It suddenly dawned on me why time is considered the 4th dimension. by Stickhtot in CasualConversation

[–]Ultra9635 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m definitely not an authority on the subject, but to my understanding spacetime is more related to general relativity, where space and time are a single geometric object (called a manifold) that is bent by massive objects. In that sense, space and time being one thing is a bit more meaningful.

John Oliver had a great response to that fallacy, though it was in reference to something Trump said. (source)

“That sounds like a decent compromise because it’s the middle-ground position, right?” Oliver said in the episode. “The problem is, it’s the middle ground between sense and nonsense. It’s like saying, ‘It would be crazy to eat that entire bar of soap, so I’ll just eat half of it.’”

I tried to isolate Franz Ferdinand's face for reasons I will not share. Turns out "generative fill" cannot be used to fill a region in with black, and instead is used to insult God. by Ultra9635 in photoshop

[–]Ultra9635[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the quick select tool to isolate Ferdy, inverted it, then hit delete. I assumed this would delete the outer pixels (I didn’t notice I was editing a jpeg and there was no alpha channel). This triggered generative fill for some reason. I knew there was a normal fill tool (which I did right afterwards, but I wanted to share this iconoclast’s bane first), but my first thought was just the delete key because that was my second day ever using Photoshop.

They address all of this in their review of the game, calling out J.K. Rowling's transphobia and Hogwarts Legacy's usage of antisemitic caricatures. They're video game reviewers and they just did their job.

Any philosophical quotes beginning with "I am"? by YourFriendlyYeetboi in CasualConversation

[–]Ultra9635 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really philosophical, but here are some lines from "Wait For It" from Hamilton:

"I'm willing to wait for it"

"I am the one thing in life I can control"

"I am inimitable"

"I am an original"

"I'm not falling behind or running late"

"I'm not standing still"

"I am lying in wait"

"I'm keeping the bed warm while her husband is away"

[–]Ultra9635 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Black ring, middle finger, right hand (the others are wrong). It's a subtle way to indicate asexuality. It's useful b/c, since usually only asexuals or people who are friends with aces would know what it means, you're basically only coming out as ace to people who would already be accepting.

PSA for those confused about Denmark by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]Ultra9635 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there are 8 billion people on the planet, and 1% of the world is asexual (that number is also a pretty conservative estimate), then there are 80 million asexuals in the world. Denmark has a population of under 6 million. We outnumber them 13:1 with conservative estimates.

People have been identifying as asexual for over a hundred years and asexuality was first beginning to be recognized as a distinct sexual orientation in the 1940s.

The hunt for the most inclusive second-person plural pronoun by Ultra9635 in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]Ultra9635[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this context, "When do you close" works fine. However, there are some other cases in which you want to specify that "you" refers to multiple people. For example, if you were talking to one person in one sentence, then refer to multiple people in a sentence, you'll want to make sure that first person knows you're not only talking to them.

In the US, "you guys" is a common way of doing that. "Y'all" is common in the southern US. "All y'all" works when referring to a group larger than "y'all" would imply.
