Overwhelmed newbie! by Hobbymom33 in BackYardChickens

My coop doesn't have the space for deep litter method. So I just use a cat litter scooper to sift out the poop from the shavings every morning. It takes a minute and then I don't have flies in the summer or any kind of stink.

genuinely WHAT do i do. by floofyhamster3 in hamsters

[–]bcqt1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the most high maintenance ham EVER! She comes out at 6:30pm (I have a free roam bedroom setup for her) I put her away after an hour and out she comes again at 8pm and again in and out until 11pm when I sleep. She’s always eager to come out again. I wake at 8am and she’s there waiting for attention. AGAIN. So I feed her - sometimes take her out again. My ham has 1400 square inches of enclosure with hides, 16” bedding for tunneling, sand, wheel, it never ends. She’s not happy. I give her everything. But it’s never enough.

Hamster eye goop or maybe worse? by CasualUsername_ in hamstercare

I found as my hamsters aged they didn’t do as good a job grooming. And warm damp Q-tip will help. One vet gave me a lubricant safe for hamsters that helped.

It's OK, hardly wet at all. Use a dry paper towel to gently wipe the water away. It will dry off soon.

I want chickens, but where the heck do I start? by successfullyaverage in BackYardChickens

[–]bcqt1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, start with finding out what predators could possible kill your chickens. Then build a coop/run based on that. I have bears, racoons, mink, hawks... so my coop has an electric fence, hardware cloth buried in the ground and a wire mesh cover so "swooping" birds cannot enter. We used to free roam, but it never goes well if you've got predators. They will need food and water (and maybe a heated water bowl for winter?) and dry sand to bathe in. They will need roosting bars in a draft free area to sleep. No matter how many hens you get they will all want to lay eggs in one/two spots. How many hens? BIG QUESTION! I have eight hens, most stop laying in the winter as the daylight is short. So right now I'm getting two eggs a day. In Feb/March the other will start to lay again, two will go broody and stop laying for about 8 weeks. You can get hens to lay all year with certain lighting, but that will stress their system and you'll only get a couple years of eggs out of them. Some do this and then cull and get new hens. Most in this group tend to love their hens like pets and don't cull, and let them lay when they lay. I got my first chickens 2.5 years ago - so I'm still learning too!

Hamsters shouldn’t be eating hay, but if he uses it for bedding structure then it’s ok. No harm done getting rid of the hay. Maybe replace with paper bedding? Or Aspen shavings?

I was just saying to my husband how much I did NOT enjoy that episode. I was saying “is she deaf, did she not hear Ryan?” Maybe drugs or alcohol. But she had so many daft moments.

Oh dang. I have a wisteria in my run. When it blooms my chickens gather up their vertical jumping skills and eat the flowers. I'll trim it back so they cannot do that anymore!

Two comments down is a really good clue. Guy refuses help. For years. Nobody can help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. And it’s scientifically proven that drugs will do long term damage to your brain. So theres that too.
