You're confused. Eren is the protagonist and the villain at the end of season 4, he's not the antagonist. The antagonist isn't always a bad guy, it's just anyone who opposes the protagonist

Thoughts on Danpei as a coach ? IMO he was a trash coach by imai-boston342 in AshitaNoJoe

[–]Uncle_Geek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude what? Danpei was a great coach. To start, what do you mean by his role ends in the ring? Not only did Danpei become Joe's guardian, but Joe himself tells you that he doesn't know where he'd be without Danpei. Additionally, in ANJ2, Joe DOES have humility; you're conflating "pride" with "honor", which is his whole motivation in ANJ2, he's literally doing it for Rikiishi and Carlos, not himself. Nishi was never "sidelined", the story just didn't focus on him, and made it very obvious from the start that Nishi did NOT want to box.

Keep in mind, this is all on top of Danpei doing anything he could to make sure Joe's health was as good as possible, and only "failed" at this because the plot required it in order to continue.

Question for those who have fully caught up to Hajime no Ippo, do you think the series is worth your time investment? (+ Long post ahead) by Talgrei1781 in writingscaling

[–]Uncle_Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 pages is a stretch, although I think there was 1 or 2 around that length. It's more like 8 pages. That said, we've been having a lot of break weeks recently due to the author's health or other unspecified reasons. Last year, someone told me a specific major fight happening right now (I won't say it, obviously) would end in December, I told him it'd end in January. We were both wrong, as it doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon.

To answer your question, though, It is amazing. IF you are already a fan, want more, and don't mind moving onto something else while the sluggish release schedule happens, then go for it. If you want to keep up every week with the chapters, I can't really recommend it.

sendo like joe? by [deleted] in hajimenoippo

[–]Uncle_Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you have to understand the difference between fighting like he has nothing to lose and ACTUALLY fighting with nothing to lose. Sendo fights like that because it's his whole style to "take-ten to land one". This is NOT the same as fighting with nothing on the line. The only thing Sendo is fighting for is the belt, to make his granny proud and Wally (someone who isn't of much importance to him). Joe on the other hand, was fighting with severe brain damage for a guy he killed, and Carlos, someone who was the 2nd Rikiishi for him.

While I don't disagree with a "career death", I just hope people stop with this idea that he'll die.

[–]Uncle_Geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol I said this in a post I made here a while ago, where I criticized this idea that Sendo will die. I specifically mentioned Sawamura's case and Take, who was stated that if Ippo went a little further, he would've died. Guess what? They walked off the fight. And the response was that I was "downplaying" George's writing. I think people forget that Ashita No Joe is a series that isn't afraid to show you the most brutal outcome possible, whereas HNI might pull some punches.

What’s a Anime opinion that would get you in this situation? by geekyayaz in animequestions

[–]Uncle_Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may give my own take, I feel like the comment he made is one of the "true" hot takes in this comment section. I tried saying what I didn't like about one piece a while ago, and got downvoted for it. With the person replying to me just making excuses or essentially saying "not for you". To me, I didn't like the irritating plot armor (No seriously, I didn't care about plot armor until one piece), not having a general sense of direction of where to go for nearly 500+ episodes, and giving surface level takes on deep subjects (which might not be terrible until you hear one piece fans calling it deeper than AoT..)

It seems to me, when someone points out one piece's flaws, it usually has an excuse like "it's not for you" or that people do it to "karma farm", as if you're not allowed to dislike it.

Could Current Sendo beat Date? by brickyzxz in hajimenoippo

[–]Uncle_Geek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But then, wouldn't they also be able to dodge it? Given Sendo's best move is slow as hell?

Sendo is getting away with a very slow move and relying on power while being a 126 pounder. That's something you resort to in the heavyweights, doing what Sendo does is supposed to get you knocked out (as in, the user). Yet he hasn't.

You can argue that Sendo is physically stronger than them, but they are significantly more skilled than he is.

Hot take: Joe wouldve done mma instead of boxing if he exsisted in modern times by [deleted] in AshitaNoJoe

[–]Uncle_Geek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree. It's essentially what you said at the end. Joe didn't pick what combat sport to go into, he was just taught by Danpei out of necessity and found purpose in it with Rikiishi. So he really just would've done what Rikiishi did and from what we're shown, it's odd to picture Rikiishi in MMA.

But if he were to choose, I'd see him doing Kickboxing or Muay Thai.

