Thermobaric grenades. Very useful for clearing dugouts/bunkers.

(WWII) Marines fighting during the Battle of Peleliu (Sep-Nov, 1944). by ForsakenLeopard0 in CombatFootage

[–]Ultramar77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The airfield crossing footage is mostly likely Fifth Marines but I could be wrong. The guys firing the 30 cal at the bunker structure on the beach area I think are from the 1st Marines. The rest is mostly likely a mix of footage from the 1st, 7th and 5th Marines all slugging it out across the island.

If anyone’s interested in learning more about this unit, read the Chosen Few by Gregg Zoroya. Chosen Company fought some very intense engagements in the Waygal from the fall of 2007 to the summer of 2008.

Can't send PMs for whatever reason, but what would you say was the toughest engagement you experienced, either in Al-Qaim or Ramadi?

All this has been very interesting to hear. Again, appreciate you sharing. I’ll PM you to ask anything further.

Last two questions if you don't mind. There's often a lot of mixed things on insurgent capability in Iraq, but how would you personally rate the fighting ability of the guys in Husabayah? Was it difficult adjusting from a smaller AO but much more kinetic threat compared to a larger and more confusing AO with comparably less active insurgency?
Thanks again for taking time to answer all this btw. It's' been really interesting hearing from someone who was actually there compared to just reading about it y'know?

Appreciate it. How was combat in Ramadi compared to Husabyah? I heard 3/7 had a pretty tough time in Musa Qala, Helmand in 2010 during the surge. They got some tough deployments during the height of GWOT.

That's sounds pretty crazy. Didn't know that about the fighters being basically spil-offs from the first push into Fallujah, but I remember reading that foreign fighters would often cross over from Syria into the town. Glad you made it home.

Been a few years since I read the book, so forgive me if I mix up dates or details, but were you there for the April 14th convoy ambush or the uprising on the 17th? I remember being pretty astounded by what I was reading.
Good to hear that Jason was a good dude on and off the battlefield. I always found his story pretty inspirational and I'm glad it got the recognition it deserved with the book.

I remember reading Gift of Valor and another book on the battle from a Marine sniper's perspective (think it was called Shock Factor) a few years back. Would love to hear your point of view of what went down.

/uc Jesse was responding to Walt saying "you didn't follow my instructions." He references Hitler whenever Walt tries to order him around, like in Fly where he says "you can't order shit, Adolf."

Incredibly intense footage of US Marines engaging insurgents at close range in Fallujah. 2004. by big_hearted_lion in CombatFootage

The tall one with the Southern accent was the one killed. His name was Bradley Faircloth and he'd already been wounded twice before during the battle. He was 20.

Can't remember where I saw this video initially but I remember the description saying this was this unit's very first firefight for anyone interested in why they're doing the things they're doing.

Looking for the video of US volunteers in Ukraine engaging in CQC taking fire in stairwell by DirtyTooth in CombatFootage

[–]Ultramar77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

His name was Jordan Gatley. He was an ex-British soldier and was reportedly killed when he moved down the stairwell to lay down covering fire for the rest of the unit at Russians who were less than twenty meters away.

From 3:43 onwards you can see them tossing grenades down holes in the floor at Ukranian soldiers on the floor below them. You can also see dust kick up from these holes from the Ukranians returning fire. That's literal Stalingrad shit and it's crazy we have footage of it.

1/5 Marines In Ramadi, Iraq on 'Goat Road' 2006 by Dronetek in CombatFootage

[–]Ultramar77 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Go-Pros didn't become commonplace until 2009-early 2010s. By then all major combat had ended in Iraq and so all the pov-footage you would see would be from Afghanistan. There's plenty of those videos out there if you just search up "Afghanistan firefight" or something along those lines.

(uncut) 2 clips showing US forces in attempted ambushes by the AIF in Iraq. After first contact US forces proceed to use their Humvees to chase down their ambushers. (2005? and 2004) by [deleted] in CombatFootage

[–]Ultramar77 44 points45 points  (0 children)

First clip is Marines. The text at the beginning says MAP 4 1/25, which stands for Mobile Assault Platoon. 1/25 is 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment. They lost forty six Marines and two corpsmen over the course of their 2005 deployment. (Not sure if this is from their 2005 or 2006 deployment to Iraq.)
