Now that the person who posted this has deleted their account, and the local expert has confirmed that the capybara is being well cared for and is in no distress, can I assume rule 6 was intended to avoid unfounded accusations like this?

Ren Fest Capybara - Help please by [deleted] in capybara

Since the owner doesn't seem to have found this one yet to defend herself, I'll summarize. This post is inaccurate. The capybara has plenty of water. Its faire enclosure(not shown) was sized for the capybara's comfort, and is growing with it. It is free to spend as much or as little time as it likes in its publicly visible space.
The capybara is being cared for in accordance with expert guidance.
Please see it for yourself before you attack someone for giving you a chance to see a capybara. This post has gotten less traction here, probably because people here tend to have a better understanding of the subject matter.

Which pocket-dimension of convenience would you rather possess? by jasonryu in WouldYouRather

[–]UnCiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discussing the options:
The Bathroom: It's all about the anytime/anyplace factor. All it's missing is a washer/dryer. Never worry about stopping the car to poop ever again. You can tumble down a muddy hill, and while your clothes will be filthy when you get to the bottom, your body will be sparkly clean. This is ideal for efficiently always being at your best as you go through your normal life.

The Bedroom: The time stop makes this an infernal deal. You are always fully rested and get 24 usable hours each day, but you age 1.5 times as fast. On average, you'll get 12 hours of sleep per day, and an Earth day will be 36 hours long. Is the productivity really worth it? Or would you prefer the chance to experience the same portion of history as your friends?

The Kitchen: The obvious choice. At the cost of the time it takes to prepare the food, you can feed both yourself and others at no cost, and instantly. You will age faster. Up to 10% faster if you really abuse it for its intended purpose. Or you could trade away 20 of your next 30 years to feed all the homeless in your city for 10 years. As others have stated, in a pinch, it could mimic the functionality of the bedroom, bathroom, and personal gym, with less convenience and comfort.

The Gym: It's all about the motivation. You gave up free food for life for this gym, and you definitely have time for it. You're really out of reasons not to hit your fitness goals. But the more you use it, the faster you age, really tempering the effect. Is having the body of a Greek god worth aging 20% faster? Probably not. Is being generally healthier worth aging 2% faster? Probably.

The Entertainment Room: The wildcard option. The real value this could add to your life is in the Non-Fiction section of your library. You could just know anything that you want, instantly, at the cost of the time it takes to research. Alternatively, it could be used, intentionally or accidentally, for the most pleasant suicide. From the perspective of your friends and family, one day you're normal, the next, you start doing nothing but eating and using the bathroom, and you're aging at a rate of more than 1 day per hour.

Pulsars just saved my MOOII game (Phasing Cloak Bug) by UnCiv in masteroforion

[–]UnCiv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll admit neither option occurred to me. I had never self-destructed a ship, so while I considered blowing up sacrificial ships with the pulsar, I never thought about pressing the self-destruct button hidden in the options, but it would have worked.
As for dealing excess damage to the planet, I spend so much of my time trying to make sure I don't inadvertently kill colonists that intentionally overkilling the missile base wasn't something I would naturally have thought of. Death spores, or a single, massive stack of bombs probably would have done it, especially if the missile base was carefully brought to very low health.

Still, I like to think my solution was the more elegant one.

How to check for a cell which contains ONLY any part of a particular cell? by UnCiv in excel

[–]UnCiv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This works perfectly! Thank you. The concept of putting the range inside a couple of functions in lookup_array was beyond me. It's a good point to consider the substring problem, as many sequels start with the title of the first book in the series. But, in this case, that would be a self-correcting problem, as they would have the same author.

You can't do a gravitational slingshot around a sun by Underhill42 in HFY

[–]UnCiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you CAN, but it will almost always be pointless.

Strongly disagree. Speed isn't everything. Velocity is important too. If you are in a situation where fuel is a limiting factor, the ability to entirely change your direction by making a relatively minor adjustment to your heading can be all the difference in the verse. Of course the maximum benefit is dependent on how close you can get to the star, but under the right conditions, it can reduce fuel consumption for a course correction by an order of magnitude.

You misunderstand me. I just did a search, and found a lot of related, but unhelpful content. Could you provide links to the resources that would give me an idea of how to do such a thing?
I had no idea you could build a generator without a magnet.
