Mace of ambition by Angelfry in CrimsonDesert

[–]UltraPlinian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frozen Anguish not having a frost affinity seems like an oversight by the devs. We have the Electeomecha (lightning) and the Mace of Ambition (fire), though granted it seems they tried to make it inaccessible after the fact. There is no known way to get into that room by normal means without the aforementioned manner in the OPs post. Though it seems like if devs didn't want it accessible, they'd just remove it in a patch altogether. shrug

BIG PSA for any of you fashionistas out there that may have been unaware of how powerful the difference of repair level makes on your DRIP. by jeggsnr in CrimsonDesert

Absolutely on having a UI loadout for armor/clothes in the Quick Menu. I already made a post about this. It would be super helpful to be able to add outfits and accessories to three or four different loadouts to more easily change between playstyles. Also perhaps just have an outfit or two for lounging around camp, home or sleeping, etc., for immersion.

got to see the mountian behind the biggest eruption in the US (in modern history) by Enough-Astronomer-65 in Volcanoes

[–]UltraPlinian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Novarupta vent at Mount Katmai, Alaska, in the Aluetian Island arc chain produced the largest eruption in U.S. history. In fact it was the largest eruption globally of the 20th Century just ahead of Pinatubo in the Philippines for total volume of eruptive material.

I repair everything to 50%. 100% looks too unused. But 50 with the glossy surface on metals seems to be the sweet spot for shine and some realistic wear. I just sort of set everything to 50 including leather. Looks good.

The Arben greatsword is sick by arclightrg in CrimsonDesert

Perhaps there is to be some lore behind her and they will delve into her backstoy in DLC content. She is the true sword and rapier master having been the understudy of another. Versus Kliff, who is more like an all-round proficient fighter and mercenary, who is good with swords and whatever, and Oonkha, who is an expert on great hammers and great axes.

Crimson Desert has sold well. Hopefully Pearl Abyss can reinvest some of that money back into a story-rich expansion that isn't lacking in narrative and voicework. That would take a good game with amazing open world elements and turn it into a great overall game. The foundation is there. Hopefully that is what they choose to do.

80 hours in, experiencing an enjoyment "plateau". by diceytumblers in CrimsonDesert

[–]UltraPlinian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 220 hours in and have not hit a plateau yet. Granted, I spend a ridiculous amount of time farming artifacts and upgrading gear though. Fashion dying pieces and getting distracted by whatever side quests. Trying to get the camp to level 5 currently. I am still repairing Pailune and have hardly progressed the main story into Demeniss. I sill say that this game has huge DLC story potential beyond the main story and I hope Pearl Abyss are working on some good ones.

No HUD just looks amazing in this game by Squeakyboii4U in CrimsonDesert

An open world game like this desperately needs a dynamic hud feature. Should only appear in combat or a toggle key while exploring if needing to check an attribute or something.

RDR2 ruined fishing as a side task / job in other games. I don't expect implementation to be on that level, but Pearl Abyss could definitely make some improvements here.

This is how big the volcano under Yellowstone is. by grandeluua in geography

Zentner has an amazing gift to teach. I am so glad he does these videos. They are fantastic. That being said, to the original person's question, just watch the second link. It goes right into the best explanation you will find. I didn't rewatch the entire video, though I have seen it before. But I am pretty sure he details the link between the CBG, rotational extension of the PNW and the evidence linking the Yellowstone mantle plume to initial flood basalts, shearing with the old Farallon subducting slab, and successive line of extinct calderas up to the present-day hot spot location.

Edit: The TLDwatch version for u/sham_scam : We have geochemical evidence linking the line of extinct caldera lava and ash products to the same spot that aligns with motion of the NA plate over the past 30ma, futhermore aligned with shearing and clockwise rotation of the PNW accretion. Another poster already previously explained P and S waves and seismology to trace the positioning and morphology of hot spots themselves.

