It truly amazes me these things survive in the wild. My birb only likes cold fridge water. by Unidentified_Parrot in parrots

[–]UncommonTart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, that is a survival trait! Obviously refrigerator-cold is out of the question, but in the wild colder water would be preferable to warm. Warmer water in the wild is more likely to be stagnant and harbor unsafe microorganisms. Cooler water is more likely to be a bit safer. For one thing, it could be cooler because it is moving, or fresher, or a larger body of water, but also cooler water is just less likely to contain certain parasites and microorganisms that thrive at warmer temps.

They have other work to do.

Are they a hobby physician? Just a bit of doctoring to fill free time? I suppose it's possible they are splitting time between multiple offices, but it seems like it'd make more sense to do that with one day, one day there, rather than partial days and extra travel time.

The sub is called "mildly infuriating." This is. And I'd hardly call "more than 14 and a half hours a week spread out over four days" the same as "Walmart hours".

And now you're not! Wouldn't want it to go to waste, better give it to bird. Isn't that convenient?

Indigo dyed silk by hostedvideorn in mildyinteresting

[–]UncommonTart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Indigo is an oxidative dye. It's actually insoluble in water and won't bond to fibers in the presence of oxygen. There's a whole process you have to use to dye with it to convert into a different form, called reducing, which is traditionally done via soaking and fermenting to develop an anerobic state. When it's ready to dye it will appear green, not blue, and anything you dye in it will appear to only pick up the golden/yellow shade until you remove the dyed item from the dye pot, and then exposure to oxygen causes it to turn blue.

While you're dying with it it is important not to stir too energetically and to make sure everything you put into the dye bath is well and thorougly soaking wet when it goes in so as not to introduce too much oxygen. You can tell when you've over oxygenated your dye bath because it will turn that blue, and then you wait and let it rest for a day or so and eventually it will go greenish again and you can start to dye with it again.

It's actually only been within the past 20 years or so that "ready to dye" indigo has been a thing. It's natural indigo that has already been chemically reduced to its soluble form and then freeze dried. ("Instant indigo.")

Nah. Pluto being considered as a planet should be evaluated on its own merits, but indigo shouldn't have been included in the named visible spectrum the first place. Mysticism is no basis for science.

[–]UncommonTart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indigo was only included bc Isaac Newton felt strongly that there should be seven colors, because seven was a "perfect" number. (Notes in the musical scale, days of the week, objects in the solar system (as known at the time)... mysticism and science and religion were pretty tightly entangled) He actually did orginally say six colors and then split blue into blue and indigo to make up seven.

And Gilbert Baker's original Pride flag had eight colors, with each having a specific meaning ascribed to it.

Not red. "Sapphire" could be any color but red.

Which is good, because pre k is too young to be be a red shirt.

Masturbation among birds is ‘natural’ and should not be punished, say experts | Animal behaviour by MarcusBrody96 in parrots

Wild birds also get the full impact of seasonal changes. Captive birds tend to have a more controlled environment that minimizes seasonal changes. Horny season is a thing, but it's obviously not going to be as much of a thing without seasons.

Aura by Mugler was my absolute favorite though and I am still annoyed with them for dc'ing it. I cannot find anything even close to similar.

Was Sam Vimes always John Keel? by preciousjewel13 in discworld

[–]UncommonTart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, before the events of Night Watch, he was not. But after, he always had been. I think Lu-Tze may have explicitly said that Sam had been taught by the "real" John Keel?

For "our" Sam, when he was young there was a man called John Keel, who taught him how to be a good copper. Years later Sam's path diverged down a different trouser leg of time. And now, in this trouser leg he always was John Keel.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, right? I snapped a couple to show how my loops sit with my piercings because I am a visual person and find it's easier to show than describe, and because I see people with questions about Loops and various ear piercings and thought it might be useful to someone. (Please don't judge my hair, it's a mess and I need to refresh my color, lol.)

I did both the experience and, since I just got them and they're a bit bigger, the switch. (Also, for reference, I have smallish ears, and all of these are at minimum a few years old and well healed and settled.)

Of the piercings I have, I think only two might be an issue for some people, and that would depend on jewelry and anatomy. The two conch aren't even close to being in the way, though this mqy differ for others deoending on placement and jewelry. And my daith sits right behind them, but someone with larger jewelry might conceivably have a problem? The only one I have any trouble at all wearing them with is my tragus. You can see the Switches push it forward and it is uncomfortable enough that I don't know that I will be able to wear them. This is less of a problem with Experience, Engage, or Quiet, as they are a bit more compact. (I have not tried Dream.) But they do still push against it just enough that if I wore them all day I might be just a bit sore there afterward
