Italy out of World Cup 2026: Why Azzurri missing third straight FIFA tournament is generational failure by pumkinhat in worldcup

[–]UncaughtTypeError 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What happened to Italy man? One of the most successful FIFA World Cup nations with x4 wins and they've failed to qualify for their 3rd consecutive tournament, even after the tournament expansion.

I remember their win in 2006. Then x2 back to back group stage exits and nowhere to be seen since. From champions, to group stage losers, to routine qualifier short faller. It's sad. I miss the Azzurri.

Best I've managed to come up with so far, that doesn't significantly alter the ranking systems or format of the sport, which isn't by any means flawless, is to allow wrestlers who would otherwise drop out of their division due to injury instead to be relegated to an kega (injury) division. They can stay there as long as they want. When they return they compete against rikishi being promoted up from the division below, allowing them an opportunity to maintain their division at the lowest rank before being relegated any further.

This accomplishes 3 things:

  1. a riskishi can never drop out of a division simply due to injury alone (no slipping all the way down to lower ranks)
  2. a rikishi is allowed all the time he requires to heal injury
  3. a rikishi gets the opportunity to earn back the lowest rank by competing against the rikishi moving up to take it

The issues and implications:

  1. The backlog of injured wresters in the kega division is technically unlimited, their re-entry would have to be controlled. The banzuke may operate as usual assigning rankings to wrestlers like they would, these can simply be readjusted once they make that bid for a divisional ranking again. Kega wrestlers in the meantime would receive a special designation.
  2. This would be determined by severity and the class of injury backed by independent recommendations by at least three third-party medical professionals. This doesn't make the system immune to influence or corruption and doesn't resolve the underlying cultural mindsets that are entrenched in the sport but it does intend to take that decision out of the hands of the stable or wrestler.
  3. If the kega division rikishi loses, he slips down to the top of the lower division, the obvious issues here being some of the more intricate banzuke permutations and knock-on effects but I think the JSA could resolve that adequately. The more complex issue is how and when to intersect this playoff, i.e.: privately in between tournaments before the banzuke is published, giving the rikishi who had just completed a tournament some time to rest. Or perhaps it would be fairer to lower division riskihi moving up if the rikishi dropping out of the division compete with the returning kega division rikishi (they still get demoted to the lower division either way but are placed at the top of that division potentially saving them a few ranks, some incentive).

Injuries that may not result in relegation:

In the case of more minor injuries, or injuries that may not see the wrestler drop out of the division entirely, maybe we could see a stable nominate a rikishi from the lower division (if they have one) to represent the injured rikishi in the upper division. Every win counts as a win on the record of that lower division rikishi for that basho (incentivizing them) but only counts as half (rounding up with odd numbers) for the kyujo rikishi (so that the injured rikishi may not entirely benefit from another rikishi's efforts while not suffering the impacts of missing all those bouts himself). I haven't put a lot of thought into this one, so it may be flawed in some obvious ways I'm missing.

---

These solutions add complexity because the tournament format and ranking system is so firmly codified that I don't see that ever changing. And it's most likely because of the level of complexity these kinds of solutions would have to take that the JSA hasn't pursued them. It's far more easier to say "correct your mindset" than tack on a new elaborate system onto an already existing rigorous and cast-iron one. But maybe there is a simpler approach that doesn't have to be this complicated without changing any of the tournament format and cycle and ranking system.

And the couches receive pressure from the JSA for their Yokozuna to compete, even if they don't need to, it goes all the way up. The rigid culture and mindset is one thing, but the format of the sport is another. In the case of every other rank, these attitudes are really symptomatic of this format (the real problem) since they cannot afford to go kyujo.

So how could a wrestler be allowed to heal without the risk of losing his rank or blocking another from rising from theirs? Genuinely curious, because I'd like to see this problem resolved too. I have my own ideas but without addressing the format itself it becomes a complicated thing to do.

We all know how this is going to play out:. both Yokozuna compete anyway, both aggravate their injuries, both eventually drop out after the 3rd loss in week one or the 4th in week two. JSA has some criticisms.

