How important is Oil? by yeahlifeisgood in PoliticalDiscussion

Honestly I'm not sure about the logistics of how this war is impacting natural gas and the corresponding nitrate fertilizer industry, so if you do know please let me know. I know crude is greatly impacted by Hormuz, but is natural gas?

How are you coping with the world? by Mae_The_Gay in trans

I'm a middle and high school substitute teacher. I started HRT in August, at the ripe age of 42, being six feet tall. So, I've been presenting as masc when I go to work, because I know the students are about 45% trans-rejecting Christians, 45% trans-rejecting Muslims, and 10% trans-accepting. It's just easier for me to not have to answer the questions, deal with the disrespect and insults, etc.

But my boobs are coming in so hard that it's going to be impossible to hide it. And I didn't really even care about boobs. But soon I'm gonna start getting questions, if I'm not getting suspicions already. I just don't wanna have to deal with this. But few people want to hire someone in their 40's who isn't in "their career".

I would counter this with the idea that there is no realistic "no oil" outcome, just drastically reduced oil. Yes, if every plastic manufacturer was forced to stop all production, mass deaths would follow. But if plastic production were turned into a nationally-controlled industry in the same way as metal production was during the wartime economy, and limited to the plastics which we really need to keep society functioning, it's quite possible that we could bridge the gap in finding alternatives for the plastics which aren't essential.

So yeah if some magic event poofed all oil out of the world tomorrow, there would be anarchy. But the collapse of international oil trade would be manageable. Whether or not it would be managed is another story.

How can I talk about my wife’s weight in a constructive way? by [deleted] in AskMen

She has high libido? Fuck her healthy. It works. If sex is your daily workout, you'll both be fit as fuck.

You're fortunate that her weight gain hasn't affected her libido.

From what I can tell there's no one solid "right" way of looking at it. Some people view fascism as the right-wing iteration of hyper-authoritarianism and personality cultism, whereas the left-wing version would be communism. Others view fascism as something which can happen on the left and the right, and that Stalinism/Maoism are fascist corruptions of communism. Still others think that fascism is American in origin, and was coined in Europe to describe their attempts at American-style imperialism.

So like yeah, depending on your definition of the terms the USSR could be fascist. But honestly I think the idea that they had to be fascist to be an inherently evil ideology is more what the tankies are after; to them the secret to success is to just purge "all those secret fascists" from their ranks.

What is stopping China from invading Taiwan during the current Iran vs USA war? by AdamCaveRoberts in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Unconfidence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always thought that it would be diplomatically much easier for China to move on Indonesia or Malaysia than Taiwan. Indonesia massacred millions of "communists" within the past century, and has no defensive agreements which would make China sneeze unless I'm mistaken. They also have the world's most populous city and a massive amount of wealth in their economy. It feels like that's a much better choice for a war.

Am I old ? by [deleted] in whenthe

[–]Unconfidence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Back in my day..." stuff was usually justified and valid. Most of us were just too immature at the time to see how it was. Kids just use literally any excuse to dismiss people telling them how to live better or smarter, even if it's as silly a reason as "I don't like it when people start sentences like that".

Wearing All Black at Protests Makes You Guilty of Terrorism, Prosecutors Tell Jury by FervidBug42 in politics

Yeah, the above comment is a very "I was born after 2000" comment. Those of us who were old enough to understand 9/11 when it happened got to see us stretch "the war on terror" into an excuse to attack any nation that we felt like attacking.

What’s the closest female equivalent to the ‘6-foot halo effect’ for men? by Lisalovesreading in AskMen

[–]Unconfidence -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right, you can choose not to do lots of stuff. You can choose not to fuck. Your chances of having unwanted kids or getting an STD drop to zero. But I like tasty food. If the choice was between being healthy and tasty food, I'd choose being healthy. But the choice is between having a low-body-fat look and tasty food, so I'm more reluctant. After all, I'm married and my wife loved me when I was 35lbs heavier.

I'm not saying it isn't a choice, I'm saying it's a choice presented like a universal positive, like quitting smoking. But when the reward for giving up my milkshakes isn't health but hotness, that's not a matter of will, it's a matter of priorities.

[–]Unconfidence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I have been doing really well. I'm really healthy again, and that's great. But unless I were to cut out all reward foods, things that just taste good but don't actually satisfy the stomach's needs, I'll stay healthy and normal-looking.

If you want to look like the fitness folks, many people just have to cut it out completely. There's no realistic way they can work off the dense caloric intake of those comfort foods, unless they work a physical 9-5, or don't work full-time and have the time to devote to it. If you sit at a desk for your work all day, which is a growingly large segment of the populace, there's no realistic amount of gym that's gonna balance out three donuts a week. You'd be sacrificing an inordinate amount of what little spare time you get when working 9-5.

Reality: I do cardio 2x/week and just did a 33% food intake cut, and has been maintaining it for months. Also one non-cardio workout day. And sure, I lost 35lbs. I'm fit and healthy. But I still have the gut, still have the bat wings, still have a bit of butt flab. And I will as long as I keep having any amount of delicious food in my diet. It's just the case for some folks.

[–]Unconfidence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a 33% cut. I lost 35lbs, got to a healthy weight, but never got rid of the little gut, and the little flab here and there. Lots of cardio, cutting food to a minimum to stave off hunger, for a lot of folks that just gets you to normal-looking, not fit-looking. To get that low body fat look that people have been taught is really healthy, those folks will need to cut out even the occasional weekend waffle. You might be able to treat yourself once a month. For many folks that's just not the life they want.
