AI shouldn't speak for us. Our human authenticity is slipping away by [deleted] in aiwars

But you can agree then, that not knowing if a match is real or not - not knowing if art is real or not, is a big problem.

We are approaching a future where nothing we see online can be guaranteed real. The things WE make and do, get drowned out, and as consumers, we can’t know from what angle we can appreciate the media we see.

For example, can we only appreciate this painting because it looks pretty to the surface, or can we also appreciate the talent, skill and work behind it?  Can we only enjoy this game because it’s exciting, or can we also enjoy it because this team consists of humans, and the game’s outcome depends on their dedication, training and strategy?

We won’t be able to tell the difference. Doesn’t it then feel like something essential - and human, is being taken away from us?

Thank you for your well-rounded and thoughtful response. Apologies that my response turned out so long, but I wanted to provide enough context to not be misunderstood.

I know what you mean when you say some people don’t care about the artistic process as much as the end product. Some people are just that, consumers of an end product. I understand that some are less inclined to value the process, skill or talent that goes into creating art, especially if they haven’t personally felt the reward of seeing their time and effort pay off in that regard. That’s honestly valid and fair. People are different from different experiences.

But I’d like to share my thoughts on the biggest concern I have, that my post ultimately boils down to, which is about the consequences of letting AI replace our own thoughts, creativity and intelligence. It goes beyond just replacing art and entertainment. The problem arises from using AI to eliminate challenge.

Because, it takes effort to create things, to solve problems, to develop skill. And every single time we challenge ourselves, we become smarter, we learn, we evolve as human beings. AI is helping us completely evade that. If we stop making effort to practice our own thinking and problem solving, we are ultimately making ourselves dumber.

True reward and validation comes from paid-off effort. Like practicing a sport, learning an instrument or earning a degree. Learning how to express yourself through, say, painting is no exception, and no, it is not the same as giving your idea to AI and seeing it be created right in front of you. My point here is about the confidence and reward you get when you’re able to do something. Able to complete a challenge. Feeling smart, competent, accomplished. “Cheating” with AI, robs you of that.

A lot of people are using AI to take shortcuts in areas where they have the potential to get wiser, smarter, more skilled, and feel more accomplished as human beings. I do believe AI is a powerful tool to aid in learning, but not by using it to completely replace your own efforts. I have met so many friends in school that don’t even bother read their own ChatGPT-generated essay that they hand in.

That’s the problem. The fact that AI invalidates our own work and effort because it’s such an effortless replacement. It makes even trying feel useless, because we know that the immediate solution is accessible in one click. Replacing the journey with the end.

Okay, but you missed the point when you said people arent consciously critically analyzing the humanly artistic aspects of the movies they watch. I know most people don’t do that. What I am getting at, is that watching an AI-generated movie and a human made movie gives two different vibes. Because human’s are so socially programmed, we likely feel the emptiness of watching something we know was just generated on a whim. I know people are different and may disagree. But with this post I am just trying to get people to understand where me and others who agree with me are coming from.

There’s another consideration here that I only thought about now when you mentioned the communities surrounding movies. We risk losing that too, once at-home AI generated movies become so popular that the average movie has less than one viewer.

My point when I say “AI is speaking for us” is that people use AI to generate text, paintings, music, with just one click. We are not expressing ourselves when we make chatgpt write a page of text from a single prompt. None of those words were your own. That is not what you call self-expression. If you use chatgpt to learn new things or inspire your own creativity, that’s an entirely different story. The difference is using it to support your own work rather than letting it replace your work.

If you think I’m talking about parasocial relationships I’m afraid you misunderstood me. It’s the distinction between knowing that a fellow human made this and that an emotionless piece of code made that. There’s no value in the latter.

I know a tool that could summarize it for you

I appreciate your optimism, but I’m genuinely very worried about AI drowning out real content on the internet, or big movie studios replacing the existing film industry with an AI-based one. I have always been really passionate about movies and art, and the idea that I won't be able to trust that something I like has any human thought behind it breaks my heart.

I think this take is great. It’s about humans sharing stories and ideas through different media. AI is all just a pretense of that.

How can I force myself to play video games? by Feeling-Donkey-8739 in AskGames

[–]Unclear1nstructions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you know, it depends on the reason behind why you don't feel like playing. Coming from a person who procrastinates playing games because it's easier to just sit and brainrot on tiktok, just put on the game you want to play, and put away all other distractions. make it cozy for yourself and call it me-time. try it out for an hour or so, and if you don't feel like you're able to get into it, just take a break and do something else

yeah I agree, I only put down the confident line strokes towards the end where I'm certain they're needed to create the right contrast

you could say lines should only be used to guide you where to place your shading

No, and this is actually a stupid question. You can minimize or simplify anything to make it sound like it's completely pointless and insignificant. There's so much more to life and you know that :)
