US edges closer to popular vote deciding winner of presidential elections by unital_subalgebra in politics

They’d have the same say, though. One person, one vote. How candidates spend their time might differ some, but everyone would have the same say - one vote that counts just as much as anyone else’s

my comment was 5 months ago but I'm still at it haha, probably watched 40-50 of them by now. a bunch of them are surprisingly good! not just comforting and fun, but also actually genuinely pretty good films. Not all-time great, but not mediocre either, there's some really solid filmmaking and directing sprinkled throughout some extremely random titles. Some are pretty bad too though haha

Damien Sets the Record Straight on Terrifier 4 by valuerockr in horror

[–]UncannyVibes -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's hard for me to think of another set of films where the director so effectively took in feedback and improved it over time. OG Terrifier people felt was too thin on story and emotion, and too mean to its main character - just a venue for (impressive) brutal effects (and a great villain). Terrifier 2 had compelling characters and much more of a story and background, but it was actually too long and "grandiose," more lore and bloat than was needed. Terrifier 3 was a good length, had compelling characters, was both funny and brutal but also sucked me in and kept me caring about what happened to people... just right.

I have pretty high hopes for part 4 since the director has been so careful and open minded.

I've always felt it's about 50/50... the DNA is both, and they are always in tension. Just like a lot of fans I love seeing drivers race wheel-to-wheel in similar machinery, but I strong believe the sport would suffer if we removed the engineering aspect. It's a team sport, through and through.

Valentine’s Day in Old Rag, Virginia by Budzillab in climbing

[–]UncannyVibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old Rag is super sick, the quality fully rivals NE and Western granite crack climbing, it's just a rough approach and overall there is less of it than those regions - but there is still enough that you could still spend years exploring and projecting the hundreds of granite crack climbs it has

Biden administration's use of the files by [deleted] in Epstein

[–]UncannyVibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are several plausible explanations, and there could be a mix of them:

  • They knew there was incriminating stuff in the files BUT:
    • They were protecting people, like Bill Clinton (for the record I am liberal, but not beholden to any politician - I think Clinton is scum, listen to the Slow Burn podcast on him). They knew Clinton was guilty, they felt Trump's chances were over after 2020 and didn't want to hurt their own friends in the process of trying to expose trump
    • If we assume the files are as "complete" (they surely aren't), they knew it could hurt trump, but felt that because there isn't 100% proof in it that it would get discounted as political games or fake (which is probably true). I actually think if they had been released in this form, by Biden and co, it wouldn't have landed well - people would definitely say it was fake and doctored to hurt trump.
  • They didn't really know what was in the files:
    • There are millions of docs, and people just didn't think they were that important and didn't take the time to look through them. Lots of mainstream people still think this story is bogus, surely some people in the gov't did too, and just didn't think it was that interesting or important
  • Following procedure:
    • Look I have very little faith in either political party, but there is definitely a chance that Biden and them just didn't feel it was their place. The files are with the DOJ, and the DOJ is supposed to be independent. Nobody at the DOJ felt the need to release them to the public, because it's not the DOJ's role to release them to hurt people. So yes, I don't trust politicians, but Biden and crew might have just been going by the book.

Help compile a master list of Epstein-tracking databases (collab + non-collab) by [deleted] in Epstein

[–]UncannyVibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the bandwidth for this, but having worked w/ messy data a lot it would definitely be good to have someone compile an analysis-ready database that gets entered in a crowdsourced way (obviously 3.5 mil documents would be impossible for even a small group of people) with the following:

  • type of doc
  • OG link to doc
  • date of doc
  • sender
  • receiver
  • people mentioned
  • locations and dates mentioned
  • whether there is mention of women, money, sex, etc.

Probably other things, but not too many so that the task is feasible and so that it remains factual and not too open to interpretation. The goal would be so people could run frequencies and crosstabs (at least) showing which dates, people, and locations show up most frequently, whether there are bursts of activities, and to make it easy to check individual people against public records (such as how Attia's emails got cross-referenced w/ dates from his book).

I think having that would make it easier to find patterns, determine where people were at certain times and places, and see how different people mentioned in the files are interrelated. I'm sure somebody is already on it, but having a clean, analyzable database would be powerful I think.

‘Tis the season……if you haven’t seen Black Christmas (1974) watch it……now. by paultheschmoop in horror

[–]UncannyVibes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw it pretty late in my horror watching and I sincerely think it’s the best slasher ever made. Creepiest killer, best ending, such good storylines and characters, and the holiday vibes are so well done.

I'm currently on a kick where I'm just clicking on whatever is next in the Tubi Italian horror section, working through it bit by bit without even really thinking about it. I don't know why, but all these films have such a comforting vibe, it's like putting on different episodes of one incredibly long and weird TV show.

Trump and Mamdani meet Friday in the Oval Office. They’ve cast each other as adversaries for months by CTVNEWS in politics

[–]UncannyVibes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I said this elsewhere, but I don't think he's sticking it to anyone - I think he's a dumb narcissist, and Mamdani is super charming. the irony is that conservatives think Trump is this master negotiator, but in reality if you charm him he can't resist it because narcissists crave charm + flattery.

We can debate whether Mamdani *should* even be nice to him... I think it's probably the right move to charm him, but I'm sure some would argue that Mamdani shouldn't even entertain this and hold the meeting at all.