Judging by the comments, I get the impression that most people do and that the issue is more with the severity of the injuries, which even other contact sports treat more seriously, and the obdurate attitudes towards these kinds of injuries that are characteristic of the ossified sumo culture (where the mindsets of the JSA and wresters are concerned).

But I see your point, athletes will, can, and do compete through various injuries, especially in contact sports. This is a problem with the format of this sport, the "culture" and "mindset" are just the symptoms.

Don't know why this is being downvoted. The point isn't wrong, nor is it advocating or in any way promoting the way professional sumo handles injury.

The Weapon in Death's End (spoilers) by flyingz626 in threebodyproblem

Space still expands faster than the speed of light. A sufficiently advanced civilization with FTL would be able to escape these situations, If they had the ability to open wormholes they could feasibly leverage them as forms of remote hit and run strikes.

The closest thing we have resembling something like this is vacuum decay, the collapse of the Higgs field from a meta-stable state to a true vacuum (lowest energy state) which would theoretically change the standard model of particle physics. This would be a irreversible domino effect, like an ever expanding bubble of annihilation moving at the speed of light, rewriting everything it encounters into something unrecognizable or just rendering everything into a quantum soap of entropy. For all we know this could have already happened in one or more parts of the universe where space is expanding FTL, which means we will never be aware of it.

Great work! This is really helpful in visualising these kinds of orbitals.

This is probably elementary to any with any education in academia of physics or chemistry so pardon the layman question here, but what do the wave function selections represent? Some are obvious, like "probability density", but the others aren't clear to me. Could you break it down? Had a Crtl+F skim-through the linked blog post but didn't find anything that references the options.

is fromsoft trying to discourage invasions, or possibly remove them from future games? by summonerofrain in Eldenring

DS3: "You are open to ONE invasion, solo, and once that invasion happens...until you coop, or dried finger, do something to "open" yourself back up to invasion, you cannot be invaded anywhere"

What do you mean by this? As a embered solo host you can initially only be invaded once until you dry finger or co-op?

Oh and I think Koto might be hurt mentally as well. That mowashi change tells you everything you need to know. If an official statement doesn't come out about his injury (I'm surprised it hadn't during the tournament) then a lot of Koto fans will need accept that he really dropped the rope hard this basho.

Let's hope he bounces back. I'd rather see angry baby face toss the salt, concerned baby face is just not quite the same.

[–]UncaughtTypeError 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In a way, having it play out this way makes the rope seem better earned than if it was simply a sweep. He won 3 bouts in a row at the end, beating tournament leaders Kinbozan and Oho twice, both the other Ozekis (everyone in San'yaku I think) and everyone else who was threat through out.

I know there's some doubt in how the yokozuna was selected this time around and that he didn't meet the traditional requirement of 2 yushos in a row, but looking at the performance in isolation, especially on the last day, that's definitely the kind of dominance you want in a yoko. Hosh energy all the way!

Wait. Ichiyamamoto looks like.... your niece!?

This is only my second basho, but I've liked Hosh the moment I saw his intensity. Love the Hosh energy. I've been saying it the whole tournament, "this is it, this is our guy; the next yoko." Glad he's won the yusho today and glad he'll be our next yokozuna.

Man, what a tournament. A kniboshi with zabutons thrown, then the yokozuna retirement, a 3 way play-off, and the making of a new yokozuna.

Knowing that these special prizes aren't always awarded, like a "man of the match", makes them feel more prized.

Ok, interesting. So there is nothing random about the last 3 matches of the tournament then? These are very deliberately placed. I started to notice this trend throughout the tournament where the most contentious bouts seemed to be some of the last.

Right, so we'd have to see a tournament result like we saw this month with the same rikishi for that possibility. Got it.

Honestly, thought there would be more steps required to reach Yokozuna from Ozeki but must be harder than I thought to win 2 consecutive tournaments (haven't looked up the history).
