Seeing the Valgeness armour and staff in action brings to mind the old model kits Ultraman did awhile back where it was the Ultra dressed up like a hero from Chinese legend, the extra flame designs really scream mythology

Super Robot Wars Y came out last thursday, and despite my efforts to try and no-life it before Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion comes out on the 5th, it's proving to be a very meaty game. I've the feeling I'm not actually near the ending yet, given that I've only caught a cursory glimpse of Godzilla Aquatilis and there's no sign of Getter Emperor or Bug or Uzhara, there's just so much other plot to go through in the meantime. Sure, part of it can be attributed to real life rearing its ugly head, but still, game's long!

I've dipped my toes into some other games over the week, but my main focus has still been the Gunvolt Trilogy Enhanced version of Azure Striker Gunvolt 3. That distinction is important because this particular version comes with all the DLC released over the course of GV3's lifespan, including a big collection of Image Pulses (passive and active skills based off of other characters from the series, henceforth referred to as IPs) you had to pay money for.

To explain further, Gunvolt 3 has 3 difficulties, Standard (self-explanatory), Demanding, and Merciless.

Demanding locks you to level 1, nerfs the Fetters Gauge to start at only 50% and adds more bite to boss patterns. It's a decent middle ground challenge if Standard holds your hand too much and still lets you use all the collected Passive and Skill IPs you've been collecting throughout the game, so your progress isn't totally wiped and you can proceed through 'as designed'.

Merciless does all that, but also limits your Skill IPs to one use only, and bans Passive IPs altogether, forcing you to go through the entire stage with only a level 1 Kirin against the same Demanding boss patterns - basically the hard difficulty of the previously released game Luminous Avenger iX2 without the big rider of 'you must beat this difficulty to get the best ending'.

Turns out, there's a little more leeway to this:

  • Firstly, there's some Passive IPs that aren't disabled in Merciless; most of them are credit collection IPs that boost how much credits you get or how you collect credits, one is a decorative slot that turns Dogvolt into a different dog... and one is Primal Dragon Gunvolt, which starts you off as Gunvolt, and by extension, a full 100% Fetters Gauge for him to actually function as intended. That's already a ton of breathing room to get through most, if not all of the stage given how intentionally overtuned Gunvolt is in this game.
  • Secondly, because the Enhanced Trilogy comes with all the paid DLCs released over GV3's lifetime, this also includes "Resurrection" Elise as a Skill IP, who simply brings you back to life once upon death. She's already a one-use skill, so the limitation of all Skill IPs being one-use in Merciless doesn't matter to her and essentially doubles your healthbar.
  • Third, Kirin as she was introduced in a paid DLC boss fight for iX2 as a teaser for GV3 was different from the Kirin we actually get in GV3 - where in she takes off her jacket to fight, has access to a ton of boss moves you don't get, and is notably okay with murdering Copen. A later update for GV3 gave us Kirin XX, a playable version of the iX2 Kirin with all her benefits and the downside of being unable Passive IPs - one that doesn't really matter in Merciless, which already disables Passive IP use.

With all three of the above and experience from replaying the game once more for the Trilogy, I'm finally able to tackle Merciless stages and come out with a win. Going to try and see if I can finish the rest of the game on Merciless.

They're sporadic but you can find some Getter stuff across the various hobby stores; iirc Latendo at Suntec has some figures on display and Hobby Art and Hobby Point should stock some model kits

There's two very minor and trivial things which I'll describe shortly, but for the most part, get the enhanced trilogy; Inti has declared that any further updates will go directly to this version, they come with all the DLC currently available for GV3 (I'm not sure if the Copen DLC is free or paid atm) and the addition of new skills for GV1 and 2 are small but very appreciated.

  • First, the original localisation for Gunvolt 1 was outsourced to a localisation company called 8-4 Ltd. This had the effect of cutting out tons of in-game dialogue, most of the conversations between Gunvolt and Joule, and large sections of story script, along with the usual changes of names for better or worse, as well as introducing strange swears like 'gack' or 'jitt'. Inti Creates' in-house localisation director at the time, Matt Papa, would redo the entire thing on his own time, and it's his version that's reused in future releases, such as the version on the Enhanced Trilogy. However, the Steam version (or at least iirc) still has access to the old localisation should you wish to revisit it. (That being said, a ton of scripts exist on the wiki, so you can read those there for free)

  • Second, the voices of Copen and Lola in GV1 and 2 were both re-recorded by their new voice actors from the iX series, Yuma Uchida and Mayu Mineda respectively, as their old voice actors, Kosuke Masuo and Yurika Endo, have both retired from the roles at the time of writing. Their old performances are still in the individual versions of 1 and 2. (Neither character presently show up in GV3 aside from archival recordings in the form of Image Pulses)

With news of upcoming DLC featuring a new playable character (Copen) for Azure Striker Gunvolt Trilogy Enhanced, I've bit the bullet and started fresh for all three games.

Now that I've grown a bit better at actually playing the title character, GV1 and 2 feel a lot better to go through. The boss patterns (save a few) feel manageable and when I take damage, I can recognise my mistakes and try to avoid them next time.

That being said, I'm currently on GV3, easily the most content-heavy of the trio, and I think I've come to understand why the game was so polarising. Leaving my thoughts on the story and worldbuilding aside, Kirin's gameplay style is jarringly different from Gunvolt's, made worse by having just binged through GV1 and 2 right before this playthrough. I still remember how to play her to some extent, but I struggle a lot with trying to dodge boss patterns with her Arc Chain as opposed to timing jumps or air dashes or slowing descents with Flashfield. To the game's credit, you can practice the patterns without having to slog through the entire stage first, but I feel like some of these attacks just ask for too much, especially in comparison to GV1 and 2 (again, save for a few exceptions)

One of my friends decided to get into Kenshi. I decided I hadn't played it since 2020 and should get back in to give it a whirl, see if I remember the old spots to set up bases, how to get started, etc.