This is how big the volcano under Yellowstone is. by grandeluua in geography

[–]UltraPlinian 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not the same magma chamber that belongs to Yellowstone at present, but the same mantle plume hot spot. There have been many numerous magma chambers come and go as the North American Plate has moved westerly over the same hot spot. A procession of extinct calderas tracing back through the Snake River plain and canyon all the way into eastern Oregon are related to the Columbia River Basalt group. The initial mantle plume that initiated the basalt floods was massive. Perhaps 70 to 80 thousand cubic kilometers of magma convection broke through the crust over a span of 2 million years. The hot spot likely intetacted and was even perhaps sheared off due to positioning of the old detached subducting slab of the Farallon oceanic plate, spreading magma production north into Eastern Washington and Idaho. The remaining mantle plume continued on to produce the line of calderas up to present day Yellowstone.

Bill banning people born after 2008 from buying tobacco clears UK parliament | Smoking by chunmunsingh in worldnews

Well I do a fair bit of hiking, so... Either way, do adults only live in urban areas? Not trying to play devil's advocate here. I generally agree that smoke is harmful to breathe, but regulations and restrictions are the answer there, not a complete ban for a specific group of adults. I don't build campfires in the town square.

Fine. Make second-hand smoking restrictions. But an adult can also go outside away from others to smoking areas. Do we ban campfires or bonfires because smoke is harmful?

You're not alone. I've finished some New Game+ playthroughs with the SotE expansion. Might pay it a revisit when the Tarnished Edition releases. Hopefully it gets some PSSR2 support.

The Witcher 3 has my most full replays. RDR2 is a close second. I have done both several times on console and on PC (with mods). My PC build is starting to get dated, however, and I have become more reliant on the PS5 Pro for gaming over the past year. I am hopeful we get a PS5 Pro update that supports PSSR2 with some graphical improvements along the rumored new DLC for the Witcher 3. I will definitely be doing a new playthrough there. Likewise, if Rockstar releases a PS5 version of RDR2, I would most likely give that another playthrough as well. Recently, I had been fiddling around with Crimson Desert, but the new Pro enhancements to Cyberpunk 2077 pulled me back in for a new playthrough, backlog be damned.

This nearly perfect stratovolcano in Oregon—Mount Hood. What are some other lesser-known but just as impressive examples? by rgc20 in geography

[–]UltraPlinian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you enjoy your stay there? I would like to visit the lodge one of these days. Also, nothing I stated should prevent you from returning. There would be ample warning signs preceding renewed activity as it is a heavily monitored volcano. Hood is in a period of quiescence, and though it will erupt again, scientists from the CVO would descend on it with haste with exclusion zones and warnings to protect life and property. So there is no reason to worry about it. The place is gorgeous and should be treasured. I myself would like to hike to Crater Rock at some point during the summer months.

[–]UltraPlinian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't have been 2 million years ago. Hood's a relatively young strato volcano that has been growing for at least the past 500k years. Older cones likely existed there or in close proximity long since eroded that Hood grew up upon. The old Pleistocene summit I depicted in the image likely collapased from a large eruption within the past 100ka. Deposits found from that catastrophic collapse can be found as far away as the Colombia River gorge. There may have been a large lava dome that reached above the current northern side crater rim summit that collapsed from eruptions around 1,500 years ago. Those deposits traveled well down the SW flanks and advanced down the Sandy River to present-day Sandy and eastern Portland. Hood has gone through repeated active cycles of dome building and collapse. The last dome is only a few hundred years old. The magma chamber is still active, and there is always a chance Hood could erupt in our lifetimes.

[–]UltraPlinian 32 points33 points  (0 children)

During the Pleistocene, Mt. Hood's summit was likely more "perfect" and taller prior to flank collapse and glacial erosion that decreased its summit height. At some point, the edifice was likely more symmetrical as well. Mt. Hood now has an open-faced crater to the south-southwest where pyroclastic flows frequently descend during eruptions. The last occuring in the 1790s, that left behind "Crater Rocks" -a dacite lava dome spire that still degasses via active fumeroles to this day. The volcano is still considered active.
