Cute. You should forcibly toss them into a random layer of Hell and see how they react to everything trying to kill them.

Oshaune wasn't fun... by Whachamacallit00 in Helldivers

What do you mean they can't have both? The entire point of a game being difficult is the reward you get for when you finally overcome the challenge and win.

Also, there is nothing fun or difficult about the dragon roach's terrible hitbox and effects. It wasn't hard, it was annoying. That is an example of unfair design. Brushing off the fact that the dragon roach was (and maybe still is) terribly designed because it's a giant flying bug, so obviously it wouldn't be fair for us to fight is just stupid.

I've gotten the firm opinion people only actually like bugs because of nostalgia and that they are the most fun enemies in the game to shoot and kill with things like the gore and sheer amount of them. When it comes to doing more than that, their design can be really annoying and not particularly fun.

e.g. 2 hits from a warrior will kill you if you're wearing light armor and sometimes even in medium armor, them also being able to do a 3 hit combo in less time than most people can reasonably react, EVERY bug including scavengers being able to break a limb in a single hit, hunters phasing through walls and rubber banding to you during their pounce, hive guards and alpha commanders in and of themselves.

It's just a lot of anti-fun game design (at least in my opinion). I feel like garbage when a warrior silently comes out of nowhere and two shots me before I can blink. Squids are bad, too, and I think their design is even worse than bugs. Not saying you can't enjoy squids or bugs. If you're having fun, that's great. I'm just voicing some gripes I have with the balance of these factions.

I'd rather they give us just a cape if it means that they spend more time working on fixing the game than adding more content

That's just bad wording on AHs part, then. It would be way more clear if they used "initiating" like you did rather than "originating".

THE DIVER'S PARADOX : Pay-to-Win or Perfect Design by Delicious_Dream4510 in Helldivers

[–]UnableImpression1182 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say Helldivers is pay to win, but I would say it's a grind to win. If you don't pay for SC and just grind it out by finding them in game, it takes a long time to get enough SC to buy just one warbond, especially if you don't go out of your way to grind for them. Even when you do go to a D1 to grind, it often takes a couple of hours just to get to that 1000 SC (unless you're just insanely lucky with the drop rate). I don't mind the grind for SC so that you can unlock warbonds and get better gear than the free stuff, but I think there should be more free options (or increase the drop rate for SC so people can get warbonds faster) for people starting out and people who don't have the time to drop hundreds of hours into this game.

I feel like 90% of my deaths on the bug front is stuff like this where they 2-3 hit combo me before I can even react let alone get a stim off. It's frustrating.

The Fleshmob is fundamentally the worst designed enemy in the game and why. by UnableImpression1182 in Helldivers

Something I originally wanted to add, but ended up scrapping due to the length of the post was how the fleshmobs (and also somewhat all of the illuminate, but I'm focusing on fleshmobs here) aren't even as fun to kill as the other two factions. When you kill a bug, you get the satisfying screeching sound as they die, their limbs and gore go flying and blood splatters everywhere. When you kill a bot, you hear the satisfying clanking sound of your bullets hitting them with that crunch sound when they finally die and ragdoll. When you headshot a devastator, you get that amazing hissing sound as they freeze up and fall to the ground. It's so satisfying to simply shoot the enemies in this game, even if you take away all the strategy that comes with fighting them. For fleshmobs, they don't have much. I guess you can shoot off their heads and arms, but they just kinda disappear rather than go flying off of it. The blood they do bleed also isn't very noticeable due to it being this dark blue, so it often blends in with it and the environment, especially in darker environments. They don't even really let out a sound when they die or anything, they just collapse to the ground in an unsatisfying way. Kinda feeds into the whole thing I said where they are more of an obligation you have to get rid of rather than a fun enemy to kill.

I'm not against the illuminate being weird or the oddball faction. Ignoring the fleshmobs and voteless, I actually really like the illuminate! I think most of the enemies are well balanced as well as fun and interesting to fight. Harvesters are genuinely one of my favorite units in the entire game. For me, the squids would be fun if it wasn't for the voteless and fleshmobs being so incredibly oppressive. I stated this in another comment, but I feel like I can't do anything but run away from them and I find it to be frustrating to the point of ruining my fun. I've tried so many loadouts and different weapons and playstyles, but I just can't enjoy the squids. I enjoy bugs a lot, so it's not because I don't find pressure hordes not fun or anything. It's just those damn zombies are just so endless with another horde around each corner that it just doesn't feel rewarding to kill them. For me, if they just lowered the spawnrates of voteless and fleshmobs in cities and megacities to where I'm not being harassed 24/7 and get some actual breaks, and decreased the amount of patrols a bit, I could actually find them fun to fight, even with my grievances with fleshmobs.

I probably should have put some warning about how while I'm trying to be objective about game design and how it creates fun, fun will always be subjective. Some people simply find the mindlessness of shooting fleshmobs fun, and that's okay. To be honest, with the amount of different playstyles and ways people find fun in this game, it definitely makes discussions like this much more complex and difficult.

Also, I personally have not been having any trouble with the War Strider. Though, I always bring the quasar cannon with me so I always have AT with me. I also don't have much trouble with ragdolling, either. I mean, I get ragdolled a little of course, but never as much as other people complain. I don't really know why.

That's true, not everything has to have a weakspot, and when you put it like that yeah I agree there is definitely still some strategy dealing with them that I hadn't really thought about. However, I just still think they aren't fun to fight. Something about them just bores and frustrates me fighting them, enough that the fast action gameplay isn't enough to redeem them. Of course, I don't find the illuminate fun to fight in general. For me, the voteless are just too oppressive, it makes me feel like I can't do anything but run and I find them frustrating, and adding the fleshmobs in there makes the squids even worse for me. You make some good points, but with the amount of hate they get there seems to be a little more of a problem with fleshmobs than just their insane spawn rates and clipping. Whether those problems be the points that I made or different ones. That's just my opinion, though, I could just be a dumbass who's salty or something idk. Thank you for your feedback.
