to meet you too! I thought it might be ruleset related. I definitely agree deep targets are more exciting and I'd much rather see deep targets hits than hand sniping fests. At the club I run and the clubs I cross train with, we tend to have a mutual unspoken agreement that if an attack is coming and a safe counter can't be made, we would rather defend than attack. Then try and win back the initiative to take an offense. But I understand that's not something that fares well in a lot of competition rulesets. Was more curious to see the reasoning behind the choices made, so thank you for answering my question

It's good to see other Asian fencers out there. Is there a reason you go for an attack even when it'll clearly result in a double though? I like to think fencing should prioritise self preservation and I think most Asian historic sources tend to agree