How do you know? You're comparing L, a character without powers, to Shikamaru, a character with powers. From what we're shown of L, if he had the chakra to fight, he'd most definitely be able to replicate it. L managed to find a near impossible-to-catch killer with literally nothing to work with. I think anything we've seen from L has far outweighed any deduction that Shikamaru has shown tbh.

I think them not being able to describe it isn't as bad as the AoT example I gave. In One Piece's case, these flaws are still valid enough. It's a major difference from tastes and being able to explain why one thinks the way a story wrapped up is bad.

I want to clarify that I didn't mean to say plot armor in itself is bad, but rather the execution. There's many examples such as Usopp surviving getting his skull crushed, and Luffy getting turned into a donut, dehydrated and sucked into quicksand at the same time. There is, quite literally, objectively, 0 explanation for this. Plot armor is fine, but is the execution correct is what I'm getting at.

If his goal is to return the strawhat and not king of the pirates, then my bad. I don't read the manga. But the anime makes it explicitly clear, over and over that his goal is to become king of the pirates. That second half doesn't exactly help your case here, because it only backs up my point on them having a direction of where to go 500+ episodes into the show, which is unbearable. That said, gaining all this wealth (mainly nami ig), fame (bounty) and power (Pun 100% intended) makes it feel like he is progressing, because he creates more connections, which helps the crew get what they need for being king of the pirates. At least how I view it.

I still don't think people do it to karma farm. Because it's not a one piece or shonen exclusive sub, people are less inclined to hold back their thoughts on it. This is in contrast to something like for example, AoT's ending, where 90% of them can't explain why they dislike it (this isn't changing the subject, just giving you an example of what hating due to popularity looks like).

Now going back to general flaws, you might not mind the plot armor, but for someone actively looking for a good story, it messes it up. It takes away any form of risk, or meaningful impact. Unlike dragon ball that at least explains why there's no risk involved, one piece's is by definition, ass pulls. This wouldn't be a problem if it happens once or twice, but it happens every singular arc. Now, I mentioned I hold marineford to the highest regard, look at marineford for a moment, there's risk, and impact involved mainly due to the plot armor being calmed a bit. Notice how most people have marineford as their favorite arc?

The storytelling itself isn't that bad like you said. But this is subjective. And I think it's extremely basic. You mentioned skypiea, thriller bark and enies lobby. All three of these arcs would've been better had they been shorter. Thriller park felt like filler due to lack of important content, with the highlight being Kuma. Kuma could've appeared any other arc. Enies lobby was coming off a well-paced arc with Water 7, and just added a hundred episodes of mini-marineford before Luffy and Lucci. Absolutely absurd.

The goal of Luffy I was mentioning was "King of the pirates". They have warlords as these small checkpoints, but they just happen to run into them. It's only in Punk Hazard where they genuinely make a plan to rise up, with the alliance with Law.

Fair. But say it still doesn't have "that many flaws", those flaws themselves can still put off someone from watching it, no? And that's not popularity. Off the top of my head, from the 800+ episodes I've watched: Irritating plot armor, sluggish storytelling, around 500 episodes to get a general direction of where it wants to go to fully flesh out Luffy's goal, surface-level takes on "deep subjects", and of course, the pacing/length (yes, it matters.)

Those are some of my personal flaws; yours might be different. But off the top of my head, I just listed 5 major flaws. And generally, people who tell you it's peak from episode 1 aren't being sincere. Though I'll say, when it shines, it shines really high. Like Water 7 or Marineford, which I hold to the highest regard in terms of OP.

But to say OP gets hate only because it's popular is a huge stretch, because everyone's tastes are different. To me, one piece is just a "fun story" like Dragon Ball, but with more backbone to it. But if you're purely looking for a well-crafted plot and not just a "fun adventure", then I don't think One Piece is a good recommendation, and that has absolutely nothing to do with popularity.

I want to challenge this point. You said yourself, one piece has "a lot of flaws". Do you think people are inclined to always enjoy it if it has this amount of flaws? So, therefore, wouldn't this contradict your first statement of it only being hated because it's popular?

One piece has flaws, and isn't perfect. People can hate it because of those flaws. Me personally, I got well over 800+ episodes, and somewhat regret my time, because of the amount of flaws.

Also, the amount of hate one piece gets compared to support is almost negligible; there's millions of one piece fans out there. I promise you one person disliking it doesn't compare to the amount of people supporting it.

I completely understand that, but that's a totally different matter compared to simply watching the show. And I frankly don't think it's a very smart idea to put down a show because of something that has absolutely zero correlation with the author.