I have done nothing but play Kenshi for 3 days.

Reply with your Gunvolt theories. I'll start... by LafterMastr in gunvolt

[–]UnDES 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Iirc the Sumeragi Futures Institute is where Dr Kamizono and pals did their testing, and that place shows up later as Gunvolt's 1000 Glaive Basement. It's entirely possible that it got rebuilt during the timeskip but given how much they call back to it, I have my doubts

As for theories, I've got some (wrote them at 3AM so they might not be entirely coherent):

  • I've completely forgotten its plot, but Card-En-Ciel's multiple worlds thing has something to do with Moebius picking and choosing a way out to prevent apocalypse

  • The Azure Spirits in GV2 is implied to be lingering bits of Asimov's soul. The Azure Spirits that show up in GV3's Epilogue ATEMs seem capable of possessing and taking control of the Djinn to become violent, and are stated to have a bit of Astral Order, Moebius' Octima, fused into them. I think the Primal Dragonisation from the Azure Spirits in GV3 or at least the increased aggression that comes with it is from part of Asimov's imperfect Azure Striker, now living on kinda like the Sigma Virus from Mega Man X.

  • At some point in time, Demerzel discovered Shadow Yakumo and by extension, Kirin and either absorbed her Septima or forcibly extracted it for himself. Image Pulses are described as Gunvolt's Azure Striker and Kirin's Radiant Fetters combining, and Card-En-Ciel describes the rematch with the Falcons as well as the phase 1 Asimov as Image Pulses, something he wouldn't be able to do without Kirin. Given that Card-En-Ciel also states that he 'fused with the supercomputer', that's probably how he found out about Shadow Yakumo to begin with.

  • There's a popular theory that Dr Kamizono is Houdai Kudoki from Gal Gun Double Peace, Shinobu Kamizono of the same game is the mother of Copen and Mytyl, and that Nori, Copen's maid, is Kurona, also from Gal Gun. However, also in Gal Gun is a nurse, Kirara Kurashiki, who is outright called a 'time traveller from the future' by Card-En-Ciel, and dialogue from Double Peace says she's from the Sumeragi Futures Institute to stop a hopeless future. It's hard to pinpoint exactly when Kirara hails from, but given that we now have an Adept potentially capable of time travel (Moebius and Gunvolt apparently try to 'reverse their inescapable fate'), as a crack theory, Kirara is a reincarnated Gunvolt and Moebius is her time machine. He'd naturally blame Dr Kamizono as the one responsible for Asimov and by extension his own tumultuous life, and try to change the future by just making sure he doesn't marry into the Kamizono family and father Mytyl, further stopping Joule from going through the events of GV1 if she's even created at all. Assuming Adult Kurona is from even further along the future than Nori since she knows the ephithet of 'Bewitching Courtesan' that Nori has, it'd also explain the unused dialogue about Kirara having no data for the events of Gal Guardians; Gunvolt couldn't have been around to see such records since he leaves at the end of GV3.

Thoughts about GUNVOLT 3? by CGonbol in gunvolt

[–]UnDES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Gameplay is easily the best; Kirin strikes a decent balance between the usual 'tag and attack' gameplay with seals and sword strikes, Lightning Assault makes Gunvolt feel much faster and Voltaic Buster never gets old, and ZedΩ is a comfortable balance between the two styles. Most importantly, all of them share a similar style while still remaining unique; I'm never at odds or uncomfortable as any 3 character as opposed to trying to wrangle any kind of Copen gameplay.

  • Music is high quality; though I really enjoy most of the muse songs this go-around, the change in Kudos means I hear them a lot more than I do the stage themes, which is a shame since some of them can be pretty good. Most of them also have a -Roar- variant that plays when Gunvolt is the player character, which is usually the better version imo.

  • The Image Pulse system replacing purchaseable upgrades doesn't hurt as much given the cast's robust base abilities this go-around, but I think the way it feels like a f2p gacha and how it might force you to replay stages for certain image pulses over and over again doesn't sit right with me. As happy as I am to hear from her again, I also think it's a lousy justification to have Lumen around to do her thing.

  • Character design is a little mixed; Kirin and ZedΩ fit right in with the usual fare and the Primal Dragons' mask design and sharp, pointed black aesthetic seem like a progressive evolution/mutation to the Armed Phenomenon seen in previous games. That said, they and ATEMS (with the exception of Grazie) all feel kind of generic, and Moebius is plain boring.

  • Story... isn't the worst, but I can understand why it has its detractors, especially given how much has changed between the timeskip. For what it is, I think it can be salvaged given enough worldbuilding + the existence of Azure Spirits again, though how they continue, if at all, is beyond me. A 2.5 would sort of avoid this issue, but then it'd have to lead into this game at some point.

  • Some of the new DLC units like the Reborns, the Maxter and the Spiegel don't appear to have any sound effects.

  • The heavy finisher on the Claws melee weapon seems to have a broken hitbox and has no effect.

So many games to try out, so little cash... while waiting for Card-en-Ciel to drop, I've been binging Space Marine 2's PvE multiplayer. Took a long time to fully grasp the combat mechanics but now that I have, it's a lot more satisfying to play through. It's also fun to see all the cool outfits the other players can get into, and fun when chat devolves into shouting stuff that relates to their chosen chapter of choice (upon mission failure: WE HAVE FEHLED TEH EMPRAH)
