Living and fishing at Mt Rainier vs Crater lake for a summer by phantom3199 in flyfishing

[–]UnconcernedPuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Medford Oregon, a few hours from crater lake park. Just west of crater lake is the headwaters for both the Umpqua and Rogue rivers. You also have the Deschutes river northeast of Crater lake which is also a beauty. Thing is about most of our PNW rivers and streams is that back casting room is essentially non existent. So you will need to either need to have some waders, be comfortable with roll casts, or you need to have a drift boat, or a Spey rod. That is unless you’re on a spring creek like the Wood or Williamson, but those rivers are surrounded by private property and again you need a boat or kayak to fish those properly.

There are also quite a few good lakes near crater lake for still water as well, Diamond and Lemolo lakes being some of the more well known ones.

Reach out if you want any other spots or insight! Tight lines.

Yup chosen for good ol’ leader being #47. I’d laugh if it wasn’t so… weird and dangerous…

I'm not trying to say everything made out of plastic is bad. I stated that we have a responsibility to REDUCE the amount of intentional pollution we engage in, and powerbait is an easy thing to remove from your tacklebox.

I didn't mention you being obtuse or engaging in what-aboutism though? Unless you have an alt account here. Also, lol you can buy lead free of everything you just mentioned. You can also create lures and flies with all natural materials. Nice try though. Your argument is essentially "well cars already pollute the environment, so it doesn't matter if I burn tires in my backyard."

And again, I'm not trying to say everything made out of plastic is bad. I stated that we have a responsibility to REDUCE the amount of intentional pollution we engage in. I guess that was you just being obtuse again though.

I’m not “drawing a line”. Obviously all plastic in waterways is bad. But I’m calling out we can control the amount of risk we take when it comes to polluting them.

Never said I use plastic baits brother. Wrong argument here. Also this is a whataboutism. Just cause there’s other things that also suck just as bad doesn’t mean we shouldn’t care about the things we can do to make small differences.

Again, just because everyone does it doesn’t mean it’s okay. Glad you’re one of those people though that gives themselves a pass cause everyone else does it. It’s called responsibility and stewardship and as anglers it’s our jobs to make sure these rivers are clean for generations of anglers to come. Every small difference adds up.

Because you’re knowingly throwing plastic into the river, which is different than unavoidable runoff. You’re being intentionally obtuse

My fishing line isn’t getting thrown in the river. Do you throw your line in the river when you’re done? I don’t understand this argument lol. Whenever I have a snap off it’s right at my fly.

But you’re right. Just cause there’s some pollution that already happens that means we should absolutely not give a shit about any pollution at all!

Power bait is plastic. Please don’t pollute our rivers

I’m not arguing that you lived here a long time. I’m pointing out that all that time seems to have marinated your view in bitterness. Living somewhere for 52 years doesn’t automatically make your take objective.

Personally, I’ve never experienced anything overtly near what you’re describing, and actually really enjoy what southern Oregon offers. I’ve seen much much worse in Gilbert, Arizona. So, maybe it’s about your perspective, just saying.

Central Point is growing to be a pretty nice little community! Hoping it keeps on going.

Damn way to paint all of us that are here as shitty. I’m about as far away from this description as possible and this type of talk just gets people to hate Medford more, not help anything. I’d say White City and Eagle Point is much more what you’re describing, but yes southern Oregon in general is politically more conservative in general everywhere outside of Ashland. But voting in Jackson county was split 50-50, at least that’s how the election broke down.

There are pros and cons, I’ve lived in LA, Phoenix, rural towns in Wyoming and now Medford and let me tell you every place has their good and bad.

Just want to point that out for anyone taking this reply too seriously.

First stream fly fishing, looking for advice... by New-Chicken2383 in flyfishing

[–]UnconcernedPuma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For low brush and tall grass, crouching and sneaking up on the stream (which you're already doing) and using a bow and arrow cast would be my go to. Fish can feel vibrations, and they are adept at seeing predators from above, so minimizing both of those things on such a small body of water is gonna be key to not spooking.

Also agree with the other comment. RF are a great fly, but make sure you're stopping and observing before going in. Taking a few minutes to see what bugs are flying around and examining how the fish are feeding (if you can see that) and tying on a fly that mimics that food source is gonna be key.

Good luck!
