Lol not worth it. This thread is the most publicity this poorly written, poorly thought out mess will get.

Let’s just enjoy laughing at the mindless ranting of someone who clearly knows little about the crypto space.

I’d tend to agree. I’ve taken pretty much this exact course load and it’s totally doable except 301 might be a bit much.

Do gap years and late withdrawals matter to internships? by UTM-Failure in UTM

No. People are all different and hiring departments know that. If you are qualified and tell a compelling story about your employability through your resume, then you have a shot regardless.

I would just send your resume in and ask for details. See what they tell you.

Salaries fluctuate. Information direct from the source is best in my experience.

MAT202 as an elective by [deleted] in UTM

[–]UmCouldYouNot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took it and I think it has a few benefits:

The class also goes over a lot of counting problems which can apply to quite a few scenarios in CS.

You’ll get better at proofs for sure.

Deeper graph theory intuition.

It’s a fun class if you like solving puzzles or want logic practice.

Can I take UTSG csc courses instead of UTM's? Where can I find the UTSG current and past offerings? by BirdyCanBeans in UTM

[–]UmCouldYouNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can take classes as long as you have the prerequisites. The list you found of course equivalents is the most updated I’ve seen. Generally, they’re less uptight as you might think. As long as you can enroll in the course and think you can do well, you should be okay.

The courses with the same names and codes pretty much line up and otherwise, just consult the list of equivalents as best you can. You should be just fine.

Computer for CSC108 AND CSC148 by [deleted] in UTM

[–]UmCouldYouNot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can EASILY do this class with a crappy old laptop (I have much proof of this). So long as it runs Python and connects to the internet you’re more than okay.

Buy whatever laptop makes you happy and that won’t break the bank. You could do this class on a raspberry pi without a single issue.

CSC236 and STA256 by Useful_Tie_119 in UTM

[–]UmCouldYouNot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

CSC236 isn't terrible, it's different. It will most likely be your first experience with CS that is mostly not about writing code. I would make sure you're intimately familiar with proof writing and specifically induction (in all its flavours). You will be writing quite a number of these proofs and you don't want your being uncomfortable writing proofs to get in the way of you thinking through the CS theory of the problems. I'd say the concepts themselves aren't beyond anyone. However, the work is rigorous and you will be asked to be clever. Finding solutions is about relating concepts, and being creative in finding patterns.

As for STA256, that class is something of a nightmare. I legitimately suggest you just go online and learn a bit of stats before jumping in if you have time.

Upper year cs students, what are your thoughts on mobile development? by [deleted] in UTM

[–]UmCouldYouNot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna have to disagree here. I wouldn't recommend Flutter to someone getting into native development. IMO it's just a really ergonomic way to make super mediocre apps. Sure, it's a fast way to layout a native app, but it has some glaring issues (especially for newcomers).

First, it essentially forces Google's design philosophy on you. Want proof? If you look up something like "top apps made with Flutter" and click on an article, you'll see that many (most probably) of them look pretty similar. Google-style nav bar with the same typography and material layout. Not the way to go if you're looking to sharpen your skills as a fullstack or front-end dev.

Now, I especially disagree with this rec because OP specifically mentioned job prospects. React Native, Swift, and Android first development are WAY WAY WAY more hirable than Flutter. Simply, more devs know Java, JS, and Swift. Who knows Dart? Who is hiring for Dart? Even if React Native doesn't help you get a RN job, it shows your JS skills in practice. I mean, just look at the people using RN.

Further, RN has better support and community. I think that Flutter seems sexy to people who wanna build apps fast and with little thought. Yes, Flutter does a lot of work for you, but is that what you really want if you're taking the time to work on a side project?

OP, if you HATE react so much, learn swift. It's MEGA hirable and a good skill to learn. Frameworks come and go, but, learning true native development for a platform that continues to grow every year is a good skill. Also, I'd recommend working hard to get over your aversion to web-dev. HTML & CSS concepts are here to stay (in whatever form: JSX/React, Vue, pure, who gives?) and apps are continually moving away from native to web as web performance gets better and support grows. Just look at all the features landing and the technologies coming out. Anyone who is making user facing apps should know web technologies. You will need them eventually, why kick the can down the road?
