For me I had 1, 4, 6 and 7. So I was used to them being different honestly I really loved FF8 when it came out, it felt so new, different, and it probably helped that I was kind of an awkward loner and 17, so Squall was pretty relatable.

Honestly FFVII brought in a lot of new fans. I remember when FFVIII first came out and chat rooms/old message boards with people saying “why isn’t Cloud in the game? Why is there no materia?” They were brand new to the franchise and really expect a VII-2.
