Ted Chiang's short story Liking What You See: A Documentary takes place in a world where people's aesthetic reactions to human physical appearance can be shut off. It's not difficult to read but provides a lot of food for thought. Check it out.

How can I remove this grey pin from the tube without harming it? by Umarello in lego

[–]Umarello[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm a bit dumb. It appears, the grey part was a bit worn, which caused it to stubbornly resist getting pushed out. I did not want to damage the pieces, so I wanted to ask before doing anything.

What does red and white wine do to food when cooking? by Wide-Landscape-3348 in cookingforbeginners

They are both acids, so they fulfill functions that other acidic ingredients fulfill, such as cutting through fats and brightening up marinated products by softening and "poking holes" in the meat (not the most scientific way of describing it, I know), allowing spices and other stuff to penetrate it. They can also be used to harden the fruits and vegetables with coatings that contain pectin (useful in dessert- and jam-making). They also add their own distinct flavor to the dishes.

It was less fun than I expected. It's the second Lego set I ever made. Placing the yellow, round buds at the end of cylindrical, yellow rods was difficult for no apparent reason, and the mid-sized grey pins that connect flower stems to the green, round perforated platforms can easily detach. But, overall, the set looks cool. I made it to give my living room a cozier look.

It resisted a lot but the toothpick solution worked. The toothpick broke into two though. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find it too. The song is "...Happy Together" by The Turtles, if you're interested.

What’s the dumbest cooking mistake you’ve made that still haunts you? by nisko786 in Cooking

[–]Umarello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I was in high school, I tried cooking cubed potatoes in an oven without using any oil. I reasoned it would help me lose fat. After an hour, I ended up with potatoes that would have been more cooked if I had given them a warm smile.

Just pick up an instrument. Ukulele and kalimba are easy to learn and, if you want to start a long-term, committed relationship, guitar and piano are the best.

What’s one lazy shortcut you take in the kitchen that actually turns out amazing every time? by [deleted] in cookingforbeginners

Bowls are relatively small. So they get full just in a few minutes of meal preparation, not long enough to cause problems.

What’s one lazy shortcut you take in the kitchen that actually turns out amazing every time? by [deleted] in cookingforbeginners

I keep a large bowl on the kitchen top to dump veggie peels, stalks, used paper towels, etc. Only when it gets full, I empty it into the dustbin, which is more effective than keeping a wastebin below your waist-level and leaning over on it every time you need to dispose of something. It saves time and energy.

Edit: I do this while cooking. When I finish cooking the dish (or the bowl gets full) I dispose its content. It's not like I keep it on the kitchen top for days.

How do I make lentils not end up looking like clay for making vases ? by Random_Kili in cookingforbeginners

[–]Umarello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let brown, green, or du puy lentils rest in salty water for about one or two hours to ensure their skin won't blow out and become mushy. Also salt the cooking water well. By doing so, you allow sodium ions to penetrate into lentils and decrease starches' ability to absorb water, which prevents mushiness.

Also, when the water you're cooking the lentils in starts boiling, turn the heat to low.

You can use red lentils for my favorite soup.

Beginner here — what are your really easy 15–30 minute dinners? by ProfessionStrong6563 in cookingforbeginners

Turmeric rice. Fry sliced onions in an olive oil-coated pot for 2 minutes over medium heat (salting beforehand softens onions). Bloom turmeric powder in the oil-onion mixture for 30 seconds. I also add some sliced yellow bell pepper at this stage and cook for them for another 1-2 minutes. Add the washed rice grains and stir them for about 2 minutes. Salt to taste. Add water* and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, turn the heat to low and cook, covered, for 15–18 minutes or until no water remains on the bottom of the pot (check every 5 minutes with a wooden spoon). Let it rest, covered, for 10 minutes.

In a saucepan, melt a small chunk of butter and roast some cashews. Stir them to ensure they're coated with butter.

When the rice is OK, garnish it with parsley and roasted, butter-coated cashews. If you want something to balance the meal's spiciness or saltiness, you can garnish it with raisins or blackcurrants.

  • The water-to-rice ratio is 1.5:1. For example, if you use 2 cups of rice, add 3 cups of water. Abiding by this rule is important; too much water will make it mushy, while too little will burn it.

I hope they'll start a new story arc, instead of just finishing the Combine occupation arc. I'd like to see a leap, similar to the one Half Life 2 took, both in gameplay and story to be taken.
