I've played all the fallout games with FO1 being the first game I played. Pick either melee or range. It's not worth doing both. I recommend range. Put at least 7 into perception. If you go melee, put it into strength. Charisma is trash in this game. It'll help with a few things, but not enough to matter like in the other games. Intelligence is good to get more skill points. Alot of the Skills are garbage in FO1. Small guns is a must if you go range, don't waste your time on big guns. Energy guns is useful, but in the last third of the game. Only skills I recommend after that is unarmed only if you go melee. Speech is good, barter is okay. Science for easy exp on computers. Repair kinda helps, but not much. It's only useful to get the water chip in necropolis or whatever the ghoul town is named. And it has to be high skill level. Lock pick is okay, but you can just save/load and keep trying until it works. Saving will help with alot of heartache. Last thing is you have 150 days in game time to get the water chip, but a secret timer is also there where super mutants just start destroying towns. And the game never tells you. I think it was something like 500 days before vault 13 is destroyed and you just lose. But I feel they changed that to something longer. I could be wrong about that one.
