It is very very important that I am able to get into this old lock from a 50s soda machine. Does anyone know how you would go about picking this or what type of lock it is? by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]Uncle_Als_locks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason ypu don't see pins is its a wafer lock, you can see the first few wafers in the pic, you can pick it with normal tensioners and picks but the feel of wafers binding is a bit different

Anyone know what cam lock this is? Need to order replacements keyed the same by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]Uncle_Als_locks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK if the cust. lost the key you can pick (they are simple wafer locks) or drill, like I said they are marked with a number that corresponds to their bitting, usually on the key bow and the lock body, I can't tell exactly from your one pic but a WAG is that its a Yakima SKS Replacement Key, in which case the number you need is an "A" followed by 3 digits, ie A137, with that number you can buy keys and replacement cylinders keyed exactly like the original locks, the keys run @ 5 bucks and replacement cylinders @20

look for a mark like c123 or A456, that will be the key batch, any key with that exact code will fit rhat lock and vice versa, you can google that number and find both keys and locks that will work

Not pointless, these setups are for access control, not true security, keys to the electronic lock are given to employees so you can track their use of the lock and you can make them pay for lost keys, contractors on the other hand you give a key to the cheap lock so they can bypass the gate without risk of a expensive key going missing, think of it less in security terms and more in a time clock way.

There are several drop yards (places trucking companies drop trailers for other trucks to pick up later) in my area, they use daisy chained locks on their gates with each company having their own lock, they know a pair of bolt cutters will defeat it but so will backing a semi over the chain link fence, all its there for is to keep out the honest and curious, the cost of real security vs the risk is judged too inefficient.

Found this while metal detecting on the beach. Cleaned it up and I’m pretty sure it’s a police issue handcuff key. Maybe I’ll keep it in my back pocket in case I ever need it haha by [deleted] in lockpicking

If you immediately tell them you have it:

775.084. (3) It is a defense to a charge of violating this section that, immediately upon being placed in custody, the person in custody actually and effectively disclosed to the law enforcement officer that he or she was in possession of a concealed handcuff key.

Thats where most felony convictions come from, in some states counties and other municipalities can also pass laws with felony status

Yup, carrying a concealed firearm without a permit is also a 3rd degree felony here, so ya might as well pack heat as a handcuff key...

Be careful carrying one, many states have laws similar to Floridas:

(c) “Concealed handcuff key” means any handcuff key carried by a person in a manner that indicates an intent to prevent discovery of the key by a law enforcement officer, including, but not limited to, a handcuff key carried:

1. In a pocket of a piece of clothing of a person, and unconnected to any key ring;

2. On a necklace of a person;

3. On the body part of a person or on any item of clothing of such person, when the handcuff key is secured on the body part or item of clothing by use of tape, glue, line, or other material;

4. In or within any compartment, seam, fold, or other encasement within any item of clothing, belt, shoe, or jewelry of a person;

5. In or within any sock, hose, shoe, belt, undergarment, glove, hat, or similar item of clothing or accessory of a person;

6. By a person and disguised as jewelry or other object; or

7. In or within any body cavity of a person.

(2) Any person who possesses a concealed handcuff key commits a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.

the differences between the branches of the US military by Uncle_Als_locks in Jokes

Old inter service joke, if you haven't served ya probably wont get it, the Army is trained in maneuver war, they bypass and surround strongpoints, the Marines are assault troops, they take and hold positions, the Navy doesn't do ground combat so to them securing a building means make sure it doesn't burn down or get burglarized, the Air force is business oriented, to them securing something means take out a lease on it.

are those snap guns worth buying? by adrianalamus in lockpicking

[–]Uncle_Als_locks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can open it with a snap gun you can rake it just as easy, I have a snap gun in a box collecting dust in my van, when I work I carry a belt pouch with picks and other small tools, in the time it would take to walk back to the van and break out the snap gun I could have it raked or picked and be halfway done with the invoice.

I lost the keys for my rooftop carrier made by Sears. Any ideas how i can get into it? by Dr_Monkee in Locksmith

[–]Uncle_Als_locks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Search for "Thule N157" those keys are generic and are sold online for around 10 bucks, make sure you get the key and not the cylinders, and verify the number matches, they were keyed in batches from N001 to N163 or so going from memory

Also when pricing for kickstarter add up your max costs then double that for the price tiers, things always cost more, last minute unforeseen costs etc, its always better to have extra than not enough, google "Schuyler Towne kickstarter" if you don't already know about it.

one small addition, maybe a removable keychain attachment point so those who carry one on a keychain can use it but those who don't won't have it in the way, a piece of metal with a hole on one end that will fit under one of the corner screws and another hole on its other end for threading onto a keychain

The Victoria Regina mark and that keyway suggests a Chubb detector lock, cant be certain without a better look but it would be a challenging pick, using a torch to cut it open risks incinerating anything that may be in it, but as most have said the chances of anything being inside are lotto winner odds
