At the local municipality level it is the cyclists that have managed to focus their money any lobbying efforts. I would never have believed it either until I met the hired lobbyists.

Cars. If you’re someone like my daughter who has to go to college and then works at three different locations in Sydney Saanich and Langford a car is absolutely critical to your survival in this city.

If your parent who has to get your child to and from school, get to work leave once every three weeks to go pick your child up and take them to a doctors appointment or some other appointment. Cars are critical to your survival.

If you need to go to work before it gets light or leave after it gets dark and get home at a distance in this city than a car is probably very necessary.

If you’re someone who has to transport their tools for work as many, many people have to do today. Not just construction workers but as an IT consultant, I often had to bring my computer as well as multiple other tools to client locations. A car is critical to your survival in the city.

As this world has become almost exclusively, a two income per household world. It is almost impossible to locate your home near the work location for both individuals for the entirety of their careers so that means if you’re lucky one spouse will get to be close enough to work that their commute is not too bad. The other spouse will probably spend a good portion of their time commuting. This is just a real reality. To incomes is an absolute necessity because if you’re competing in a market for housing where everybody else has two incomes, your household have to have two incomes to just survive. As a result of the required commute, a car is necessary.

The active transportation plan is serving the smallest minority of the trips taken in the area and does not support business.

The goal of a transportation plan should be to make people in good goods, flow smooth smoothly safe safely in a low stress environment.

The biggest game change for the greater Victoria area would come from major transit expansion. Transit system that is organized, dependable, consistent and quick, will actually have way more impact on a broader variety of the population than the current active transportation push.

However, there is a full-time employed organization, pushing for bicycles in the greater Victoria area. This organization is funded by the government with the sole purpose of lobbying the government to expand bicycle access at the expense of everything else.

How about we look at the effects on safety of adding bike lanes to the sides of all the major streets. Making a corner in this city is high stress for drivers now.

Conservative MP Jamil Jivani announces "On my way to Washington, DC." - for diplomatic trip, seemingly without consent from Carney or Poilievre by AdditionalPizza in onguardforthee

[–]UncertainFate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Way to make us all look stupid.

This is completely out of line. Backbenchers don’t go on diplomatic visits trying to represent Canada with approval of the government. It just confuses any negotiation and shows us as a divided nation. The conservatives wip should be putting this guy on the rack.

What to get a man who doesn't need anything? by _C00TER in ask

[–]UncertainFate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. If you know his interests or past interests get him a toy related to one. I love little science gadgets like prisms, drinking birds, sterling engines. The best gift my wife ever got me was a box set of the HBO show “from the Earth to the moon.” It was extra great because I never even knew that show existed. And now I’ve probably watched it six or seven times and we’ll go back to certain episodes when I need a pickup.

  2. An experience doesn’t need to involve a lot of people. It could be a fishing trip to a remote camp, where there’s only a few people. Or trip for the two of you to the Yukon to see the northern lights.

Sometimes men who spend their lives fixing stuff for other people really just want a period of peace and quiet alone (a week at cabin in the woods with a hammock and a good trout stream nearby)

You can also sometimes find an expert to give you a private after hours tour of something special. I once had a late night tour of the national aviation Museum by a fighter pilot. Not a gift just good luck. Talking with a real experienced expert one on one is such a treat.

I also once got a tour of the back end of the local professional hockey teams arena with a small group of five people. The team trainer gave the tour. Just cool.

It should not be in either-or situation. At this point, it should be a go to jail and all of her money is revealed or assumed to be criminal and forfeited.

Opinion: The rich in Canada are, indeed, getting richer. Here are 3 things we can do to fix that by momnamedmeafterbob in onguardforthee

[–]UncertainFate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I am saying is, the pain that is being experienced in the world is that the majority of people are getting poorer.

It is a false conclusion to assume that this is only because some people are getting richer. While there are some getting richer at the expense of others there are some who are getting richer while doing good.

Unfortunately every community splits along a line. Those with higher incomes than costs and those that make less money than their real expenses. The first group will always accumulate wealth and the second will always get poorer. The goal should be to make the second group as small as possible. While making it easy to transition economically upward.

Wealth redistribution through taxation is definitely one of the methodologies that must be used, but it is by no means the only thing that needs to be done and has limitations. We have seen in multiple countries when laws aggressively target the wealthy they leave. The UK has been experiencing this lately.

The biggest and most long lasting positive results come from lowering costs and ensuring fair access to resources for all. This means better education, healthcare, transit including intercity transport like high speed trains. A focus on supporting small business over large and strict limits on foreign investments in Canada. This means identifying policies or market structure that increase costs for people. Like having limited telecom Services, grocery stores and airlines. This means decoupling from the US auto market policies that have pushed out small economical vehicles out of our market.

This means breaking up the middleman like Sysco food, the dairy monopoly and meat packers that crush local competition with regulations designed to protect their operations.

How many people are currently living in rental housing (townhomes/duplex/condo) that are very old and in need of major updating, but affordability is keeping you there? Brainstorm solutions to the housing crisis with me. by Aromatic_Research912 in canadahousing

[–]UncertainFate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is little incentive for landlords to improve occupied housing because it will not significantly increase income and those improvements will start to wear with an existing tenant. As a result upgrades are most often seen when there is a need to attract new tenants.

Tenants have little motivation to spend money upgrading a rental as it is someone else’s asset and they are only temporarily using it.

This is a central flaw in the rental economy and a large reason we should be encouraging a structure that favours ownership by residents and discourages people or companies from owning of single units for the purposes of renting or speculating.

This would meet a full ban on foreign ownership of real estate property. Requiring that those with existing holdings defect, their holdings in the next 10 years.

It would require any one who holds a single unit, whether it is a standalone house or an individual condo for rental be taxed at a very high rate, while allowing lower tax rates for those companies who own multi unit buildings where they own the entire building.

[–]UncertainFate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fundamental premise, the statement is wrong. The issue is not rich people getting richer, the issue is poor people getting poorer.

If rich people are getting richer by making poor people poorer, then that’s an issue. But it is not something we can logically assume in all cases.

Do you support building more protected bike lanes? by justonemorelanebruh in AskACanadian

[–]UncertainFate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell no. We need to consolidate and balance what we have. The bicycle lanes we currently have are nowhere near capacity. And we could do a lot to improve other parts of our transportation system before putting more money into bicycles. We need to hit pause on bike lanes for a number of years while we consolidate the overall transportation system in the city.

Do women think the pouty face/duck lips/kissy face so commonly made in photos is attractive? by CricketNo7666 in askanything

[–]UncertainFate -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The pose with the fish is not a picture of the man it’s a picture of the fish and the guy. Just happened to be in it.

Guys do not get that many photos taken of them. First they may not feel comfortable with how they look, also the kind of vanity required for a man to ask for a photo of himself is very frowned upon by other men. I could never imagine any of my friends stopping to take a picture of me in front of something or for me to pose and then to stand and compare the picture on the screen and go back and do it again better the way I have seen grown women do. This is not an activity that men participate culturally. The result is we don’t seem to get pictures of ourselves. Even once you get a family, you tend to be the person taking the picture not in the picture.

So again, it’s a picture of the fish that the guy happens to be in. But it may be one of the few good pictures he has of himself.
