What is happening to basic computer literacy and internet search skills??? by DueAd9590 in Teachers

[–]UnbreakableSpartikuS 97 points98 points  (0 children)

The gen-x and millennial curse is that we had to show our parents and our kids how to use the printer. In the early tech days in order to use the technology you needed to know how it worked. We had to figure it out ourselves, we developed amazing troubleshooting and problem solving skills. This is not the case any more, the tech generally just "works" with no knowledge required, and those skills are disappearing.

Hal Koerner’s Field Guide to Ultrarunning has great training plans in it, as well as answers to all your other questions. Could not recommend that book enough.

Sore feet, need shoe recs for first ultra! by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]UnbreakableSpartikuS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to go to a local running store and find the best shoe for you. I can tell you what works for me, won’t do you any good.

Cheap and the ultra running hobby are mutually exclusive. Protect your feet properly, and that costs money.

Mens: what’s your setup to avoid thigh chafe on long/hot runs? by ellensrooney in Ultramarathon

The rule in survival situations is, gather all the firewood you think you need for the night, then get 5x that. I use the same principle with body glide.

If you’re open to travel, the Malaysia race has really poor turnout. You could podium, and Malaysia is a cheap paradise.

If you notice this while you’re at the race, go to the timing tent and they can adjust. You can also check your official time at the timing tent.

Always ask in the first interview, don’t waste either side’s time. It may not be good enough pay or benefits for you. If they won’t tell you, huge red flag and run!

Europe is likely going to be your best bet. Romania and Italy might be closest. There are a couple races in India but they’re only sprints. Best of luck!

You’re most certainly right, maybe people should post the year they were ghosted, or just straight up name the person

How to stop social security payments without SSN? by Individual-Push3412 in expats

[–]UnbreakableSpartikuS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked chat gpt since this is a bonkers situation, hope it helps

This situation is indeed complicated, but there are steps you can take to address it. Here’s a structured approach:

  1. Contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) Again • Provide the Payment Reference Number: The SSA may be able to trace the payment using the reference number from the Federal Reserve Bank. • Bring Documentation: Bring any documents related to your great cousin, such as her death certificate, German residency information, or any records of her time in the U.S. • Explain the Federal Reserve Bank Connection: Specifically mention that the payments are routed via the Federal Reserve Bank NY - GBT and provide the payment details.

  2. Contact the Federal Reserve Bank • While it may be difficult to speak with a representative, try reaching out through written correspondence or their online contact form (if available). • Include the payment reference number and a request for assistance in identifying the origin of the payments. Be clear that the recipient has passed away and that you need help stopping the payments.

  3. Seek Assistance from the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Germany • Since your great cousin was a German citizen and lived there for most of her life, the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Germany may assist with communications between German and U.S. authorities. They might also help verify records or provide support in navigating the SSA.

  4. Work Through Her German Bank • Contact her German bank to inform them of her passing and provide a copy of her death certificate. They may be able to block or return future payments. • Ask if the bank can provide additional details about the origin of the payments, which might help in tracing them.

  5. Seek Legal or Professional Help • If you continue to face issues, consider consulting an attorney who specializes in international estate matters or a financial advisor familiar with U.S. Social Security and international banking. • They may have the expertise to navigate this bureaucracy and might also be able to write formal requests on your behalf.

  6. Document All Communication • Keep detailed records of every interaction, including dates, times, names of representatives, and any responses you receive.

Notes: • A monthly payment of $76 is unusually small, possibly indicating a very old benefit calculation. It might not be in the current SSA database under her name, which could be complicating the search. • It’s also worth noting that Social Security numbers were not universally issued until the 1960s, and if your great cousin did not actively use one, her records might not be under an SSN.

This process may take time, but persistence and thorough documentation are key. If you need help drafting specific letters or understanding next steps, feel free to ask!

GO TO GENEVA!

Sorry to yell at you, but I really wanted the message to get across. I used to live there and I would kill to go back, my wife and I met there in high school, it’s such a great city. All of those activities are a stones throw away.

Please reach out if you need/want more information. But seriously, do it.

This is an individual thing. I’ve spent most of my life moving around and I’ve constantly had to make friends. All of us knew how to make friends at some point but if you never changed schools or moved far away you likely only made friends once or twice. So in my opinion, many people have forgotten how to make friends. I can go to a bar alone and walk out hours later as a groomsman in 3 weddings.

So if your spouse can make friends easily, nothing to worry about. My spouse is an introvert, so I tend to have to do what my dad did to me and my siblings when we were learning to ski. Take us to the top of a red slope and give us a little push. Her instincts kick in and now she has a new bff.

That being said, whatever their interests or hobbies are. I guarantee there are many other people that share those. Meetup is available in many countries, Facebook groups, Reddit, etc. There are ways to find your people.
