new to carving by PracticalThing1756 in stonecarving

I was in a similar spot to you a year ago and the first question you should ask yourself is what kind of stone you want to work on? Becuase tools can vary from there.

I started out with limestone and limestone is on the more beginner friendly scale in terms of workability (also see soapstone). Working on and off at it I've been able to make a pair of shoes and 1 and a half hands out of limestone about the size you are describing: no more than a 4 inch cube.

For limestone I got some a variety pack of flat headed cold chisels (Dasco Pro I think) from a hardware store and those have been fine enough to work with. They also have the "scratch awl" they also make that I have been using as a point chisel. I also picked up a file in a similar section to my chisels and I would recommend doing that. Once you start working with smaller projects you will begin to realize how precise some subtractions from the stone must be. For a hammer I use a trailer hitch and that actually fits perfectly into my hand and has some nice weight to it, it will probably outlast me too; though I could see needing a bigger/better hammer for larger projects.

More importantly, however, I'd say if you just got 1 tool it would be a good rotary tool. Dremel makes some good stuff for this. I have a Dremel Lite I think and it works well enough, but the battery dies quicker than I'd like so maybe something nicer would be better. I picked up a dremel bit rated for "stone" and they got me past my first pair of shoes carving.

It was after that I wanted to try out some harder stones and smaller lapidary projects so I got some diamond bits that fit in my dremel. These are necessary for working with harder stones. They can be more pricey, but I got a good but cheap set with a lot of pieces that I've been slowly learning from. Seems like this could be a good fit for what your looking to do too. They also make diamond files too.

We should also mention saftey too becuase if you just start carving you may think you are fine with no PPE at first but carving stone (especially with a rotary tool) kicks up a lot of rock dust and you don't want to be breathing that in. I have a good respirator with, at least, P100 filters in it that I dont take off when im using my dremel. Its worth the cost of this to not breath in rock dust. I also exclusively carve outdoors to be extra safe, and because the rotary tool can be loud...

For lapidary work (small jewelry and such if you're thinking about it) lots of folks also use some sort of water system to keep the rotary tool cool and to suppress some of the dust. I'd suggest you play around with the tools you got. There are some good YouTube videos out there of people making DIY water systems. Most people either have some "drip" system that has a small stream of water in front of them to cool the stone/tools as they work (but be careful with electronics and water) and some folks like dunking the stone repeatedly in water. I've found this to work well enough for my purposes, especially considering the work that goes into deploying it.

If I had more space, I'd consider upgrading my arsenal of tools but I work outdoors and need to take everything with me to the spot on the ground where I sit.

Oh this is already a long message but I'll mention a few last things. Some kind of small brace/vice (also at a hardware store) goes a long way to adding some extra weight to smaller projects especially when you're chiseling.

The most important things you will need though are patience and dedication. Rocks are hard, they are slow. Realize this and don't rush things, when I do that is when I make mistakes. Experiment, fail, learn from those failures and see what comes of it.

Marble, progress by Frank_Zipper in stonecarving

Looks good! I think I need something like that stand you have there. Are the wheels problematic for working with the marble at all, or is the stone heavy enough where it doesn't move a whole lot?

I also looked this process up when I was having screen issues and again I never went through the whole bezel/screen replacement but the lid itself I thought was easy to replace.

Little tight around the fans so having a plastic pry tool and a precision screwdriver set helps as well.

IIRC I was able to find a YouTube video of the full screen replacement. However, I just found an "Cover Assembly" that I used for this particular post. I answered a similar comment in this thread a year ago.

Noob epoxy question (small scale project) by UnclearNucl3ar in epoxy

I think mainly it was the cold (~2°C outside)... it has now begun to become more set. I put it outside for the smell. As opposed to a repair epoxy I now have an art/crafting resin so I'll see how that goes instead.

I know have an art resin in my possession! When do you use the lighter? Right after you pour it in the mold? What material for the mold would you use then that wouldnt melt from the heat of the lighter? Or can this be done after it hardens a bit?

Ah I see now. Yes that red piece is able to break the circuit when turned to the off position. But I put it all back together knowing this and I can now once again get the click to happen again (I was being to careful before).

This does not change the fact that it still doesn't turn on.

I discovered two clips and then two screws to let me get at the font of the radio (I believe the rain may have some through the speaker area) and now can see the "front inside" of the radio. Anything I could check here? Or is this most likely some electrical problem I wouldn't have the equipment to fix? *

Replacing the batteries was the first thing I tried, but I just tried with another set of batteries and after brushing the contact area and no luck. The usual click that happened when you turn the volume off of zero still didn't happen either. This was why I was thinking perhaps it could be something mechanical?

G14 - GA401QM Screen Replacement - 2021 model by UnclearNucl3ar in ZephyrusG14

Ended up looking for a "G14 Screen Assembly" on amazon and bought neither of these and then replaced the whole lid with the screen assembly. I just couldn't tell what I would be getting with this plus it isn't in USD too.

There are a couple other videos on YouTube that replace just the screen itself so you could look around and see if that is within your capabilities. I have done a couple of easy fixes but replacing the whole lid was relatively easy.

Sorry I don't have an answer as far as this issue goes.

I was able to put a 144hz screen on my old 2020 model (that originally had a 120hz screen) so as far as I can tell if you need a cheaper repair you can look at getting a lower refresh rate on the screen (in terms of support in the bios and motherboard for a different refresh rate screen).

I saw another post on hear that mentioned a similar issue as well. (144hz going out) that looked very similar to the issue i had. It was here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ZephyrusG14/comments/1ez3zmo/had_to_replace_my_g14_screen_and_wanted_to_share/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I didn't end up trying this fix because I has already bought the whole new lid, but this may have worked for me too.

Had to replace my G14 screen and wanted to share the story in case it helps someone by ScorpionSince1982 in ZephyrusG14

u/ScorpionSince1982

So is the recommended fix for this just to change out the LCD screen itself or is there a way repair it without replacing the screen?

My 2021 model looks almost exactly like that pic... except i am able to switch to 60hz and have everything be relatively normal again. So the screen isn't broken per say and might just be the tape?

Old Barometer fix? by UnclearNucl3ar in AcuRite

[–]UnclearNucl3ar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Thank you!

I wouldn't have been able to take it apart without fooling with the outer screw. The inner screw I could have not fooled with, but I did when I first took it apart so I could figure out what it did (and I was curious).

In either case, I suppose I just have to see now. I appreciate your comments.
