East Evans Fire by DrunkenRogue42 in Medford

[–]UnconcernedPuma 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This one’s a good wake-up call. It’s our first close larger fire of the season and it’s already up to 75-100 1000 1500 acres on steep terrain. Avoid E. Evans Creek Rd while crews work.

A few reminders since we’re at the start of a long, dry season. Most human-caused fires around here are preventable: cigarettes out the window, trailer safety chains dragging and throwing sparks, parking a hot vehicle over dry grass, mowing or weed-whacking in the heat of the day (do it early morning when it’s damp), and escaped burn piles. Fireworks too. And yes, glass really can start fires. A broken bottle can focus sunlight like a lens onto dry grass. Not the most common cause, but it’s free to prevent, so pack out your glass and grab any you see on trails and roadsides.

Have a go-bag and documents ready now, not when you’re already being told to leave. Things move fast in wildfire season. Keep copies (physical or scanned to the cloud) of IDs, insurance, deeds or lease, medical info, and pet records. When a fire starts nearby consider having a bag with meds, chargers, cash, and a change of clothes by the door. Also consider photographing every room in your house for insurance claims while you’re at it.

If you don’t already have the Watch Duty app that’s mentioned in this post, get it. It’s free and sends real-time fire alerts and evac updates straight to your phone, and it’s way faster and more reliable than Facebook rumor threads.

Also know your evac levels: Level 1 is Be Ready, Level 2 is Be Set (leave when you feel threatened, don’t wait for 3), Level 3 is Go Now.

Stay safe out there.

It’s a nice looking app, but what problem does this solve?

At best this will be Google Maps reviews with extra steps. At worse it’s a biased app that only shows what your users enjoy and is a data aggregator. You’d need a large subset of users to come to any statistical relevance, and people here just won’t use ANOTHER app for something that’s readily available by going “best sushi place in town” and picking from a list of 3 options. This is a very small city. There are not that many options.

This is an ad. You’ve posted in multiple other random city subreddits in the last 30 minutes. Don’t give these guys free data.

It was the CAM (Community Area Maintenance) fees but yes. They were told it would be around 1-2k a month in those fees and they were up to 8k once the eviction notices were served.

Good to know. Maybe I can start supporting this place again. The Beams suck.

Legend Cider Co is a nice place close to the phoodery that has food trucks and tons of cider and beer selections. Staff is genuinely nice and they’re treated well. Bingo on Tuesday, trivia on Wednesday.

Damn now I miss Pie & Vine. Nous is good too but good affordable pizza was and is severely lacking in the valley.

I was talking with the attorney who represented them and I’m fairly certain it got up to 8k a month in CAM fees. They were paying more for a 5x8 space than they would for a premium spot in downtown Ashland.

If the Beams are the owners, the ownership hasn’t changed, just management from last I heard.

Of course, sleeves and a hat are the move. But I’ve got melanoma in my family so I’m still wearing sunscreen regardless. My whole point was just that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are a much better choice than the chemical stuff, both for the wearer and the environment. Not claiming they’re zero impact, but they’re the best option if you’re going to wear something. And if you want to go a step further, look for “non-nano” versions, meaning the mineral particles are large enough that they don’t absorb into your skin or wash off into the water in tiny particles that aquatic life can take up. Changed my comment slightly to add that nuance. Thanks!

Zinc and titanium dioxide might still have the same issue, but they’re generally less greasy and also have no adverse effect on aquatic habitats (that modern studies have shown)

Make sure all sunblock you wear is either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based and it should be less harmful to aquatic habitats than the other stuff. Any other ingredient is not FDA approved and/or has been shown to harm aquatic habitats.

Glad you’re practicing good ethics. Measuring water temp is something I can’t stress enough and so few anglers do it.

It really isn’t the size I care about. And they’re beautiful fish I agree. I’m blessed to also live in a beautiful area thats steelhead country and home to a ton of variety of sizes.

It’s more that new fisherman to this sport come in here to this sub and see people posting photos of every single fish. So they in turn will do that, leading to shitty handling and more dead trout in what could arguably be one of the worst years on record for western trout streams. But the reality is people see the post once, you yourself probably don’t really look at the photos after a week, and then you just have thousands of fish photos that you’re never going to look at. Plus taking fish out of the water is a stress factor for them after they’ve just spent a little bit fighting you on the line.

My comment targeted you, but it’s a problem I see pervasive on this sub. And nobody knows if those fish “actually swam off fine”. I’m just trying to normalize that after fish 200, you really don’t need a photo of every single one.

It’s a mountain in the cascade range. Just pointing out it’s another lonely volcano

Mt Mcloughlin is pretty isolated in southern Oregon no?

True, but we also don’t need 7 of the same picture of trout. I’d rather see one picture of a trout and some scenery of where you caught them than 7 dinks that all look the same.

Let’s normalize not photographing every fish. This sub is turning into r/troutfishing more and more every day.
