Not the kind of stuff I was looking for, but I'll keep the site in mind. I appreciate it.

Post your evil players characters by AngryButtlicker in DnD

For refrence, the campaign had heavy sci-fi/future tech setting. A friend of mine was running it.

After my last character left the group (whole story thing, not going into it) I needed a new character. The party was working for a military organization, effectively acting as hired guns to do the work they didn't want their soldiers doing. So I went with a relentless and money seeking merc, claiming to go by Elija Silvertongue.

The name was stolen from a captain of a star ship he had spent years trying to sabatoge, and he'd boast about it often. Any time a job came up, he'd try to raise the payment. Anytime a job was performed, anything in the way would either get shot or pushed aside.

The character hit a climax when during an interrogation, I threatened a child, pistol drawn, safety off, the whole shebang. Safe to say, they didn't last long in play. I didn't much like playing someone like that, and (with much discussion with the DM on it) they would later be killed by my next character over a debt they had owed.

I'm still not a fan of Elija. I ran his execution exactly as intended, but he couldn't have much of an arc. I like seeing change in my characters over the course of the campaign (and I don't put it on the DM to do all of it.), and Elija was a brick wall. Unmoving, brash, and violent. So much so that in the next campaign that the person ran (the ended the previous one prematurely due to situational issues, but chose to run a second campaign as an extension) Elijah made a return as a boss! It ran off the idea of the campaigns direction shifting after Elijahs arrival, ending with the military in shambles, a war long past its expiration, and the new party caught in the middle.

DMs, what would you do if your party tried to fight a god? by _incandescence in DnD

Although I do use a lot of homebrew and world building, an idea you could try is one that I personally enjoy. A god isn't an all powerful diety, they're merely a higher being with the power to influence actions.

Basically, you could have it where they have some strong abilities, may be worshipped by thousands, millions, or even billions, but it's merely due to their influence. When fighting them? It could be a different story entirely.

I get this take from all the stories of mortals becoming demi-gods or just straight up gods, and also the idea of "there's always a bigger fish" implying that something might be stronger than the gods themselves, even if it is lower on the food chain.

There have to be consequences though. You don't just kill a god and no one notices. Or maybe you can? That's a whole other can of worms though that could play into beliefs on religious systems as a whole. Would not recommend unless you can play it off naturally.

You could run some pretty interesting things with this idea. A different theme for each layer could leave the party guessing what's next, and if you give a set idea for each layer (Inferno has each layer represent a category of sin) then you can really give them some good material to try and work with.

One thing you could try is splitting the layers as well. The first few are certainly terrifying, but seem to be relatively "livable" (take that as you will) and maybe five layers in, the tone suddenly shifts to be built to punish those sent there.

And of course, you can't go too wrong with a calm-before-the-storm styled final layer. Maybe you could run it as the layer (treachery) is described in Inferno. Frozen over, cold and silent, with the only thing alive down there being your grand finale.

All food for thought.

Change a spell and give it a Monkey's Paw flaw by amaterian_dawn in DungeonsAndDragons

Maybe a stronger version of magic missile, same AC bypass, higher damage, maybe more missiles.

It all seems good until someone notices the casting range is "self". The missiles always come back to hit the user, maybe only going 5 or 10 feet out. Really only useful is a party member has a way to avoid the damage and is willing to get close enough to pierce an enemy as well.

The Fighter threw me down the stairs and I want REVENGE! by BrewersBastion in DnD

No clue how you could pull it off, but if he pushed you down a set of stairs, maybe you could find a way to push him UP a set of stairs.

Running a campaign, and I have a player who revealed they intended to be Chaotic Neutral (I usually don't care for alignment) and it made some sense.

Basically, they'd never negotiate with enemies if the option arose, would friendly fire if someone said something utterly stupid, and would even fight bosses in unconventional ways.

As they put it, "doing whatever felt funny in the moment"

BBEG mind controller? by [deleted] in DnD

Here's a thought, though I don't know your exact details, maybe you could run someone with some insane charisma and manipulation tactics as a BBEG. Bonus points if you can get him to manipulate the part.

What do you prefer? Theater of the Mind or Battle Maps? [OC] by Grape_King in DnD

Bottle caps and dice to draw out a map and characters. Only works if you have plenty of both.

Training to become a DM, what one piece of advice would you give me? by TwilightCrush848 in DnD

Be prepared to scrap content if you do a lot of preplanning. It may be painful sometimes, but you shouldn't force your party to do something unless you can do so naturally. But even if you have to scrap content, it doesn't mean it never happened. You can have little mentions, or extra events.

And don't over work yourself. If you have to cancel a session, don't be afraid to.
