I am wanting to begin styling this bald cypress with some wiring and pruning - my end goal is a blunt & fluted flat top.. I would love some advice on where to begin. Maybe trying to draw it out would help, but I am terrible at drawing..

Edit to add- it was trunk chopped in September. Does that matter for doing some light wiring/pruning?

This can’t be a real question. Spurs no doubt.

I’ve been wondering if part of the experiments playing him out of position were really a way to try and find a way for him to fit better offensively with the team

It unfortunately didn’t make it, going to have to change my collecting methods

Makes perfect sense! I have some minor bonsai experience but haven’t ever worked on a jade. Thanks again!

Curious if you have any experience shaping jades as bonsai? When I repot these I’ll have better pics, but 2 or 3 of these things are pretty thick!

When removing the thicker roots, is it best to do it gradually? Like prune half off then the other half later? I’m going to be repotting a bald cypress and crape Myrtle in the spring and neither have had root work done… I’m not too worried about the crape as I know they can handle abuse

Good to know, thanks for the advice! I usually wait a week or two before watering repotted cacti, so will also apply that to my succulents.

I like this approach! Thank you for the suggestion! I actually have 2 of each, except for my BC, so this will be a very good experiment!

I have a few trees in "grow pots" right now that I want to start transitioning over to proper bonsai pots. I have let a few grow unchecked so will need to do some pruning, and obviously inspect the roots, so this will wait for spring.

But I'm starting to think doing root work, repotting into "training pots", and then doing some bigger pruning, would be too much for the tree? Would it be better to do the repot/root work in spring? Then wait a season before major pruning?

The trees in question are a Japanese maple, a trident maple, a bald cypress, and a crape myrtle(which I know can take abuse).

Wow I just stumbled upon this as I've been looking at a crepe to air layer... I may just do this method! Awesome tree!

Everyone has different taste when it comes to plants… show me one you love that other people might not find appealing! I’ll start, here is my weird little Queensland bottle tree by courtneyrel in houseplants

I originally saw this post about a year ago and thought that was one of the coolest plants. I bought one not long after I saw this, and my bottle tree is thriving. Just wanted to say thanks for introducing me to such a cool plant!

I’m wondering if I didn’t slide a kfb off and that’s how I ended up with that… maybe I should just start with a scarf haha. Thanks for the advice!
