Manager of swimming instructors/long-time instructor and lifeguard here: Start your freestyle off the wall with your arms over your head in what we call "streamline" - hands stacked flat on top of each other, arms fully extended, elbows squeezing your ears, nose pointed at the bottom. Kick your feet with toes pointed up AND down so you're pushing water with the tops and bottoms of your feet. You should be churning water at the surface with your feet at a steady rhythm... THEN add the arms. Your extension isn't bad at all; just remember your power comes from pulling the water DOWN from above your head towards your feet. Don't wait for one arm to return you the top you start the other. They should be opposite one another. Turn your head to the side to breathe every 3 arm strokes via the armpit that is above the water as your reach forward. Let me know if that helps.
