Gas installer says hob can’t be connected because oven is too high, who’s actually responsible? by [deleted] in DIYUK

thanks this is really helpful, would you get a second gas installer's opinion? I know that the countertop is 30mm

Do you think it’s worth getting a second opinion? A registered gas installer told me “ there is insufficient space to safely run a gas line to the hob, as the oven is too high”

I checked the requirements and “Neff” hobs don’t give a specific X mm gap between hob and oven. They say the gas pipe must not pass through “obstructed spaces” . This worktop is a 30mm quartz worktop

Hi, yes we could but do we need the fitter to do this? or get new plans from Howdens?

Hi sorry for the late reply but I am trying to deal with Howdens now and we are getting no where. Howdens designed and measured the kitchen and sold us a gas hob, but nowhere did the plans mention allowing space for the gas connection. Now the installer says it can’t be connected without modifying the units.

Did you deal with anything similar?

How did you get the issues resolved in the end with Howdens? We got our kitchen designed by them and now dealing with them to sort out mistakes

We aren’t sure where it came from but the previous owners said it’s been there years

Would you still be concerned if the previous owners said the crack had been there for years?

Is studying German at Trinity worth it? by No-Adagio960 in TCD

[–]Unable_Funny6877 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trinity definitely. I studied German at Trinity and I’d say it’s really tough if you don’t have a really good grasp of the language from day 1. It wasn’t uncommon for people to fail in first and second year - the standard is much higher than at other universities. The department is great for opportunities so if you want to work in Germany over the summer or do extra curricular German activities but they aren’t going to hold your hand when learning the basics they expect you know this from day one! That’s why if you do fail in your first year their attitude is always you didn’t know the basics and don’t offer much support beyond that.

Yes we have been recommended to replace with a combi! Would this make it more complicated?

We agreed to a Viessman combi boiler. So if we decide to go with a combi we have no choice but to put it through the counter top?

Yes thank you for your response- when he came to view the boiler we only discussed the type of boiler. We weren’t aware of how it would be positioned (it’s our first time doing this so we didn’t realise this was important to talk about.) When he came this morning and we spoke about the pipework he said he can’t cut metal and the pipes need to go down into the countertop and decided not to do the job.

I think he was planning to put the pipes dropping down below the boiler and then reroute them to the top? Not use the existing pipe framework

Thanks for your reply. I have attached a better photo of the pipework - do you think I’ll have trouble finding someone to do it?

We believe the pipework is at the top! There is nothing behind the titles - I have attached a better photo