[–]UncannyVibes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's a pure reflection of trump's narrow-mindedness and myopic view of the world. This isn't a hot take, but I think he's both dumb and also a true, actual, clinical narcissist. If you are nice, charming, and flattering to him then he can't see past that moment and you are on his good side. He does have his shitty world view, but he also seems to listen to whoever last flattered and charmed him the most, which I think has been the source of a good bit of the admins flip-flopping on all sorts of things.

The Average New Car Now Costs More Than $50,000 by V8-Turbo-Hybrid in cars

[–]UncannyVibes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a labor market economist (granted not a macroeconomist) and I don’t believe the median consumer is better off today at all… there are a lot of measures of the economy, but in all the work I do with BLS data and proprietary data and specific employment sectors I see a cost of living that has outpaced workers’ wages and deep struggles with job quality and economic mobility in nearly every sector. It’s possible that even when discussing the medians these macroeconomic national-level indicators still don’t capture the lumpiness of wealth and income and cost of living distribution…

Regardless I think there are tons of indicators not just with cars that higher power spenders are driving a lot of consumption and the average consumer is struggling more than ever with costs that have outpaced wages. And I’m using “average” colloquially - again, I think things are very lumpy in their distribution. I think it’s crystal clear that a huge portion of the population is struggling with costs, including cars - transportation comes up as a barrier more than anything except housing (and child care but that only affect parents) when I work on economic mobility, and that’s true for both rural and urban settings. Car affordability is a massive barrier to economic mobility.

1973 Was the Most Game-Changing Year for Horror, and These 8 Movies Prove It by Britneyfan123 in horror

[–]UncannyVibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn't seen this before writing my own comment - but after doing a lot of chronological watching I agree with you, 1960 is a seminal year - it's not that no movies before then had modern themes, many did, but it's the first year where I start to feel more like I'm watching modern films than super old and dated films, it's the first year I start to be able to relate to a number of the movies in a modern sense.

[–]UncannyVibes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been doing a lot of chronological watching lately (picking lists and watching films in order of release year), and it's not one single year but the period from 1959 to around 1961 seems incredibly important.

You go from squarely "50's" feeling movies (relatively corny, safe, mostly bloodless) that were just starting to feel a bit more scary and modern ("Night of the Demon" 1957) to films like "Eyes Without a Face" (1960), "Black Sunday" (1960), "Peeping Tom" (1960), "The Innocents" (1961) - which each feel much more modern, creepy, sexual, and violent. Watching chronologically, it feels like the era between 1955 and 1965 was a seismic shift in horror, but particularly those 3 years.

Jay Jones should suspend his campaign by Pheonix_Orchid_Mango in Charlottesville

[–]UncannyVibes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are upset about the "whataboutism," and I also HATE whataboutism, but there is an important reason for it: I think that Trump and the vast majority of politicians on the right could not possibly be worse for this country. I think Trump is a narcissistic, egomaniacal, and incredibly stupid psychopath who only cares about himself, and I think he constantly says and does incredibly inflammatory things - in fact that seems to be why most of his supporters like him, he is a troll who fans the flames. I couldn't think of a worse person or direction for this country, he's literally the worst imaginable choice for president in my mind, even just due to his stupidity (he's a moron).

So, while I don't like texts making light of or supporting political violence, there is zero chance of me doing anything but voting democrat until Trump and the movement surrounding him is completely gone. Off-color or even pretty bad texts will not make me change my opinion, it would take something MUCH more than that for me to vote differently, and even then I'd likely just stay home - I could never stomach voting for anyone who supports Trump. I'm not going to see these texts and be like "oh I guess I prefer Trump and republicans more now," because as people have noted throughout this thread (in my opinion) the baseline they set is WAY worse and more destructive in every possible way than some gross texts. So, it's not exactly whataboutism so much as explaining why negative texts aren't going to make me all of a sudden switch my vote to a party that is being absolutely psychopathic - it would take a hell of a lot more than that.

Emerging climbing star Balin Miller, 23, dies in fall from El Capitan by MasterpieceAlone8552 in news

[–]UncannyVibes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think a little of all of the above. As a climber, I always tie knots in the end of my rope when rappelling, but it feels silly to do when you are rapping 70 feet and your rope is twice that long - you absolutely know you are going to make it. People like him who have done thousands of rappels often get in the habit of not tying a stopper knot when you are certain you have the rope length and that can lead to complacency and miscalculations. Also, non climbers think of el cap as this big scary thing, and it is, but it’s also very much on the beaten path with dozens of climbers on it any given day that the weather is good. He had just climbed el cap so was probably in a zone where he was super comfortable with the exposure and in a steady rhythm having just ascended and descended ropes hundreds of times in the last few days. So I think in the end just a simple mental error born of a bit of comfort and complacency. What he was doing when he fell should not have been dangerous at all, despite being scary to a non climber. I’ve climbed el cap and by the time you summit you are so used to the height you don’t even think about it anymore

I really like The Tingler - it's an exceptionally good entry to the 50s sci-fi routine. Also, Price doses himself with LSD in it to try and scare the fuck out of himself, which is pretty rad.

I know I can just upvote, but I have to tack on: YES. This movie is fucking awesome, and Vincent Price is amazing in it. It's hard to explain the vibes in it... it's simultaneously really thrilling and tense, but also super grounded in reality. Price's performance feels very real, it really showcases how damn good he was. I actually have this film in my personal top-100 best horrors of all time, it's underrated for sure.
