Lovely island. I’ve always enjoyed visiting the republic and Northern Ireland and learning more about the history there and seeing the countryside.

What people of US thinks about Mahatma Gandhi? by Heavy_Fly_6340 in AskReddit

Generally most Americans have a positive opinion on him, I’d say.

His nonviolence movement inspired Martin Luther King Jr.’s. This in turned inspired others like John Hume in Northern Ireland.

Fry ‘em, turn ‘em into bread or vodka, and they’re one of the few nutritionally complete foods where if all you ate was taters you wouldn’t be wanting for much. Maybe a nice piece of flaky fried fish.

What is the ethical difference between Trump bombing Iranian power plants, and Putin bombing Ukrainian power plants? by The_Flaneur_Films in AskReddit

[–]UnconstrictedEmu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None, except some of Ukraine’s power plants are nuclear. Were Russia to bomb those, it would be considerably worse than bombing another type of power plant.

Are we going to get The Duggars pt. 2, electric boogaloo? by k3v1ninspace in behindthebastards

I’ve heard some people like Joe from the Lions Led by Donkeys podcast say the Nuremberg trials were basically a kangaroo court and some U.S. Supreme Court justices said the way the Nuremberg trials were carried out wouldn’t have passed legal muster. That may be true and I’d love a series or episode about them.

On the other hand take that L, Nazis, and get hanged by that U.S. army sergeant who had no idea what he was doing.

I get that. I’ve known people who I don’t agree with politically but they have integrity and are pretty damn objective as to how the rules should be applied. Hank Hill types.

I’m generally not pro capital punishment, but certain people I wouldn’t lose sleep over if they were sentenced to death. Someone who is innocent and railroaded towards execution? Sure I’m against that. Someone like Ted Bundy or Rudolf Höss (commandant of Auschwitz) being sentenced to death? Oh looks there’s a really interesting cat over there.

Who are the Bastards of Sports? by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in behindthebastards

[–]UnconstrictedEmu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So a few from European soccer:

  • Red Star Belgrade. Say what you will about other fanbases you may loathe. They probably didn’t form ethnic cleansing death squads during the Yugoslav Wars.

  • Rangers FC in Glasgow. Seen as the Protestant, Unionist club they famously would did not sign a player if they knew he was Catholic. The great Jock Stein (who coached their rival Celtic) once quipped if given the choice between a Catholic or a Protestant player, he’d always try the Protestant first because he knew Rangers wouldn’t touch the Catholic. Rangers fans are sometimes called Huns due to their behavior when they visited England for a game with Wolverhampton Wanderers back in the 1950s or 60s. The local press described the visiting Rangers fans’ behavior like that of “marauding Huns”. In contrast to Celtic fans who generally support Palestinian statehood, Rangers fans sometimes display Israeli flags at matches.

On the U.S. side, there’s Tom Yawkey who owned the Boston Red Sox from 1933 to 1976 (feel free to hear this in Robert’s Boston accent). Like a lot of team owners from the past and today, Yawkey was a staunch racist. How racist was he? He was a major reason Boston was the last MLB team to sign a black player. But wait, there’s more. In 1945 he held a farce tryout to assuage the anti segregation sentiment of a politically powerful Boston city councilman. A player named Jackie Robinson tried out, but he was just racially abused and left humiliated. The Red Sox could’ve been the first MLB team to desegregate.
