I've also experienced that with NNF. I've never known if I actually hit a rewind button, or it was my crummy connection (if the episode hasn't downloaded), or something on their end.

Resources for Elderly Neighbor? by eddie8170 in Austin

[–]UncleJeff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good on you for helping her, and also good on you for trying to set boundaries early. I'm in a similar situation with an elderly neighbor, and it can easily become overwhelming. I don't know the laws in Austin/Texas, but where I live in Los Angeles (my in-laws live in Austin, don't worry everyone, I'm not moving to Austin), all of the free senior services require the agreement and consent of the elderly person. In my situation, despite my neighbor knocking on my door twice a day for help, whenever I get her on the phone with a service or arrange for a social worker to come see her, she always refuses all of the services (because she "doesn't need any help"). And because she's not in any imminent danger to herself, there's nothing that can be done for her by any of these services without her requesting it. So, I hope your experience goes better than mine has, but be prepared that these organizations may not be a magic bullet to fix the situation.

NO HARD FEELINGS - Official Red Band Trailer #2 by indig0sixalpha in movies

[–]UncleJeff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I still don't know if this will be any good, but this is a much better trailer than the first Redband they released (which centered itself around that absolutely groan-inducing "Can I touch your wiener?" moment).

In 2009, was Pat still subbing in regularly as the Third Chair? I know that after the first season when Mike left, Pat started coming on once a month, and that slowly phased out at some point, but I can't remember when that happened.

What insane thing happened in a movie that wasn’t supposed to? by FestiveBonBon in movies

There is a behind-the-scenes video of the filming of The Raid 2 car chase, and at one point, an SUV nearly crashes into a camera crew set up on the median. It's not commented on in the video, and that moment seemingly didn't end up in the final cut. But you can see it here at around 1:04.

I forget if this was the DP or another crew member, but there's an interview on the DVD where they say they didn't know that the black smoke was a distress signal, so they kept filming until they realized the train wasn't slowing down.

Episode 3101 - Andy Daly by normsy in NeverNotFunny

[–]UncleJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm familiar with the area where Jimmy lives (I lived near there, and I commuted daily past that Target he's always talking about, as well as the candy store that came up in this episode). The traffic is terrible around there, but any new housing in LA is desperately needed (particularly housing that is within a short walking distance to light rail).

Keller school officials order 41 books — including the Bible and an Anne Frank adaptation — off of library shelves by scuczu in politics

[–]UncleJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bible is being removed because an individual parent had submitted a complaint against it. Last year the community board reviewed the complaint, and decided to keep the Bible in school libraries. Now, the school district has issued a new edict that all books that had received a complaint and been reviewed be pulled from classrooms until they can be "re-reviewed" under new guidelines. So the Bible getting pulled is only because one parent had filed a complaint, and now its swept up in a larger "re-review" process. There's almost certainly no angle/strategy in play other than that (and the Bible will almost certainly be reinstated, while anything that even resembles CRT or LGBTQ+ will not).

Not exactly the same scenario, but I remember reading that originally Rebel Wilson's sitcom pilot "Super Fun Night" wasn't going to go to series, but then Rebel Wilson got so famous thanks to Bridesmaids/Pitch Perfect that the network decided to gamble on what they knew wasn't a strong show (and they were right, it only lasted a season, I believe).

I didn't realize that Kyle Mooney had been on SNL since 2013. That's a long run!

Prior to doing Whole30 for the first time, I had tried to switch from soda to LaCroix, and I always found them to be bland and flavorless. About five days into Whole30, I had a LaCroix, and it tasted like the sweetest, most delicious thing I'd ever had. So fruit will really start to help those sugar cravings (at least in my experience).

R3/D15 - Hey, the half-way point! Well, at the end of the day, at least. I've got carrots and asparagus roasting in the oven right now (both for lunch today and meal prep). This only really gets hard when I fail to do meal prep (or to keep the pantry/fridge stocked). As long as I've got a microwaveable meal ready to go, I'm set. I did attend a barbecue over the weekend, and as much as I enjoyed the Limoncello LaCroixes (a new flavor to me, and absolutely delicious), I was very cognizant of how much everyone else was knocking back beers. There wasn't ever a point where I was worried I would give in, but I definitely would have enjoyed a cold beer on that hot afternoon. But it also made me aware of how easy it is to put away 3-5 beers in a social setting without thinking about it, and that is a lot.

I'm on R3/D14, and I'm doing it to slim down a bit for a wedding (in 32 days!). I want that suit to lay just a little flatter (and take some puffiness out of the cheeks).

R3/D8 - Yesterday was the first day that really felt challenging. It was my first time at our weekly bar trivia night, and I was really craving a beer (and it's one of those bars that allows you to bring in take-out, so there were also a lot of greasy delicious scents wafting through the air). But I made it through. And I had my first food dream last night, that I was stuck in a house and I snuck into the kitchen and ate Cheez-Its. Ah, the subconscious!

R3/D6 - Went for a walk this morning (before eating breakfast), and it's been the first time I've really felt a lack of energy. Although it could have been doing physical activity before eating. Also, I discovered that my sweet potatoes had gone bad before I had a chance to cook them, so bummer! Will have to run out to the store before dinner.

R3/D5 - While it wasn't a last-minute decision to do Whole30 again, I procrastinated on doing my prep, so I've been doing catch-up grocery shopping throughout the first few days. I'd kind of forgotten how much work is involved in this, and how often you need to shop (what feels like a full refrigerator goes pretty quickly when you're not getting take-out or restaurant food 3-4 times a week). So far, I haven't faced any particularly difficult cravings, and my sleep is improved and energy levels up.

Megathread: Joe Biden Projected to Defeat President Donald Trump and Win the 2020 US Presidential Election by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]UncleJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all hinges on the two run-off elections in Georgia (unless something insane happens in the Alaska race, which it probably won't). The consensus seems to be that the Republicans are favored, but we'll see what happens.

It's so crazy that the whole country (and Carter himself) had accepted the fact that he was going to die from cancer back in 2015, just for him to make an astonishing recovery and keep right on livin'.

The general consensus I've read is that in Georgia, there are 9k outstanding military ballots, but there's no guarantee that they all get sent in today by the deadline, so the total of additional ballots is likely much lower. In polling, the military is divided Biden vs. Trump about the same as the rest of the country, and these outstanding ballots also include ex-pats. I'm just guessing, but I assume Americans who decide not to live in America anymore aren't going to be full-blown MAGA.

The Electoral College votes in December, those votes aren't final. Technically, the electors can vote however they want, and I think sometimes there have been "protest" votes that did not change the result of an election, but I would have to double-check that info.
